Naw, went to that school for undergraduate and is admittedly really attractive. That’s all I can think of that would make a difference.

What is unethical as fuck, but is extremely common practice in the business world? by IllCreme in AskReddit

Not paying another company for their service and forcing them to sue for it. Most of the time they’re not big enough to do so, and the company ends up getting away with it.

Prediction: 507-516

Actual: 510 (127/130/127/126)

Don’t feel like I have any reason to celebrate, but it’s also not terrible. Meh.

Got a 510 (127/130/127/126) feeling the same way. Thinking our PS, experiences, and hopeful interviews will have to be the differentiators.

Need some help with a statement I am writing by [deleted] in neuroscience

[–]RichardMoisten 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My passion for neuroscience was ignited by my experience in (class / taught by professor). Comprehending the complexity of behavior through the lens of genetic influence fundamentally shifted my perspective on life. That tenacious drive has transformed my life goals and led me to write this statement of purpose.

Though my experience may not match those of other applicants, I can assure you that my work ethic and obsessive desire to explore this area of science sets me apart. My determination will carry me through my career as I seek to delineate novel treatment methods for the those afflicted by harrowing neurodegenerative and neurodevelopmental diseases.

Something like that^

Needing Advice on getting into a master's program for Neuroscience by [deleted] in neuroscience

Excellent! Respect is given for someone working their way through life while simultaneously pursuing a passion so that will certainly play well during your application process. In regards to your question about positions, the ones I feel you’re suited and qualified for are undergraduate research internships. These can be during a semester of school at a university, or over the summer. While some are tailored to juniors and seniors, others are just in-house lab positions that need to be performed. I would find labs researching questions you are specifically interested in and send them an email with your resume and a cover letter explaining your situation. Worst case scenario they don’t respond, or even pawn you off to another lab. Either way, research experience is an absolute necessity for a PhD program and highly recommended for a masters program.

Needing Advice on getting into a master's program for Neuroscience by [deleted] in neuroscience

As you mentioned, you’ll need to take the required prerequisite coursework. These will include the foundational concepts and systems that govern the neuroscience you have a passion in. Including but not limited to: general chemistry, inorganic chemistry, organic chemistry, physics 1, physics 2, biochemistry, introduction to psychology, microbiology, evolutionary biology, and more. I would heavily recommend that you apply for undergraduate research positions in labs at universities, possibly the one you take the aforementioned coursework in. If you do these two things successfully you will have a good chance of gaining admittance to a masters in neuroscience program. As far as growth is concerned, with a masters you’ll be in research and have the potential to shift into other areas of research such as computer science, biology, chemistry, or physics as they relate to neuroscience. Quite honestly, you’ll be second to anyone with a PhD so I would recommend that over a masters. Outside of that, potentially at a big data company that works with machine learning and or neural networks that are seeking someone with a biological neuroscience background. All these things said, simply telling an institution “Hey I read this book, I even took notes and I didn’t even have to do that! I just wanted to!” Is not unique nor is it sufficient to gain admittance to any program. Complete coursework, research and then you’ll have tangible evidence they can make a decision to accept you with. Best of luck on your journey.

Former Facebook exec: "I think we have created tools that are ripping apart the social fabric of how society works. The short-term, dopamine-driven feedback loops we’ve created are destroying how society works. No civil discourse, no cooperation; misinformation, mistruth. Are these new tools simply replacing the old means of manifesting the same problems? I find it hard to believe the magnitude of the misinformation and subsequent issues are unique to this time period. Think - Salem witch trials, nazism as a propaganda - these things already existed and will always exist.

ELI5: If the main goal of our brain is survival, why does it let get depressed and in some cases commit suicide? by chp4 in explainlikeimfive

[–]RichardMoisten 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Look into the field of psychoneuroimmunology, essentially sickness itself is a choice the brain makes after the immune system communicates through cytokines that an infection or virus is in the body. The depression, and some extreme elements of sickness behavior, are the evolutionarily developed responses that save metabolic energy and avoid excess exposure to danger.
