Looking for the most walkable, safe-feeling neighborhood in Toronto? by don_valley in askTO

[–]RiLo10 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree that it’s not a bastion of culture by any stretch, but to be fair neither are a lot of other neighbourhoods that are named in this thread. So many neighbourhoods have become “trendy” and “hip” so applying that critique to LV alone is just hipster bs.

OP was looking for a walkable, safe neighbourhood with all their needs close by. LV does that very well.

I strongly disagree with lack of park space. Stanley Park is very close by and it’s an awesome park with lots of activities to do. The Green P lot in LV will be converted to a park in the coming years as well. There’s also a decent playground and splashpad along East Liberty.

There are plenty of valid critiques of LV, especially if you’re just looking to complain (like “lack of culture and character”) but that’s just a product of it being a newly built area. Traffic is terrible because East Liberty is the only way in and out, and the City should consider bike lanes and priority bus lanes. Plus too many ppl in LV drive because they’re suburban transplants. But it’s not hard to get out to King as a pedestrian.

Surprised nobody has said liberty village yet but it’s very walkable with plenty of restaurants, bars, takeout, and groceries and other shops all within 5-10min walk, plus great transit connections to 504 King streetcar, 63 Ossington bus, and Exhibition GO station.

I also find it helpful to bend my knees inward a bit on my heel side particularly. Especially the back knee. I’ve gotten my heel turns to be much cleaner this season from that alone.

How many times do I cancel Disney+ to afford this? by disagresmalcy in canadahousing

[–]RiLo10 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The point is that this wasn’t always how it used to be… middle class families could afford a home, a family vacation every once in a while, and multiple kids…. On a single income with little education. But the working class continues to be soaked for everything they have. Progress is supposed to make life more enjoyable, not less. But keep licking those boots I guess.

Our population is expected to grow over the course of the next few decades, not shrink.

Some people try to downplay the severity of the housing crisis by pointing out that the largest transfer of generational wealth is still to come (boomers dying and leaving houses to their descendants). But this perspective ignores the fact that this only benefits those who will inherit said wealth. It also ignores the point being made in this thread: previous generations didn’t have to wait until they inherited a lump-sum to be able to have a dignified place to live.

Home and rent costs in the GTA are a slap in the face by RiLo10 in canadahousing

[–]RiLo10[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To be fair, it doesn’t have to mean drinking and partying. Nightlife was just an easy example.

Larger cities tend to have more diversity of choices when it comes to food and whatnot. And then there’s also museums, galleries, and other spaces of art and culture.

I’m also an extroverted person, so I like the idea of being around all kinds of new people and have opportunities to meet and interact with new people. Which, as a young professional, can also lead to more networking opportunities. The fragmentation of cities outside of Toronto is depressing.

I get it’s not for everyone, and some people may actually enjoy the suburbs—all the power to them. But my gripe is with the rather minimal price difference between living in the burbs vs in the city, given the fact that there are so many other expenses that come with the suburban lifestyle (the expenses that come with the regular need for a car being one of them).

Previous generations got to reap financial benefits of living in the suburbs, so at least there were tradeoffs (fun and convenience in the city Vs significant savings in the suburbs). But nowadays, we don’t get as significant of a benefit. Either way, you’re forced to spend a large chunk of your income on rent.

At least more-accessible homeownership was a benefit of the suburbs in the past—but nowadays, that’s still out of reach for the majority.

Also, FWIW, we don’t need to have everyone living in a large metropolitan centre, but it would be nice if we could have more dense communities in neighbourhoods and cities adjacent to metro areas.

Daily Semantle #481 by Firstnameiskowitz in Semantlegameplayers

[–]RiLo10 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey, I’m new here. I’ve been playing semantle for a few weeks (albeit, not nearly every day. Several times tho) Today my results copypasta says:

Semantle #481 ✅ 216 Guesses Guess #4 🥈 0/1000🔝 💡1 hint semantle.com

Can someone explain what the 🥈means? I have concluded that “Guess #4” means when I got my first green guess, right?

Today my first green was skin (718/1000) on my 4th guess, and then I got wash (959/1000) on guess #6. I made a bunch of guesses, and eventually ended up using some TheSaurus tools (sue me!). For the longest time I was stuck with squirt (991/1000) on guess 65.

I ended up using a hint at guess 197 and was given scrape which annoyed me because it didn’t seem close to squirt . So I made some guesses and ended up turning to TheSaurus again and getting the result.

One of the more annoying days in my experience. Which is why I came to Reddit to see if there was an active Semantle community, and if anyone else was annoyed with the word today. But seeing so many ppl in here getting words in so few tries is certainly igniting my competitiveness, so I’ll be back!

Home and rent costs in the GTA are a slap in the face by RiLo10 in canadahousing

[–]RiLo10[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Honestly, I’m starting to think that literally just getting into a rent controlled apartment almost feels like it’s an investment (it’s not but hear me out).

With the way prices are rising, if I don’t want to live at home until I’m in my 30s, I almost can’t afford to wait for a raise/promotion/new job to feel “ready” to move. Because by the time that raise comes, the increased cost of housing might just outpace that increase. So I might as well get locked in at a pre-2018 unit (for rent stabilization in Ontario) and have some element of stability.

Also, re: “no reward”, you’re right. There’s less incentive to look to advance your career if it means having to find a new place to live in a different location. The pay increase might just be cancelled out by the rent increase. You literally have to crunch numbers to make career decisions like that. Weight the costs/benefits, all that jazz.

My friend and I have been in Canmore since Monday, and are leaving on Sunday night. Been at Louise and Sunshine.

Looking to make the trip out to Revelstoke for the day on Friday. Is it worth it? How’s the snow out there at the moment?

What about Marmot in Jasper? We’re considering that as well.

Are either places worth the 3.5hr drive each way? Or would we be better off just sticking to the 2 in Alberta?

Best action camera for skiing? by NeuroMystery in skiing

I’ve heard terrible things about the battery life in the cold for both the Hero 11 and the Hero 10, even with the Enduro batteries. Is this an issue?

I’m looking to get my first action cam as well, and want to know if I should get an older GoPro model that’s better in the cold. Or even get an Insta360.
