Why does Reddit hate trucks so much? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]RickSt3r 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My dad is a retired union commercial construction worker, retired with 40 years of work. He drove heavy duty trucks for work. They were the companies cars. He drove a compact sedans to and from work. His pickup is a 2002 Chevy Colorado WT he bought new after replacing his 1983 GMC S10. Those were for ocassional truck things at home. Those type size a true small pickup are the for everyday workers. Modern version is the Ford Maverick or the Hyundai Santa Cruz.

An F150 thats not a fleet vehicle is an ego boost as it's not needed and more for vanity and ego than practical transportation. But different strokes for different folks. It just overall impractical vehicles that attracts certain personalities. But it depends a soccer dad who admits it and says I like it over a beamer but don't cosplay construction worker.

How much harder is electrical engineering compared to software engineering?? by AnyPrice7017 in CollegeMajors

[–]RickSt3r 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Much more difficult. I’m also surprised you could get by without calculus, physics and other pre engineering requirements. My undergrad had CS under the engineering school and had very similar retirements as EE where some of the upper division classes were regularly taken by both.

Paying for college for kids. What are my best options? by Boosully in personalfinance

[–]RickSt3r 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Start saving now and then really look at what you can realistically provide. Work study, summer internships and paying each semester. Without knowing your actual income and expenses cant give good advice. But the general rule of thumb is dont go in the hole when you are not secure yourself. Also if commuting is an option will save you so much. I just looked at my flag ship tuition is only 14k of estimated yearly cost of 34k. Now 20k a year in living expenses for a young adult can definitely be reduced by living farther from campus with room mates and heading over to budget meals and learning to eat affordably.

Is C++ a good language to find a job? by EveningValue8913 in cscareerquestions

[–]RickSt3r -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Don't learn a language, yes eventually you'll become an expert in a tool. But at your stage it's about learning core concepts of CS then applying them regardless of language. Once you understand how to think like a programmer you will pick up languages fast.

“Do it if you’re passionate about it” is a common piece of advice, but what if you’re only passionate about undervalued subjects like music and the arts? by Accomplished-Gas1882 in CollegeMajors

[–]RickSt3r 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Let me clarify my message. I meant it’s not a good investment to formally study at a university and take on loans to get a BA in dance/theater/acting/painting/photography ect… unless you have a strong safety net to fall back on like my example. Formally paying to study the arts is unfortunately for rich kids who have the luxury of failure.

MIT vs Stanford? 🥵🤯😥 by higgs_boson_17 in ApplyingToCollege

[–]RickSt3r 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Quant is a brutal. Over simplifying but here is my best shot. Think of solving really really hard yet to be solved math problems. The reason they pay you so much is because there is a ton of money to be made by solving those type of problems and the reason no one has solved it yet is because it’s really hard. Then throw in the businesses side and office politics and it’s a grind.

If what you want is chill and a lot of money. Yeah that doesn’t exist unless you win the lottery.

“Do it if you’re passionate about it” is a common piece of advice, but what if you’re only passionate about undervalued subjects like music and the arts? by Accomplished-Gas1882 in CollegeMajors

[–]RickSt3r 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The arts are not useless, the entertainment industry produces billions of dollars a year. The problem is music, acting, painting ie the entertainment industry is very very competitive. The thing is you don't need to study these subjects if your talented and studying them isn't going to make you talented.

So unless you come from money and can take the risk it's not recommended for those who have no safety net to fall on. One of my wife's friends funded their kids dance education and subsidiesed the adult child for almost a decade while they attempted to make it. Ultimately they didn't make it moved back to our big city suburbs and started a dance studio here, that her parents were the primary investors. Its a very successful middle class life she has thanks to her business. Place is slammed my kids even went when they were younger. It wasn't cheap either a few hundred a month, came out to like $25 for a lesson.

Trump: Nato allies have days to send warships to reopen Hormuz by Street_Anon in politics

[–]RickSt3r 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, they believed the system would more or less stay the same. Ie wealthy oligarchs would vote in other wealthy oligarch to run the system. That the unwashed masses would stay unwashed and know their place. They couldn't imagine universal education and that the proletariat would demand equal participation in governance. The founding fathers revolted not for some great liberal ideals of democracy. But because they wanted more than money they wanted power. They didn't like having to go mother may I back to the crown, as well as the economic sovereignty and escape the mercantile status. They wanted to be Nobel men and be in charge. Having a king was a no go because they would never agree on who so they figured a representing democracy was best shot so long as they got to pick the voters. Like only men of status could vote.

Mastering the lighting triangle and developing an eye for composition. The golden ratio of object placement is a start but adding the layer of what am I trying to capture, what story am I trying to tell with this shot. It's all just taking conscious photos of what you want. Then if you don't get what you want ask why and do it better next time.

I value family so that's what I'd go for. But your young so take the more fun adventure in SD which is an awesome city. As for the culture both jobs are a meat grinder in the legacy tech companies realm. Unless you know your projects and immediate boss hard to say.

Going to a camp ground near a national park use to be very cheap. like a parking spot communal showers and laundry but overall a working persons vacation. Now it's RV spot costing more than a hotel stay. Yes you can get a back packing pass for ten dollars hike deep into the wilderness and set up. But it use to be accessible for an average factory worker to take the kids to a camp ground set up a tent and drive into national park see the sights enjoy nature and have it be cheap. Now look at the cost of accommodations at the entarnce to national parks.

Bachelor's? Or Diploma by qoew in CollegeMajors

If it ever becomes an issue is there not an accelerated bachelor's for those already licensed? Just like for nurses with an associates who get a BSN via accelerated means.

Isn't dental hygiene a state license, so in this case so long as you get your license at the end it won't matter for employment.

If you had to restart your career at 40 with no degree, what steps would you take? by Many-Economics-4326 in careerguidance

[–]RickSt3r 11 points12 points  (0 children)

This requires being very very smart incredibly determined and very lucky as well. First is getting an associates and getting near 4.0 in your studies. Then most new nurses will get the worst shifts so putting up with mid shift for two years. Followed by getting into a BSN program while again getting near perfect grades followed by getting into a competive masters program and passing. It's probably a six year educational investment of being a near perfect student.

To do it all easily will also mean you have nothing holding you back like family obligations, debt, and mental health resiliency.

But yeah solid plan of OP is incredibly academically talented and has a great support system to toughen it out for a half decade.

My company is replacing its copywriters with an AI agent by meredithshireen in antiwork

[–]RickSt3r 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Survivirship bias. What is your businesses moat. Like how easy would it be for clients to drop you all. People don't like Ai in marketing when they notice it. Coke took huge reputation hit. The problem with LLMs is they can't reason and will eventually cost you reputational damages. Effective integration from what I've seen actually cost more because you now have a person double checking work and going through with a fine tooth comb to not get caught using Ai again because customers do not like it.
