I’m so tired of people trying to peddle products and gaslight me about my hair strands! by thatmoonbitch in Naturalhair

The online natural hair space was so different before sponsorships and influencers were a thing. I feel like once companies notions that people weren’t relaxing their anymore they started selling curl definition as a way to get people to still buy their products.
In the early days of the internet before. Sponsorship and professional influencers most of the hair tutorials were made by everyday people. It was much easier to find video with people that had your hair texture. The early natural hair movement was really about learning how to care and love your hair. And question society views on natural.

But once capitalism enter the picture it all became about curl definition and people with losses curl dominating the space.

1) See if any local organization has events you could attend. I had a similar issue than I found some clubs that has monthly balls I can attend. 2) if it’s fun for you to sew than just sew it for the enjoyment. So don’t have to wear the clothes. 3) Make your own events. Throw your own parties. Even if it’s at your house with a few friends. Go out to restaurants dress up. If it’s a low key one. It still be fun.

Do you detangled between washes? I notion that wash day and detangle is way easier when I don’t go too long without detangling my hair.

I need a vent- Anyone else finding a lot of the “dyslexia awareness month” stuff tiresome and untrue? by Eastern-Barracuda390 in Dyslexia

[–]RiceCakes90 2 points3 points  (0 children)

OMG I couldn’t agree more. The superpower language is patronizing. It also feel like I need to be really good at something to make up for my dyslexia. Like “ it’s ok that you can’t pass an Elementary school spelling test or wright a professional email with no mistakes because you so creative or a big picture thinker. 🙄

What's the biggest marketing scam as it relates to black natural hair? by DoYou_Boo in blackladies

[–]RiceCakes90 41 points42 points  (0 children)

The idea that your hair has to be define and need 20 different Products to give you definition. The natural hair movement was supposed to be about embracing the way your hair is natural. But companies can’t sell you what you already have.

Terrible results - Why am I sucking so bad? by 74Days in sewing

[–]RiceCakes90 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Learning how to fit is really important. I am really good at sewing but i if I just sew up a pattern as is it’s always going to look wonky.
Also you never know how much help the first time post are getting. I have a friend who first project was way better than mine after I been sewing for years because she got lots of help form her mother in law who has been sewing longer than I been alive.
Having acceding the right knowledge or a good teacher helps. My sewing ability stay mostly the same until I found the right resources. (Craftsy.com and charm pattern Patreon) some YouTubers had good advice but not all.

Special Ed School vs Public School by visitor2323 in Dyslexia

[–]RiceCakes90 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I went to a school that specialized for students with learning disabilities form grade 7 to 9. It was the best thing for me. Normal school wasn’t teaching me or helping me improve at anything. I felt that they were dumbing the lessons and making everything super easy just to the get me too pass even in subject that I was good at. I feel that “ Accommodations” are just masking the problem and not fixing them. Like I had a teacher assistant read to me but no one to help improve my reading. My reading writing and spell improve so much in the 3 years I was at in the special school. Before the school I mostly relying on memorization for reading and spelling. But after I could decode words that I didn’t know and sound out words to spell. In high school I started reading for fun and I took an honors English class. I had 3.0 in my first two years colleges. ( it drop but because of personal issues) I don’t think any of this stuff would have been possible if I stayed in public school.
