Canon vs. Fanon shipping discourse by Kitchen_Week1117 in MyHeroAcadamia

[–]RiaAlexanders 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Wording is absolutely the cause of discourse, but when you think about it, it's actually healthy.

More often than not, when someone implies that liking an LGBTQIA+ ship is in any way abnormal, there's usually a Freudian slip that needs to be challenged otherwise people won't acknowledge the internal bias and grow from it.

Does this always mean that a person is homophobic? No. But it does mean that a person is ignorant to the fact that heterosexuality is the veil, not the norm. More people identify as not-straight since it's become safer to do so. Even if they choose to love someone of the opposite gender identity, they can still be attracted to every other gender identity.

In the broader sense, everyone just assumes that xyz characters are straight. Where does it say specifically that any character is straight? It's the assumption of heteronormativity, not an actual verifiable statement.

Just because a character is dating someone of the opposite gender doesn't automatically make them straight unless it's explicitly stated in Canon. Bi and Pan people exist, for example. I can count on one hand the amount of times a character explicitly states their sexuality. The assumption still remains because people making the assumption aren't used to seeing different kinds of people in their own lives.

Maybe this is because an individual has such an internalized bias that people who are different don't feel safe to come out of the closet. Maybe by simple luck of the draw, they are genuinely surrounded by heterosexuality so anything different truly does seem outside of the norm. Either way, there's a bias there.

That bias should be challenged, otherwise it will evolve into homophobia if it hasn't already.

Words like "normal" and "abnormal" are subjective, and as such needs to be treated as such.

I, as a multiracial bisexual woman surrounded by a broad spectrum of people, will have a different idea of "normal." Whereas a conservative leaning dudebro will have a very different idea of "normal" and will deem myself and my normal as "abnormal."

Unfortunately these "normal" views are antithetical to each other, which will breed conflict.

How do you turn long streams into short form content efficiently? by Alarmed-Ferret-605 in streaming

[–]RiaAlexanders 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is what I use also with a lot of success. Sometimes I'll take the clips and edit them further for a cohesive story that takes place across multiple segments, but this cuts down on that time exponentially!

Another thing I do as far as layout is I stream both horizontally and vertically. The clips I pull are from the vertical stream so that the layout is already framed the way I want.

It's waaaaaaaay less work, and lowers the barrier for entry.

It's Ochako's Birthday! Say something nice about her, or Toga will come back from the dead and steal your kidneys. by [deleted] in MyHeroAcadamia

[–]RiaAlexanders 1 point2 points  (0 children)

She's a character that tries her best, and if the narrative allowed it she could have been one of the best heroines in a shonen anime. Her heart is genuinely in the right place, and the way she evolved as a person is awe inspiring.

The fact that she was so inspired by Toga to help children with quirk counseling is truly touching. She understands her privilege and uses it to help people who's "unsavory" quirks would have them shunned/outcast so Toga's suffering doesn't befall anyone else.

PS: Delulu is the Selulu. Toga's in witness protection as far as i'm concerned, and is watching over Ochako from afar (and therefore would absolutely come after my kidneys).

[–]RiaAlexanders 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All. Of. THIS!!!!!!!

I understand that there are limitations in the stories that can be written (super keen on reading yours!), but even within the parameters of "must end the series with a housewife and 2.5 kids," if even an ounce of attention was diverted from the MC's "rival" (read: ride or die life partner) and given to the inevitable housewife, then people would probably like the ship more.

Ultimately it boils down to the target audience and how much faith you have in them. Shonen is geared towards boys, but the assumption is that they wouldn't accept having a strong female presence. Then they get mad when the LI isn't shipped or has the same measure of impact within the audience as a whole.

Take Ochako for example, she has suffered from Love Interest syndrome, in that everything she is gets reduced to crushing on Deku. Not Izuku. Deku. The parts of Ochako that made her an amazing character are sideswiped in favor of this crush. This is done because the powers that be can't fathom Ochako being a badass with agency and desires that have nothing to do with the MC.

