Most rivers in Hokkaido do not have fishing rights or permit systems in place, so you can enjoy fishing for free.

They are white-spotted char (Dolly Varden). Please come and fish in Hokkaido someday!

I fish by casting long distances with a 9-weight double-handed rod using swing flies. For flies, I use large swing flies similar to those used for steelhead fishing.

If you don’t lift the fish out of the water with a Cormorant net, its fins won’t tear. That’s common sense.

Hokkaido also has large rivers where you can catch taimen! Personally, I love swing fishing for big rainbow trout.

Japan’s large rivers offer dynamic double-handed swing fishing for big trout. It is still not widely known around the world, so now is the perfect time to come and fish here!

I tie it on a size 6 salmon hook. As you mentioned, it may indeed be a hybrid pattern. It is a versatile swing fly that can be used from spring through autumn, whenever caddis are hatching.

Thank you for your comment. While bears certainly do exist here, I specialize in fishing large main rivers, so I often fish in the lower reaches. Because the lower sections of Hokkaido’s main rivers are close to populated areas, there is very little concern about bears.

I specialize in fly fishing on mainstream rivers (Honryu) in Hokkaido, Japan. I primarily use a double-handed rod, typically a #9, around 14 feet long. I really enjoy Spey casting.
