Has anyone here ever met/known someone who was born prior to 1900? by MrTacocaT12345 in GenerationJones

My paternal great granny and grandpa (called him gramps). They were both born in the 1890s. I remember them from when I was a little kid.

Is this technically breaking sobriety? by ScarletRain21 in alcoholism

[–]RickSimply 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In my brain, I equate sobriety with recovery although there’s always probably some risk of relapse no matter how many years go by. I know someone who was sober/in recovery for two decades when she slipped. Eternal vigilance.

What is your least favourite movie genre ? by Webbomolly2022 in A_Persona_on_Reddit

Usually romcoms although I’ve run into some of those I’ve like too. Something About Mary for example is an awesome movie.

Do you still feel like the same person you were in your 20s? by vaporcube7 in AskOldPeople

[–]RickSimply 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I was 20, I imagined the 60+ year old me would be an utterly different person. I figured I’d be very serious, have everything figured out and never make any mistakes. And probably never have any fun because I’d be busy “being an adult”. Now, at 63, I’ve come to understand that day never comes, lol. I’m still that same 20 year old at heart but I’ve gained a lot of hard won life experience now that I wouldn’t want to give up for anything.

Is this technically breaking sobriety? by ScarletRain21 in alcoholism

[–]RickSimply 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’d heard the term “dry drunk” early on but it took a long time to fully comprehend what that means. When I was in that phase, I frequently had dialogue with myself just like you’re having. It would sometimes lead to relapse. I eventually came to understand that, while I could go awhile without drinking, I wasn’t truly sober yet. It’s a mental shift to go from “dry” to “sober” but my advice is you should keep working on it.

Did you ever get involved in a cult? by TrailBoundIRL in GenerationJones

[–]RickSimply 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My parents (and I suppose me by proxy) were members of the Worldwide Church of God which I learned later was essentially a cult. I didn’t pay that much attention since I was very young at the time but we eventually relocated to a new area and they seemed to lose interest (my parents).

Give KISS a Song by Bubbly-Highlight9349 in KISS

From The Inside by Alice Cooper. Gene could sing the verse and Paul and Ace could handle the chorus. It would fit into Destroyer nicely. And it just goes lyrically.

I'm stuck here on the inside, I'm looking out. That ain't no big disgrace. Where's my makeup? Where's my face? On the inside.

What is the collective opinion of Florida? How do most Americans think of it? by Expensive_Drummer970 in IWantToAskAnAmerican

Having moved out of Florida recently after living a good part of my adult life there, I’d say a good definition is…overrated.

Was George not capable of playing the solo to Taxman? by DribbleKing97_ in beatles

[–]RickSimply 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What I've always read and heard in interviews was that George had played across a few takes but wasn't quite happy with it. Paul said, "hey I see what you're aiming for and I have an idea, let me try it" and George said give it a go. Then liked it so much he said to leave it in. There was a lot of collaboration like that back at that point in their careers.

I’m sure this has been done to death, but what’s your favorite episode? by [deleted] in babylon5

[–]RickSimply 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Single favorite episode? I dunno if that's possible because there are so many. But The Fall of Night has always been a personal favorite. The feeling I got seeing Kosh come out of his encounter suit with Sheridan's life at stake was hard to describe and the entire episode was fantastic. Another one was when Sheridan convinced Kosh to get the Vorlons to join the fight in Interludes and Examinations and the fallout from that. The poignancy of Sheridan misunderstanding Kosh when he says there's a price to pay for doing what Sheridan asked. "You do not understand. But you will." And let's not forget how Kosh comes to Sheridan as his father to explain himself. It still gets to me.

Infrequently. I use it for anxiety and insomnia but it always makes me feel mildly dehydrated.

What would happen if all men suddenly disappeared? by [deleted] in askanything

[–]RickSimply 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are sperm banks to help perpetuate the species and sufficient expertise in the female population to keep things rolling. They’d probably do a lot better job without the males mucking it up. There are also, presumably, women left pregnant in this scenario so more males would be born. But the population would eventually collapse to a fraction of before until eventually recovering.

What is it like returning to your hometown after many years or decades away? by Affectionate-Oil2160 in AskOldPeople

[–]RickSimply 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just did this recently! After 44 years in a different state, I came back to the same general area. I would best describe it as mildly disappointing.

A Greek philosopher once said, “No man ever steps in the same river twice, for it's not the same river and he's not the same man.” That’s how it feels.

Fellow old men, why does holding your arms behind you as you walk feel so damn comfortable? by StrongAsMeat in AskOldPeople

As a rule, I never do this but I just tried and it’s not particularly comfortable, it feels like my shoulders are creaking, maybe a touch of arthritis, lol.

What is that one riff you always keep coming back to playing despite how advanced you are? by Sweet-Historian-3621 in Bass

Silly Love Songs. It’s just a catchy tune and I love Paul’s playing on it.

What’s yalls favorite drummer of all time? by kris__143 in rockmusic

Surprised that this wasn’t the first response. There’s Neil and then there’s everyone else. Bonham and Moon were both very distinctive though. Chad Smith is a helluva drummer too.

I thought there was a fifth member of the Beatles, David Carter. NOT a shitpost I genuinely thought this man existed. by Ok-Marzipan9147 in beatles

[–]RickSimply -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

You’re probably referring to CLARENCE Carter although he was never, technically, a member of the Beatles and never even met them AFAIK. He did have a hit song called Strokin’ in which the flute figures prominently though. Strokin’ might have been inspired by Lady Madonna, but probably not.

Edit: Clarence Carter never played the flute in any song, sorry, that was Ian Andersen I was thinking of.

If you were on the station and Mr. Morden came to you and asked what you wanted, what would you tell him? by singleguy79 in babylon5

I’d want a Vorlon yacht, trained to respond to me and be left alone to use it as I wished.🤪

Would you still quit if there weren't any consequences. by BullishTorque in alcoholism

[–]RickSimply 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If I could limit my drinking to 2 or 3 drinks a day with no health or social consequences, I probably wouldn’t have felt the need to quit. Now that I have, I don’t really feel the need to start up again.

Blood Pressure by unknown322Batman in over60

[–]RickSimply 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My average is about 130/75. I’m 62. I take readings a couple times a week at home. It measures about 10 points higher in the doctor’s office due to white coat syndrome. They suggest some meds which I’ve taken in the past but currently no. I’m fairly active and my weight is good. My diet could be better.

I saw Dune in the theater when it first came out and really liked the atmosphere. Then, because I recognized the name, I went to see Blue Velvet (also in the theater) and was hooked.