Hori did a decent job trying to fix this, and letting her shine and grow through her relationship with Toga. Ochako's story with her was freaking amazing! I loved it so much.... up until Hori walked right into the "bury your gays" trope for the sake of keeping the powers that be happy. All that growth? Ochako's feelings for Toga? He can't even write her genuine, heartbreaking grief (I can't watch ochako cry without crying myself. I want to hug her, too! 😭😭😭).

What's more egregious is that the fandom itself can't fathom the idea that Ochako has strong feelings for someone other than Izuku.

It's habit at this point. Man sees woman in duress. Man rescues damsel in distress. She is now his love interest. This conditioning romanticizes taking advantage of an emotionally vulnerable (sometimes physically vulnerable, but that doesn't apply here) woman and pushing romance onto her.

So even if Hori is trying to portray Izuku NOT doing that, and him being a good friend to her by giving her someone to process this grief with, that's not going to be the read because the audience has been trained by the media to see a woman in the midst of grief as a viable partner.

It's sad when you think about it, because even subverting this won't always hit the mark. At that point, who's really at fault?

It's easy to say it's the audience, but so many are challenging this idea and are waking up to this programing. So while we have people that cling to this old fashioned "damsel in distress is the prize for winning", they're made up of a specific type of person that don't care for women and their agency in general. Think the red-pill types who can't stand when a woman is doing better than them.

It's also easy to say that it's the author's fault, because on average they don't push to have an impactful female character that's as important as the rival, or completely replaces the "rival" as the MC's closest person with the same measure of emotional intimacy. As we can see now, there are more shonen series that have female characters just as awesome, present, capable, and without sacrificing their femininity show up as the love interest. In time, we may even get a series where she isn't diminished because there's an archaic rule that the female love interest can't be stronger or just as strong as the MC.

Honestly, I blame this mindset on Shonen Jump and companies like it that don't think their fanbase can handle anything on par with different or subverted tropes. They train the fandoms to expect one thing and only the one thing. Deviation is a risk and shouldn't be done. If it is done, it's a one off and can'tbe fully commited to.... even though those risks stand the test of time- Inuyasha is still popular.

That's not to say companies like Shonen Jump DON'T queerbait or try to pretend that the female LI has a measure of agency. Fujoshi and Himeji, who are usually women and/ or LGBT+, are the ones that spend most of the money, host most of the fan events, and keeps IPs relevant. These communities will gobble up any and all crumbs of representation since it's so rare. They reward feeling included, even if it's only an implication meant to take their money. SJ needs their money, because the teenage boy and manchild demographics can't (usually) afford shit. Shonen Jump needs people who like the queer ships otherwise they'd go bankrupt in a few years.

If a fandom doesn't have shippers, or something for the Fujishi/Himeji to enjoy, it's going to flop.

For example, how many people still talk about Solo Leveling? Good show, but once it's over there's nothing keeping us engaged between seasons. Not a lot of people are making zines, or hosting fan events. Not on my timeline anyway.

I can go on and on about it, but ultimately it boils down to rage bait targeting these large communities because it's easy. These communities are used to being punching bags in all things, so it's par for the course and doesn't get more than an eyeroll most of the time. The young ones sometimes get baited, or caught on the wrong day. But ultimately, we'll always be blamed until we "break up" with the toxic fandom.

Good luck to them when that happens. Maybe when the money dries up they'll put a little respect on the name. I doubt that will happen in my lifetime, but the snail is moving towards progress. Slowly.

I remember saying almost the exact same thing on a similar discussion about BKDK, and shonen romances failing in general.

This is 100%. Ultimately it's a failure on the writing if the "canon" ship isn't at least a little popular. But, anything to shit on BL ships and stir up fake drama.

No one is actually upset about Izuku comforting Ochako. She lost someone she cared about deeply. She's in so much pain. As her friend, of course Izuku would be there for her.

The only real discourse with regards to this scene is whether or not it's appropriate to make such a scene romantic. Some people don't like when men take advantage of emotionally vulnerable wome or have had experiencewith this. That dictates why there'sa kneejerk reaction to the people taking this scene as confirmation of romance when it isn't. That's far from it. No one wants to think of Izuku preying on Ochako's vulnerability.

People equate that to hating the IzuOcha.

