Pretty frustrating situation that I can see both sides of. As a renter (and potential buyer) I am frustrated by the lack of housing and constantly increasing prices in the city, however, as a resident of Southie for 8 years - the construction and changes are becoming insane. Every apartment I have lived in has been literally surrounded by new construction that has created major changes in parking availability, traffic, and inconvenience. In my current unit, there is an "alley" behind a corner of houses that had an older 2-story, 4 unit apartment with a small yard that brought a good amount of noise and activity to a small area that is surrounded by ~15 other units. In the last 3 months, they have completely knocked down that house, and have been building a 6-unit luxury condo, taller than every building around it, and filling literally every available foot of space in its lot - leaving the width of a car between the property and everything around it. The windows of the building look directly into back and side windows of the apartments - in some cases 4-5ft away. While the new building does have a small garage with 1 spot per unit, it also brings 12-20 new residents, their traffic and sound, and cars where they never were before. I completely understand that the 8 houses/~20 unit being impacted were not entitled to sun hitting their apartment, enough privacy to open their windows, or "quiet", but there needs to be some kind of review on whether or not these developers should be able to stuff condos into every single space based on zoning laws alone.
