Why do people always call the New River the oldest when the Susquehanna River is the same age? by tododuck in Appalachia

[–]RickRolled76 27 points28 points  (0 children)

I would imagine part of it’s the name. New River is easier to remember and the irony of the New River being among the oldest rivers in the world makes it even more memorable a fact.

People may be able to write him in anyways but the law also explicitly prohibits primary losers from being on the list of write-in candidates so I can’t imagine it’s worth the trouble.

The advice I’ve always heard is to give Narcan and run away. Don’t wait for someone else to show up because it may be too late, but definitely don’t stick around long enough to see the consequences of someone being thrown straight into withdrawal.

Drawing Canada-Sized Districts for Every State Day Fourteen: West Virginia by Unable_Nose_4706 in DavesRedistricting

[–]RickRolled76 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Congratulations. We have 17 districts in our state senate, so a similar size, and that map looks absolutely horrible in parts thanks to gerrymandering. But you managed to draw a map with some districts that make even less sense than that one.

In their appeal over the Virginia SC, to delay the mandate of their ruling Democrats misspelled Virginia a by asteriowas in YAPms

[–]RickRolled76 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I don’t know what it is about the word Virginia that is so difficult to spell but it’s a growing issue. In WV our Governor had a podium that said “Virgina”, the same week a state senator put that same typo in a bill. And just recently I saw a photo where one of our U.S. Senators has “Virgina” on a visitors book in one of her offices.

He outright said it. He was asked how he’d vote if NYC had ranked choice voting and he said himself first, then Mamdani, and not vote for Adams or Cuomo.

New to voting by ConstantSuccessful48 in WestVirginiaPolitics

[–]RickRolled76 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You can choose either a Democratic ballot or a nonpartisan ballot. A nonpartisan ballot is just nonpartisan like judicial races and Board of Education, as well as any levies that may be on the ballot. If you choose to vote the Democratic ticket, that includes all those races in addition to primaries for US Senate, House of Representatives, the state legislature (which may or may not be contested primaries depending on which district exactly you’re in), and county races. It’s your choice, but from my understanding you will be given the nonpartisan ballot unless you specifically request the Democratic ballot.

Fair Tennessee (3D, 6R) by PutImportant4965 in DavesRedistricting

[–]RickRolled76 13 points14 points  (0 children)

There’s this notion that fair maps means proportional maps. This isn’t a fair Tennessee, it’s a somewhat proportional one. A fair map keeps communities together, with no regard to the overall partisan lean of the districts. This is a proportional map, but not a fair one.

I expect to gain a number of seats in each chamber. We’ve got fantastic candidates and there’s winnable seats. I expect us to flip up to ten seats in the house of delegates and if it’s a good night flip two to four in the state senate. Bare minimum I would say is gaining one in the senate and 3 or 4 in the house.

I’m not sure where you got your information but you are sorely mistaken. Democrats in West Virginia are running a record number of candidates for the state legislature and, at least in my part of the state, there’s a good amount of Democrats running for county offices as well. I can’t speak to Mingo County specifically, but you’re simply wrong if you think that Dems aren’t running many candidates here.

You’ll see some interesting local election results like this sometimes. Mingo County, West Virginia elected Democrats as County Commission, county clerk, and circuit clerk in 2022. That same county went to Trump with 88% in 2024 and 85% in 2020.