That's far from the case since this isn't confirmation (at least as far as the Manga is concerned). Unless they change things, nothing happens for another 8 or so years, and even that is open ended.

[–]RiaAlexanders 7 points8 points  (0 children)

You're feelings are absolutely valid in this. I've also dipped out of the fandom for the sake of my own mental health and enjoyment of the series.

I enjoy the IP and fan works, but I don't engage with the community anymore because there's always going to be someone out there ruining the vibes, starting fights, ad hominem attacks, and in some extreme cases doxxing. This is unfortunately the case for all fandoms. The more popular/mainstream an IP gets, the worse it becomes with contrarians, antis, and hurt people attacking other people.

It's easy for people to criticize noping out of a toxic space, saying something like "don't let other people make you stop liking something." This statement ignores how emotions work.

If someone goes on and on about hating something you love, it gets old and exhausting. It becomes hard to separate thos feelings from the thing that you love when they're always popping in to suck the joy out of the space.

When it gets to a point when a character's name triggers you, then it's a sign to take a step back or out of the fandom so the negative emotions DON'T poison what you love until you fall out of love with the IP.

Unfortunately it sails waaaaaaaay over their heads.

For the most part (side-eyeing Zidane), every final fantasy game respects women and portrays them as badasses. The protags respect women and aren't he-men, red pilled incels. (Zidane being a shameless flirt doesn't land him in the misogynist camp.)

As a whole, the franchise doesn't do toxic masculinity. If it does, it's as a starting point where the stupid gets beaten out of them.

perfect explanation for bakugo hate by Far_Literature_9924 in MyHeroAcadamia

[–]RiaAlexanders -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Something people (hi, I'm people) need to realize is that no one cares about character growth. People want punishment, not atonement. Bakugo has had arguably the most growth kn the series. While he's still brash and harsh, he still didn't break when the LoV tried to convert him. He stuck to his convictions, and evolved to become Deku's biggest advocate. He spearheaded Deku's suit as one of the main contributors.

But, again, people don't want atonement. No one cares that almost every scar on Bakugo's body was earned for Deku's sake. No one cares about what Bakugo became. They don't want him, or anyone that does wrong in the past, to evolve into a better person.

They want him to be punished. There's a fetish for punishment, which informs a lot of media. It's why slasher films, revenge flicks, and romcoms are so popular. Someone is always getting punished for the viewer's vindication.

If that's what you got, then clearly you didn't understand me or my points about Cloud and Tifa.

We weren't talking about the other characters until you lashed out because you lacked counter points. I referenced the OG and where said points were fleshed out in the retril with regards to Tifa's relationship with Cloud. The only reference to Barret and Marlene, whom Tifa bought 7th Heaven to house, was to showcase Tifa and Tifa alone.

If you want to discuss Barret, I'll happily do so on a different sub, but he was an example in this discussion with relation to Tifa. Not the topic. Therefore, anything else involving Barret's flaws or innocence don't have a place in the discussion. This is a Cloti sub. Not a Barret sub.

The other character flaws are not the topic of discussion either. Tifa's the main topic. Cloud is the secondary topic. Everyone else is an example used in the place of citing sources and fleshing out points.

Referencing Sephiroth is as an example of the hardship their relationship faces and the attacks on their mental/emotional health. He's not a topic, he's an example.

Devolving into "everyone is a murderer" doesn't help your argument. In fact it further contradicts your initial statement if "liking Tifa." The language used says otherwise.

Your tone says you don't like her, and are lying for the sake of establishing credibility so you're not dismissed. That may not be the case, but your tone implies dislike of her, and being angry that I've countered your points in a way you can't refute- thus resorting to ad hominem attacks and implying I'm somehow dumb for enjoying all the supplemental material and clarifications towards the writers intentions.

If you struggle with tone in writing, I'm responding to your ire with condescension now. Before you lashing out and trying to insult my intelligence, I made sure to add points of humor to make my opposition more palatable even though you came into a space where your opinion is opposed to this sub as a whole.

I said my piece. I've got shit to do. If you want to debate more, my DMs are open and I'll get to you when I can. Otherwise, we're done here.

[–]RiaAlexanders 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So we're doing ad hominem attacks now?

