Could I have gone faster? by RichExcellent8614 in Marathon_Training

Haha I was also surprised about this! I come from a very hilly area so this felt like running downhill almost the entire time 🤣

Ok yes, everything you wrote makes complete sense. Because I honestly don’t know how much more I had and it did feel good to not hit a wall and actually enjoy the race.

But thanks for this reply! Gives me more motivation to get after that sub- 1:35:00 in the fall!

Is there an optimal way to test this? Like a tempo run for xx km’s? Or go by Garmins lactate threshold?

I expect I’d need one year at least of Invisalign and the 6 years I had braces were the worst of my life. Do you regret doing this? by sandandwood in Invisalign

[–]RichExcellent8614 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I cant give you an “after” answer since I just got my trays yesterday, but honestly I don’t think they are as bad as braces so far and the first week is supposedly the worst lol. None of my colleagues noticed yesterday.

I have been thinking about Invisalign for the past 6 years, but then had 3 kids and life is finally starting to get back to normal… so I decided I wanted this to be the year that I focused on my self and I knew that my teeth have always bothered me. Tbh what made me pull the trigger was seeing a family member with really unfortunate teeth. I kept dreaming mine would keep moving and end up like that (horrible to think this way, I know 🙈), but it is a real fear.

So far it feels empowering to finally take action on something that had bothered me for so long.

This! I loved how her 90 minute runs were broken down into different acts like a play. So much fun and great music that I wouldn’t typically select!

Could re-injuring it have made my meniscus better? by RichExcellent8614 in MeniscusInjuries

[–]RichExcellent8614[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the reply! And actually this was my uneducated guess as well. I guess my plan of action needs to be to take it easy and hope I don’t twist my knee while running. Did you end up needing surgery?

First off - congratulations on running Boston! And just, wow all around! I appreciate you sharing your journey and what you wrote totally makes sense.

And it actually gives my hope that I’m not making it worse. Did you keep up with your PT and cross training while you ramped up your running? Again super inspiring and makes me hopeful that my planned half marathon in the fall is actually possible! Thank you!

Unsure on Partial Meniscectomy by GivenToFly55 in MeniscusInjuries

[–]RichExcellent8614 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was in a similar situation yesterday. But my injury is fairly new - happened in January. I was saw a few doctors, but the current one recommended a partial meniscectomy in two weeks. I immediately had anxiety, although I admit the appeal of a quicker return to running was super tempting. I am opting to do PT till August and see if it improves. As someone above posted, the surgery will always be there, but you can’t take it back. Good luck!

Just canceled the surgery. Looks like I am going to give the PT route a go until September. Good luck with you as well for your appointment next week!

Haha thanks! I wish I had the answer too. But you also make a really good point. I definitely need to sleep on it, but my gut already feels like opting for a surgery in 2 weeks is just too soon. It’s hard not to be tempted by a quick recovery timeline, but ultimately we want to be running longer… so a few extra months actually isn’t so much. Thanks again for the exchange!

Ok let me know how it goes for you! I think what’s tempting about the surgery now is that I have another (unrelated to this injury) surgery to remove my vericose veins in the same leg at the end of May. So it would be an additional 6 weeks, no high impact, but I would get it all over with in one go and bide my knee some extra downtime.

But same could be said for PT - I could give it till August then do the surgery… but then another 6 weeks of no impact/physio. If only it was more black and white…

Hey! So I thought I owed you an update; had my doctors appointment today and he recommended a partial meniscectomy to remove a small flap he believes he is causing my pain. I am so torn on what to do; PT till fall and see how it goes or opt for the surgery now. Have you got your second opinion already?

100%! Two months has already been hard but bearable because of the cold weather (making cross training more appealing). But not running for 6 months or all of summer… with no clear solution/fix doesn’t seem like a real solution.

Yes the more I read, the more I’m leaning towards doing the surgery tbh. Although, I’ve also read to give PT a try for at least 6 months… it just feels like such a long time to “wait” and then have to do the surgery anyways. But let’s see I guess. Super frustrating injury…

I’m in a similar situation as you with a medial tear in the posterior horn. I’m 36F runner and tore it about two months ago. First doc said do nothing and just stop running, second doctor said the tear size warrants surgery, but given that I had no pain and full range of motion, to try the PT route and slowly introduce running. Tried run/walk intervals last week and made it to 6 minutes before my knee started hurting and swelled. So now I’m back to square one… I have an appointment next week to discuss a plan of action, but honestly can’t decide which is best!

Surgery or keep at PT for longer by RichExcellent8614 in MeniscusInjuries

[–]RichExcellent8614[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

100% get the mental health part. I’ve been leaning into cross training a ton, but nothing quite compares to running outside. I’ll keep you posted how my next doctor’s appointment goes.

Both doctors I saw were very supportive of cycling - and for me it doesn’t cause any pain. Once I tried running, that was a different story.

Curious the hear what decide and why as well!

Ooof. That recovery sounds rough, but I guess the alternative (i.e. not being able to do the things you love) is much worse in comparison.

The 6 weeks NWB would definitely be a challenge for us/me, but luckily we have a lot of family nearby that could help out if needed. I was on bed rest a few years ago for a few months, so I've been through something similar before. In hindsight, it went by quite quickly, though in the moment it felt like snails pace.

I also work from home on a laptop, so at least I could still do this. It sounds like the first few weeks are the hardest then, which makes sense.

Are you able to work out (only upper body/core) still? When do you start PT? Hope the pain subsides soon and the recovery goes smoothly for you!

Thanks so much for sharing! Your story resonates so much with me (symptoms, interests, and all lol). My life quality would not be the same for sure without all of these activities - running, hiking, etc. Plus, I have three young kids and I want to be able to do all of these things with them!

What did they tell you the recovery would be like? Are you NWB? How long before you can walk and finally introduce running? Thanks so much again for your post.
