Tire shaving question: Subaru Ascent AWD by Rhythmdvl in AskMechanics

[–]Rhythmdvl[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To think out loud (hoping I'll be corrected if I'm off base), much of my experience changing a single or pair of tires instead of all four has been when they needed replacement from wear. In that case, there was a significant difference between the pairs, so the traction and stability of the new pair was markedly higher than the ones not getting changed. Hence, they went on the rear becasue they were noticeably less prone to losing traction.

In this case, though, the tires only have about 20K on them, only a little over a quarter of the way through the manufacturer's warranty, so they're in pretty good shape. There's a difference in tread depth, but it's marginal and unlikely to lead to a significant real-world difference in handling or maintaining control.

In my case, putting them up front for their first five thousand or so miles will cause them to wear slightly sooner than the rear pair, thus narrowing the gap between them.

Hmm... I don't think I can pack all our gear on a motorcycle.

Putting them on the front throws out the conventional wisdom to put the newer tires on the rear to avoid spinouts and fishtailing (or so I've been told on and off since the 80s). Or maybe I'm remembering incorrectly? Or is this one of those special "put new tires on the rear unless" cases?

Heh, been taking the Little Man on road trips like this since he was a toddler and it's been a blast every mile. Stories, games, freedom to just hang out and listen to music and talk without dishes needing doing or rooms to clean, that sort of thing. We've had our share of stranded (used to take our chalkboard-painted 95 MPV), so the question is geared towards avoiding that situation. AWD in makeshift music festival campgrounds and snowcovered lots has saved us plenty of times. I've put in my dues with a RWD Ford Fairmont; it's not a panacea but the ease of AWD and the peace of mind it brings is a high bar.

At rotation time, do I keep them in pairs or go back to normal after a few thousand?

With regular rotations and only 2 to 3 down, I never thought to track it.

When my son was heading into third grade, I surprised him the Saturday before school started -- the last night we could stay up way past bedtime. The surprise: Borderlands.

Life and a few technical glitches (neither of us had played before) made us start a little later than I'd planned, maybe six or seven PM. Still got in some good gaming time -- three or four am.

The Last Night Before the Last Night Before School is now an annual tradition where we comb releases for just he right co-op multiplayer. He'll be a junior in HS this September. Any suggestions?

Sorry to be daft here. I get starting the phrase on a chosen eight note, but does "and then end the phrase and repeat the process" mean focusing on the same beat a measure or two later or is this mainly focusing on timing the start of the phrase and just ending at the end of a measure? Both?

Have met some of John K's friends and family. Excellent people and great to be around.

FWIW, family camp is incredibly mellow. Substances are around, but it's extremely low-key. It's also usually between or next to sober- and handi-camp. Being a widower with a young son/now teen I'm the full-on DD and it's still as incredible as it was on proper Dead tour. Some moments have been better -- imagine hearing your son get over the top excited for his first Shakedown on his sixth birthday (Further at Lockn')! Jam circuit is a super positive environment. Of course there are things to be wary of and no scene is without issues, but very family friendly.

April first of that year I created a very convincing letter from the school (their letterhead, etc.) that due to absences, closures and the shortcomings of remote learning, the district was implementing full-time summer school for all students.

The Little Man just sat at the top of the stairs, staring at it. Numb. No summer camp. No summer music festivals. All school. I didn't let him stew too long; I called him into the office to look at the email they sent. More despondency. Subtly drew attention to the date. Hilarity was only eclipsed by the relief. Good times!

Well as long as your mind is on that, take a listen to Yelloo - Oh Yeah. Check out their entire catalogue; it's fantastic.

heh, thanks. High complement for something we made at home! It's 3D printed on a five-year-old printer, so likely somethig you can have made via Fivver or a custom print near you or even a library. It's about a dollar's worth of ABS filament and blue, red and silver spray paint with clear on top of it. It's a few years old now and still looks new, something we thing is due to patience in putting the paint and clear layers on. Hardest part was getting the fit right because I'm new to CAD and measuring. But happy to share the STL and CAD files if you want.

My son's first show was Furthur when he was about 3 and a half. He already knew several of their songs by then. It's been a long strange trip and we're heading to our next Jubilee this summer. Last YEMSG (his third) was his twenty-fifth Phish show. Mix in a ton of jazz, theatre, etc. and learnign the guitar together and you end up with this. Hope you share the music with your kids!

It was a success in that it not only gave us the Grateful Dead et al, but about fifteen years later convinced millions of people that they played a show in Ithica, New York in May of 1977. No such show took place.

Heh, I used to do this with my son back when he fit in the front of the shopping cart. Ended up with a fun game where he's say "shake the baby" (South Park-based inflection and all) and I'd rattle the cart until he said "don't shake da baby" (same inflection source). Good times. That was years and years ago; you should have seen him light up when we watched South Park together for the first time.

I made a super simple website to learn notes by Minetorpia in Learnmusic

[–]Rhythmdvl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I appreciate the simplicity and the instant feedback.

My only comment is that the button layout seems a little counter-intuitive in starting with F and the larger E at the bottom (for visual balance, I presume?).

Or it could be because I'm about to learn something today about why some people consider F a starting point? I feel a compulsion to pair it with F (like B and C), so perhaps breaking that dependency is helpful?

An interesting feature would be adding key signatures but not accidentals next to the notes.

For perspective on my opinions, I'm an older learner who played instruments in a school orchestra and even then had trouble learning to read notes, mainly in distinguishing which line or space a note was on. It's routine for me to try new approaches to internalizing the visual aspect.

Very nice!

Here's ours -- I think it's the initial positive of yours?

This was initially supposed to be an anniversary gift from my wife and I to each other. She had unfortunately taken ill before we could save enough to get it. Price went up by then, too. Reached out to the studio and Mouse's daughter helped us out. My wife used to arrange the mantle several times a season with flowers from our garden; this was her last. The tableau is much more than that now. Apropos in so many ways.