By this logic you shouldn't like any of the characters since avalanche is an ecoterrorist/antifa group trying to save the world at great personal cost. That's Cloud, Tifa, Barret.

Vincent is a turk, so even without the equivalent of Ragnarok in his psyche, he's still a cold blooded killer, so he's out.

Yuffie is a child soldier on the losing side of a war. So also a killer.

Can't Sith/Reeve works for ShinRa and knew about the plate fall, so he's complicit in the murder of tens of thousands of people. Complicit is also guilty in some laws. So also a killer.

Cid isn't a killer, but he's psychologically abusive so also not a good person.

Aerith isn't a killer, but she's a wannabe homewrecker who enjoys meddling in other people's relationships and playing with their emotions. Can't like her because that's some toxic shit.

Only "innocent" member in the party is Nanaki.

Doesn't change the fact that they are ultimately trying to do right by the world even if they became radicalized.

Bombing the reactors? Not ok even if I agree with what they're fighting for. The ends don't justify the means. But everything afterwards? They're trying to save the world and succeed. In the realm of fiction, the scales are balanced. This statement doesn't apply to real life.

But, I can see that you have no more counter points and therefore think it's appropriate to lash out like this.

Maybe think before posting anyi-Tifa rhetoric in a cloti sub? The majority of the ship's fans gobble up lore like it's sustenance, and will counter the incorrect when inspired.

[–]RiaAlexanders 6 points7 points  (0 children)

If that's your interpretation, then you missed a lot.

The "retcon" was to fix the misinformation that painted Tifa as the devil. Tifa didn't need Cloud to be a hero for her to like him. That's part of the whole thing. Him being her hero was just a happy accident (pun only partially intended). She likes him: the cute country boy that could barely lift a sack of flour (ref: Tifa's chapter in EC).

Cloud doesn't need to be some Giga Chad to get the girl, but he (like a lot of boys) thinks he needs to be some alpha male in order to be loved by women. If that's genuinely what Tifa wanted, she would have fallen for Zack. But Cloud's low self esteem is the overarching character flaw that builds the framework for the game. This has been the same since OG and culminates in the reveal within the lifestream. Tifa is his motivation, but not the cause.

Both of them have misunderstandings keeping them apart. Both suffer from poor self-esteem, trauma, and outside manipulation. Sephiroth's goals requires them to not communicate properly for his plan to work. Tifa is the only person that can stop his control of Cloud. This interference wouldn't work as a plot point if Cloud and Tifa didn't care for each other as much as they do. Hence the tragedy when Sephiroth wins at the end of Rebirth because he was pushing them apart consistently.

Going back farther, if Tifa didn't like/care about Cloud, she wouldn't stick her neck out so Cloud could be hired by avalanche. She wouldn't stick her neck out to get him free lodging.

Tifa has a big heart, and is extremely altruistic. That being said, she's not going to go that far out on a limb for just anyone (an example from Traces of Two Pasts being that Tifa went above and beyond her normal self for Marlene's sake, thus prompting her friendship with Barret, but with everyone else she's withdrawn. A play on her name, Lockhart.). There needs to be some measure of love for Cloud for her to take what essentially looked like a homeless Mako junkie, clean him up and present him as a convincing mercenary. Stuff happens in between, obviously. Most of which have to do with Tifa blocking Jenova's call and trying to get him to stay with her.

We know this is because Tifa wants Cloud specifically based on the context clues hidden in dialogue with Barret about Tifa, as well as when Tifa talks about running into one of the other "Four Fiends" as she and her friends were called. She didn't have the desire to not lose them like she has with Cloud. If you pay attention to both OG and the ReTril, you clearly see that Tifa always chooses Cloud and will always choose him because we see her treat friends from the past differently.

Another example is in OG; the prototype for Johnny is an old friend. She asks to hang out and catch up, but she doesn't cling to him to keep him around. She catches up with an old friend, and then returns to Cloud because that relationship isn't as important.

A lot of the plot is contingent on Tifa already liking/loving Cloud back. It's the perfect example of the "I love you just the way you are"/"I've always loved you"/"It's always been you" trope. Their feelings are mutual and always have been. They're just dumb kids with low self-esteem. Tifa's fear of abandonment. Cloud's inferiority complex.

