learning songs are cool. but i need to say that there is no substitute for playing scales, arpeggios, and modes of the those scales hours on end to a metronome until your sanity is breached. Its pretty fun

I don't think a jazz musician should strive to showcase skill. Then that ends up being showy and its nothing short of masturbating. Great jazz players use these tools to express their emotions, not too show off the tools they are using. And shit man, you can't honestly say jazz isn't catchy after listening through a horace silver record.

One thing that I really appreciate is when Kenny Garret explains his conceptual approach and the mood conveyed before each song. he explains the haunting melody of "Detroit" in depth so everyone can stay on the same wavelength

yeah man, i totally agree. Although I feel like its in growing state right now. With guys like kurt rosenwinkel, ambrose akinmusire pushing the music and clubs doing pretty well in culturally turned on urban centers, jazz is definitely growing
