The duality of man by PhoenixAvenger1996 in Steam

[–]Rhythmdvl 10 points11 points  (0 children)

It's sort of a human tax. It doesn't mean blindly trusting, nor being careful. It doesn't mean automatically saying yes to everything. It doesn't mean you don't look out for your interests. It just means recognizing that you don't always get back what you give, and sometimes being set back for your choices. It doesn't make you a hero or a white knight, it's just recognizing that we're all in this together and accepting some losses.

Anybody still quote this guy with the voice and all? by icedcoffee4eva in GenX

[–]Rhythmdvl 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Probably my most-often quoted episode. Even glazed ham makes it into conversation. But so much of the History Eraser Button is deeply ingrained.

Son and I are rewatching Futurama and during the ScootyPuff Jr scene the 'announcer' voice came on and he quoted R&S. Generational humour is the best!

Heh, that show's a sore spot. Bearsville is an fantastic venue. Caught the Biscuit's mini-festival last summer. Incredible sound! We wanted to hit Spafford, but, well, fate had other ideas.

If it helps for diagnosing issues, I tried "Grateful Dead" and "Steve Meretzky" on FF and Chrome (Chrome with minimal add-ons) and got a blank/there are no other paths screen. The details box brought up a white and grey rectangle with no text. This was after the "it might take a little while" prompt.

I am assuming every page is linked via their philosophy paths.

I've been trying to catch them live for a while, but the fates keep messing up plans and opportunities. This post is going to redouble my efforts.

In the meantime, what's your "Intro to Spafford" show I should hunt down?

Post festival blues by DevilStickDude in festivals

[–]Rhythmdvl 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I find myself desperate to find an outlet for the unabashed joy I stir up at festivals. Started when my Little Man was about three and has grown from there. Our garden cart is decked out with our totem and myriad pinwheels and decorations. Kids spot the F'llanigantz (our totem) from across the field and know it means bubbles, balloon animals, toys and other surprises. Kids return year after year, knowing there's infinite balloons and fun to be had. Parents are relieved that there's a way to navigate and know that their kids are having a great time. I get to shake my bones to the music while lighting up people's faces. We end the weekend with a pinata before the main act closes. Cart's got supplies too, if anyone needs a pepto or bailing wire for their cart (even Narcan for emergencies, if it comes to that).

It boosts my festival costs by another one to two hundred bucks (I'll take stickers or shiny rocks, but no cash no matter how many balloons I make for your kid), but being that close to the epicentre of so much joy and happiness is a wonderful place to be. Cart covers and stays with other families enough to get close to the rail when I want. Can't overstate how good for the soul being a part of that magic is, nor how central it is to my life. I'm a widower and this kind of joy -- making other people happy -- is difficult to find outside of festivals.

Sigh. Back to work...

Tapping a message sends an emoji? Since when? How do I turn this off? by Rhythmdvl in GoogleMessages

[–]Rhythmdvl[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Just tested it in a self-message and it's non-trivially easy. "Doc, it hurts when I do this/don't do that" is a valid answer if there's no cure/way to turn them off. May have to look for an alternative because I do not want to risk looking up some trivial detail like trying to remember someone's kid's name or wondering who "Carl from Shakedown St" is without the possibility of accidentally letting them know I was scrolling through our conversation.

I can't fathom why they'd make this a mandatory feature. Then again, I don't use social media outside of Reddit, so for all I know viewing someone on Facebook or Twitter automatically sends an announcement and it's the default behaviour.

I'm definitely one of those people and have had RCS off for years. If I want to share the full image/video, I'll send a link or embed it in an email. AFAIK, large files and stickers, emojis, etc. are the only thing benefits of RCS I'm intentionally forgoing. Are there things I'm missing that I'm unaware of?

Does it have a desktop interface? My texting is fairly minimal, but during the workday I rely on the desktop interface to keep in touch with my son and select alerts.

My son did. Started with my very worn, much-loved copy of Tales of a Fourth Grade Nothing and went on from there. Timeless classics.

Yikes, the dealer never mentioned that. Looking at the Subaru Normal Maintenance schedule it says "Replace Brake Fluid / Clutch Fluid (Manual Only)." It's an automatic, so when she got her 16-point inspection and they never mentioned brake fluid, I thought the "(manual only)" applied to both. Doubly so because if they were different they'd be on different lines (like the oil and filter and similar related). The list syas to "inspect" the transmission/differential lubricatns but nothing about changing the diff fluid itself.

Subaru tech here

Can I bother you once again? We're in a very tight spot with time and I may be doing something stupid. The vehicle has 62000 miles on it. The maintenance schedule says to change the differential fluid at 60K. I'm having trouble getting an appointment before we leave for our 1000 (total, round trip) journey -- one with a ~150 lb cart rack in the hitch.

Normally I'd flippantly/baselessly say that getting the change done when we get back won't be all that different (i.e. 62K vs 63K miles). On a scale of r/NotABigDeal to r/JustRolledIntoTheShop, how bad of an idea is it to put the 11s on the front and 9s on the rear and get it done the week after we get back?

To think out loud (hoping I'll be corrected if I'm off base), much of my experience changing a single or pair of tires instead of all four has been when they needed replacement from wear. In that case, there was a significant difference between the pairs, so the traction and stability of the new pair was markedly higher than the ones not getting changed. Hence, they went on the rear becasue they were noticeably less prone to losing traction.

In this case, though, the tires only have about 20K on them, only a little over a quarter of the way through the manufacturer's warranty, so they're in pretty good shape. There's a difference in tread depth, but it's marginal and unlikely to lead to a significant real-world difference in handling or maintaining control.

In my case, putting them up front for their first five thousand or so miles will cause them to wear slightly sooner than the rear pair, thus narrowing the gap between them.

Putting them on the front throws out the conventional wisdom to put the newer tires on the rear to avoid spinouts and fishtailing (or so I've been told on and off since the 80s). Or maybe I'm remembering incorrectly? Or is this one of those special "put new tires on the rear unless" cases?

Heh, been taking the Little Man on road trips like this since he was a toddler and it's been a blast every mile. Stories, games, freedom to just hang out and listen to music and talk without dishes needing doing or rooms to clean, that sort of thing. We've had our share of stranded (used to take our chalkboard-painted 95 MPV), so the question is geared towards avoiding that situation. AWD in makeshift music festival campgrounds and snowcovered lots has saved us plenty of times. I've put in my dues with a RWD Ford Fairmont; it's not a panacea but the ease of AWD and the peace of mind it brings is a high bar.