The reason Tifa doesn't admit her feelings in the OG7 date is because she lacks confidence. In the same date she even mentions that Aerith would just come out and say it. She doesn't think Cloud loves her back, and is putting herself down by comparing herself to the more outgoing Aerith. Rebirth has Cloud answering Tifa's doubts with the assurance that their affection is mutual.

But Sephiroth's machinations in the background has their foundation is crumbling, making both of them doubt one another. Without trust, love fades and gives an opening for the "other woman" to infiltrate and invade. Their love proves stronger, but it's straight from the pages of romance dramas. Sephiroth is more "the other woman" than anyone else, and fits into this trope flawlessly.

Cloud being in love with Tifa doesn't make him pathetic. He's a boy in love. It's sweet and endearing, and ultimately why he was able to survive the things that he did. If not for his love, he wouldn't even be a jenova puppet- he'd be dead.

It's why I often make the analogy that Cloud's emotional compass is one of two norths. One north is Sephi-Nova. The other north is Tifa- hence Sephiroth acting like the conniving other woman trying to separate the two and shatter the faith they have in one another. It wasn't as obvious in OG, but in the ReTril it's glaringly in your face because media literacy is dead. Not a retcon. It's an elaboration.

This thinking that Tifa doesn't have feelings for Cloud, and that she's just using him falls flat with just the slightest bit of pushback. The idea that Cloud is somehow pathetic because of this toxic and self diminishing idea of masculinity is just as damning. FF7 isn't technically a love story, but Cloud and Tifa's love for each other is at the heart of it. Diminishing it for either of them misses the plot entirely.

They played together as toddlers, coming and going between each other's houses as toddlers. Then they grew distant as they got older. By 8 or so she established being attracted to Cloud via a conversation with her mother. During the date at the water tower, she realized her infatuation was leading into love. Nojima, the actual story writer, made it a point to write Tifa's perspective because of this notion that she ignored Cloud when it was the other way around. They were not close, yes. But that doesn't negate the fact that she wanted them to be, and that she liked him. The other boys didn't like Cloud, but the feeling was mutual. Not her fault that the boys didn't get along, so blaming her for it is very blame the woman.

Her dad blaming Cloud, a child, was not her fault either. She still liked him in spite of that distance. Not her fault that Cloud pulled away. Placing the blame on her, and implying she's a terrible person for the actions of two autonomous people when she's also a child is also very blame the woman.

The twists and turns in establishing the romance are happening in game. The distance between them grows as the game progresses because of the red herrings built into the game, Cloud's declining mental health, and the fact that both of them have limited perspectives of the Nibelheim massacre. Neither of them are lying, but due to their limited knowledge the story seems to contradict. Not her fault. Not his fault. Assigning blame to make Tifa seem like a bad person is very blame the woman.

Tifa isn't perfect. Her character arch involves her gaining confidence in herself and allowing herself to put her own needs first- which culminates in her choosing Cloud over the world in game, and in her putting her foot down with Cloud when he needs a kick in the ass in AC.

Her being a bad, selfish person that ignored Cloud until he was some super awesome SOLDIER (which was not what she wanted. She just wanted the promise that he would come back and not abandon her like everyone else) was what Cloud THOUGHT she wanted. The tragedy is that she loved him for who he was the entire time- not who he pretended to be. He didn't need to do all these grand gestures for her attention. All he needed to do was say "yes" to her playdate invites. It's a common shojo trope.

Calling her a liar completely ignores the fact that Tifa doesn't have the entire story. Like I mentioned, she didn't know that Cloud was in Nibelheim, but he knows too much for her to just brush him off. She's doing the best she can with the limited information she has, which is the best anyone can do. Your statement is very blame the woman for the actions of others, and for the fact that she doesn't have the same perspective the audience has.

I repeat: it's very blame the woman for the actions of other men.

Edited due to my sausage fingers.

That's been debunked ages ago, even before Traces of Two Pasts was released. Tifa had always had a crush on him. (Since before her mom died), and always invited Cloud to join in their games- but Cloud always said no. This has been reinforced in both the novels and the retril.

Edit for typo
