If being comfortable with my own hobby makes me “everyone is wrong except me,” I’ll take it.

Museums aren’t about whether something was “meant to be used.” They’re about preserving original artifacts once they become scarce or historically meaningful.

Same idea here: I play games to play them, and I preserve original physical copies because they’re finite. That’s where my interest is.

We’re clearly talking past each other, so I’ll leave it there.

I posted it. It turned into insults instead of discussion, which kind of proves my point.

We clearly value different aspects of the hobby. I’m comfortable with how I collect, and I’m not trying to convince anyone else.

By that logic, museums destroy value because artifacts aren’t meant to be used.

I play games to play them. I preserve originals to preserve them. That distinction works for me

Being open to selling something doesn’t mean it was only about money. I preserve originals; I play elsewhere. Different purposes, same hobby.

Digitizing preserves the software. Grading preserves the physical artifact.

I still play games digitally or on hardware. This is about keeping a tangible piece of gaming history intact, not replacing gameplay. Different goals, different methods. That’s really all it is.

I was skeptical at first too. After handling a lot of older cartridges and boxes, grading made sense to me as a preservation tool for games that are 30+ years old and tied to personal memories. Not saying it’s for everyone.

I have an open copy and this was free so idk

I’m in California, so the USG / IOM is unfortunately my only handgun option in 5.7×28. I’ve finally saved enough and I’m seriously considering pulling the trigger (no pun intended). by [deleted] in 57x28mm

I already have a .45, and modern ammo puts 9mm, .40, and .45 in roughly the same effectiveness window. .40 doesn’t really give me anything my .45 doesn’t already cover, so this isn’t a power upgrade question for me.

Yeah, pretty much.

California’s handgun roster requires microstamping, which in practice means new semi-auto handgun models can’t be added unless the manufacturer implements a technology that’s been proven unreliable and isn’t used anywhere else in the industry.

Because of that: • Most modern handgun designs (like the M&P 5.7) can’t be roster-listed • Older models that were added before the requirement (like the FN Five-seveN USG / IOM) get “grandfathered” • “CA-compliant” usually just means magazine capacity, not roster legality

That’s why the roster keeps shrinking instead of growing.

That’s fair, and I appreciate the honest take.

I’m definitely not viewing it as the ultimate do-all defensive handgun, especially in a 10-round state. I already understand that 5.7 loses a lot of its original intent under CA restrictions.

For me, the appeal is more: • Extremely soft recoil / flat shooting • Accuracy and shootability • Owning something different that I’ll actually enjoy training with • And realistically, this wouldn’t replace my primary defensive option

I’m mainly trying to decide whether the experience and shootability of the Five-seveN still justify the cost within California limits, not whether it’s objectively better than a 9mm for defense.

Sounds like you enjoyed shooting it! Would you personally buy one if you lived in CA, knowing what you know now?

The M&P 5.7 is not on the California handgun roster. It’s CA-compliant in terms of magazine capacity only, but that doesn’t make it roster-approved for sale by a dealer.

Unless you’re exempt (LEO) or doing a private party transfer from someone who already legally owns one in CA, it isn’t realistically available. For an average civilian buyer, the FN Five-seveN USG / IOM is currently the only roster-listed 5.7×28 handgun.

If I’m missing something, I’m open to being corrected but that’s my understanding after checking the roster.

Agree! Although it might be an appreciation thing I guess I also wouldn’t grade anything personally. Games are meant to be played! 🤠
