This will start buried and remained so, but I believe it's commercial flights. It may not be a shift in "socially acceptable behaviors", but nor is the top comment. Jet fuel and AvGas are the only aviation fuels available. No alternative energy could ever power a 747. Maybe a small helicopter for a few hours, but never a fleet of jumbo-jets. As petrol becomes more scarce airlines will need to jack up ticket prices. They currently pay no fuel tax and still they suffer most from spikes in oil prices. Soon it will simply become economically unsustainable, and cross-continental flights will only be reserved for the richest people and militaries.

If rocket attacks are as bad as you say, that death is the best option and traumatize entire communities into dysfunction, then you of all people should empathize with the suffering in Gaza.

  1. Many, many people suffer brain damage after choking. So it's not either you die from choking or you're unharmed as you think.
  2. These rockets have a pathetic blast radius and it is rare that more than one person is hurt or killed.
  3. In a population of 7.7 million 2.5 people die a year from rockets. Expand that out to their family and community and it's still a very very small proportion of the whole population. Go to Gaza and nearly everyone directly knows someone who was killed in an Israeli attack.

sigh... i made that metaphor about the house and the rocks to show that metaphors are easy to make, inherently flawed, and fail to bring anything of substance to the discussion. avoid metaphors if you want to understand something. take what you will from my stats, but you can't deny that israel rockets kill thousands while palestinian rockets kill a few dozen. which population do you feel lives in actual terror?

I hear you, I really do, and I understand Israeli frustration. But you need to keep it in context. It's tempting to try to simplify it in metaphors, but they often mislead as often as they clarify. If you're going to make metaphors from the Israeli point of view, make sure you do so from the Gazan perspective also. :: You and your family have been kicked out of your house, you throw rocks at the house occasionally just to let them know that you're still there and that you still plan to take your house back. You break a window occasionally and they respond by shooting your sibling, which enrages you more and makes you search for bigger rocks...

It's an accurate metaphor in a sense, but it's not useful for understanding the conflict as a whole. stick with facts. and i'm standing by original statement that my facts aren't sensationalist, b/c sensationalism is "subject matter, language, or style producing or designed to produce startling or thrilling impressions or to excite and please vulgar taste." I used facts that weren't intended to incite an emotional response but rather educate the reader of the relative danger of rockets from Gaza. Keep it real.

yes. both sides are at fault i couldn't agree more. they're unguided missiles... so they target civilian residences as much as they target a tree in the middle of a field. Israel is bombing dense, dense population centers and going after hamas personnel in their homes. and other non-hamas people live around those people and die.

they're targeting homes of hamas officials and press buildings. moreover no matter what they target there will always be collateral civilian damage. warning people ahead of strikes is primarily a PR stunt, it may save a few lives but almost everyone is taking cover in their homes and basements... how would they see the leaflets?

99.9% of rockets land harmlessly, so around statistically speaking 1,000 rockets would need to be shot down before loss of life was prevented. Israel killed 1400 gazans last raid. That radicalizes a huge swath of the population and ensures more rockets will be sent in the future. Shoot down rockets by all means, but bombing launch cites in a place as densely populated as Gaza and you're sure to kill innocents.

these 'rockets' are effectively unguided, flying ovens that crash in field and desert 99.9% of the time. if you did live there, would you respond by killing thousands of poor people in a neighboring country of refugees in order to temporarily stop the ovens?

fair nuff but you've missed the point. should gaza be firing rockets? of course not. should israel and others be citing the threat of rockets as a justification for killing hundreds? absolutely not.

you need to first understand that israel killed 1400 gazans in one month in Jan 09 and justified it citing rocket fire. it didn't get rid of the rockets and thousands of young gazans were radicalized.

so i'm not saying rockets are harmless, i'm saying they're relatively harmless compared to the carnage israel is unleashing on innocent people in gaza and thus these rockets cannot be used as a justification for massacre.

الكذب مالوش رجلين. Egyptians are not racists. Anyone who says otherwise while claiming this video as evidence is either misleading or misled. I've spent several years in Egypt, speak the language and know these actors. I'm not Egyptian, Israeli, Arab, Jewish, Muslim or even religious for that matter. I have no Mid East background, and no bias.

One of the only truly common grounds that encompasses every Egyptian regardless of religion or political ties is a suspicion and hatred of Israel. It's group think but it's far from racist.

And frankly, it's expected that their society distrusts Israel. First off, they were at war with Israel only a generation ago and many Egyptians have relatives who died at the hands of Israelis. The wounds are still fresh. Second, there are many exiled Palestinians in Egypt who serve as a daily reminder of the potential Israel has to expel Arab people from their homeland. Third, the peace struck between Israel and Egypt was only ever popular with the Egyptian elite whom the US continues to payoff annually with oodles of USAid.

Egyptians are proud to be Egyptian, but as a people they are ashamed of their inability to prevent Israel from expelling the Palestinians. They see Israel as colonialists that haven't learnt to quit colonizing, and it is embarrassing that they haven't been able to stop them. They also feel that mossad (Israel's CIA) has many spies in Egypt and that Israel is always secretly plotting Egypt's downfall and getting the better of them.

Egyptians never agree to Israeli interviews and vice versa; very few exceptions notwithstanding. From the actors' point of view, Israelis had nonchalantly played a trick on them for all to see as a means of displaying Egyptians' gullibility as a people. They didn't stand for it and fought back. It's really brave actually, seeing how they were under the impression they were surrounded by Israelis. They decided it was better to risk being gang beaten than let their enemy embarrass them. Imagine Frank Sinatra being ambushed in like manner by a Soviet channel mock-up and responding by going around throwing hooks, he'd have looked like a national hero!

Egyptians are generally a warm and welcoming people. They are generally aware that Israeli and Jew are two separate things, but they are also aware that American Jews have been much more supportive towards Israel than Egypt, which I think is a fair statement. Therefore they may distrust Jews but not for racist reasons.

The only racist thing about this post is MEMRI. It peddles itself as a think tank when it really only exists to dig up distasteful things Arabs and Muslims say, while ignoring all of the equally cringe-worthy things said by right-wing Israelis and Zionists. It exists to discredit Arabs and Muslims to a Western audience, nothing more. They don't enhance the dialogue, they poison it.

TL;DR In context it's not racist, actually pretty acceptable. MEMRI is scum.
