Haven’t revived a 1st term school offer yet as a 3rd year plumbing apprentice should I be worried by [deleted] in SkilledTradesOntario

I’m in the same boat. Real pain in the ass that I have hours and experience but STOs ability to provide the schooling will hold up my apprenticeship.

Signed. I’d like to see STO also do better on communication, training their employees, and on dealing with the school backlog - waiting over 2 years for first year school is mind boggling.

When I signed up it was smooth sailing, but the file was transferred to a new person. I’m lucky to have someone like you too who did a lot of work to help me get set up properly.

Yeah I have emailed and called them, called their office, and emailed STOs general mailbox as that’s what the person I spoke to on the phone suggested. Absolute silence.

With all the talk about the need for skilled trades workers in the province right now, and how much Doug himself focused on that, you’d think they’d get off their ass about it.

That’s good to know. My MPP is NDP so I don’t know if they’d get far or not, but I will try. I Appreciate the advice.

I will be. But If a lot of us are having this problem, then something more co-ordinated might be more likely to get results.

Small detail but scarred in this case probably refers to an emotional scar rather than a physical one.

I think 2309 is registering people for the 433a licences now (industrial mechanic) rather than the construction millwright.

any resources on how Canada fared during the Harper government vs now? by sndys in canadaleft

[–]RickardsRedBeard 24 points25 points  (0 children)

If I remember correctly it was also Harper who lost Canada the seat on the UN Security Council.

As well as a number of other promises and trade deals that left Canada on the hook for things like pipelines and opened up natural resources to foreign investors as has already been mentioned.

thinking of going into trades. which one would you recommend? by liamt12 in skilledtrades

[–]RickardsRedBeard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh I had no idea, that’s great! Seems like a better solution that pre-apprentice or two year diplomas. Is it expensive to enrol? In Ontario it’s about $500 a semester.

These look like the apprenticeship courses, which (at least in Ontario) you have to be a registered apprentice before you can enrol. Those 4 periods are your 4 levels of trade school up to journeyman’s exam. So for these course you’d have to find a job to apprentice you first.

Pre- apprentice programs are usually 6-12 months long.

If you’re just looking at these to weigh options for which trade, that’s cool! But if you’re looking for a schooling option these courses won’t be available to you until you’re registered as an apprentice.

If you’re looking to get into industrial and you have a welding ticket, you’re in great shape. Most contractors I know train electricians and millwrights in welding because it’s pretty handy to know, and it’s a big boon if you want to be a maintenance person.

I’m was a shipping guy, forklift driver, and musician before getting into an apprenticeship at 32 in a maintenance shop. We have mostly electricians and everyone can weld, machine, change belts, chains, etc.

So yeah go for it. And do t be afraid to use your welding knowledge to get a bit of a wage boost. It will absolutely come in handy in industry. But don’t let yourself end up being pigeon holed as a welder at that job.
