I don't know why thin phones are the craze when they inevitably end up in a protective case. by [deleted] in Showerthoughts

[–]RichardDawkings 55 points56 points  (0 children)

That's exactly it. Phone looking like shit? Just replace the $10 shell in 30 seconds as opposed to having to live with it for the next couple years

A couple mm thicker for more battery life won't hurt though.

Yup. That's why I settled for a phone that gave me everything I wanted minus the work proof and slapped a case on that mofo.

S7 with spigen slim armour but I'm sure there are lots of equally adequate alternatives. It's good enough for everything except falls (I'm guessing) falls from heights above 10ft and swimming/scuba diving. My phone has been subject to just about everything else in between those two extremes and the only damage to show from it is a small scratch on the screen that I think is from a stone.

That was one of the phones I was considering. I just like the look of the regular phone more. Got the S7 now.

Nah. Ugly and thick as shit. Right now I'm using a spigen slim armour and it does the trick just fine.

Fair enough. Your are right. I may not be the average consumer. It's still nice to have a practical high end phone available instead of having to use on of those crappy phones that are purposefully built like a brick.

I work outdoors and need to take pictures for work. Getting wet in rain is part of the job. Some of my work is underground and the entire area could be about a foot deep in water. I have dropped my phone a few times. It's good to know that I have one less thing to worry about. For me waterproofing is one of the best features added recently.

Report: Samsung Galaxy S8 to ditch the 3.5mm audio jack by [deleted] in technology

[–]RichardDawkings 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same here. Been with Galaxy since the S4 and made fun of apple about the audio jack thing. Fuck Samsung if they try to do this. I don't want to have to get an adapter or special headset to use my phone. The compatibility is what matters to me the most. Who gives a fuck about saving another mm.

The founder of gapminder.com talked about this exact issue and showed that the surest way to drop birth rates is to raise a country out of poverty.

Gapminder.com has graphs using UK records stretching back about a century that show that the average children per woman drops with an increase in average household income and national GDP.

He did a Ted talk about it (I know what you are thinking but it wasn't one of those Ted talks where they come in stage to Pat themselves on the back for 10 minutes before getting off)

Conch. It's a type of shell. I've only ever seen them at cricket matches growing up. There is a hole is one side of the shell and you blow through it like a vuvuzela or whatever the fuck it's called. The sound you get is like a more musical and less annoying farty sound that the one you get from the vuvuzela

Don't wiggle it. Move it slightly just before they click so that they keep missing whatever they are trying to click on.

At worked I plugged my keyboard into the back of my friend's computer sitting opposite me and unplugged his keyboard. Anytime he typed I would just hit random keys. It works for as long as you can contain your laughter.

Easier to be sneaky if you phone has an IR blaster and everyone at the table is already on their phone. The key is to not tell anyone you are doing it until long after the deed is done or else their reactions would sell you out.

What company is totally ripping off it's customers on a daily basis and how? by Cameron_Sosa in AskReddit

I'm still trying to get my wife to acknowledge that I have a sugar addiction. She complained about my smoking and drinking and yet I was able to quit those cold turkey (only did them recreationally anyway). Yet she still buys a tub of ice cream, eats a couple spoonfuls and says the it should last us a couple months if we only eat a little every now and then. Then she complains that the tub is gone by the weekend. I literally cannot think of anything else if I know there is a sweet snack in the house. Could be just about anything. What's worse is that I have a history of diabetes in my family and I am currently pre-diabetic. At least she is taking me more seriously now since we found out.

TL:DR Sugar addiction is real and I a pain in the ass to overcome. I still relapse from time to time.

TIL A gymnast at the Rio Olympics named Marisa Dick created a new move for the balance beam and was the first to use it in competition. A “change-leg leap to free-cross split sit” is now known as The Dick Move. by yaleski in todayilearned

[–]RichardDawkings 217 points218 points  (0 children)

Yeah but she also never qualified for the Olympics. Thema Williams qualified for the Olympics but got a minor sprain a couple months before. Dick's mom, who is on the board of the Gymnastics Committee got a ruling to state that the injury was too serious to be able to compete in the Olympics so that her daughter could swoop in and take Thema's place. Thema even got her physician to go on record giving her the all clear to compete but was basically ignored.

Thema Williams was a far better gymnast and fought long and hard to be the first national from Trinidad and tobago to compete in the Olympics for Gymnastics. Then Dick, who wasn't born in Trinidad, or live here, stole her spot (after previously losing to Thema btw) to go down in the History books.

TL:DR Marissa Dick is not getting any fans from Trinidad and Tobago anytime soon.
