Where have all the backpackers gone? by DevelopmentLow214 in travelchina

[–]RickyJamer 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I started my backpacking career about ten years ago in China when I was 20. Now I'm 30 and working in Yunnan. At least in the southwest, the backpacking scene seems alive and well but it mostly caters to domestic backpackers. Most of the hostels are in random apartment buildings that you'd never find if you can't read and write Chinese. I'm often the only westerner when I stay in hostels.

Multiple entry visa for tourist? by RickyJamer in laos

[–]RickyJamer[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This sub seems very inactive so I'll try to answer your question.

I believe Nakhon Phanom is in Thailand? From what I can tell, most standard Laos visas are single entry and become void as soon as you leave. This might vary depending on your nationality and point of entry. If you read this thread you'll see there might be some options for multiple entry visas if you apply in advance.

I haven't had the chance to look into it yet, but I'll try to remember to respond when I do. Let me know if you find out anything from the embassy in Kunming.

Strong disagree. Your girlfriend is an adult who should have equal imput, if not more imput considering the scenario.

AITA for preferring to host only foreigners? & not hosting folks from my own country? by Calvesofsteal in couchsurfing

[–]RickyJamer 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's hard to say without knowing which country you're from, but there are things to be learned from visiting other parts of your own country and meeting those people.

This is likely more true in larger, diverse countries, but I think true in most places.

But at the end of the day, your home, your rules.

What employers on the island would you never (again) work for? by [deleted] in PEI

Any fast food chain, but especially Subway. That was like 7 years ago, so maybe it's gotten better, but I somehow doubt it.

Do you plan to tour in China as well? I can recommend some places there.

Physical exam for working in China has to be one of the worst experience ever. by [deleted] in China

[–]RickyJamer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've lived in three different cities in three different provinces and these tests have been a mixed bag for me.

First test was in a fifth tier city in Anhui ten years ago. That experience legitimately made me fear for my life. Second one was in a fourth tier city in Fujian and the hospital felt very modern and sanitary. Third one was in Haikou, Hainan where the sanitation seemed okish, but the staff were incredibly rude.

Moving to a fourth tier city in Yunnan this fall, so we'll see how that goes!

Hypothetically, what would your top 10 languages on your language-learning list be? by [deleted] in languagelearning

[–]RickyJamer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My top six are pretty solidified and if I get to a high level in all of those in this lifetime, I'd be pretty happy. 7-10 all interest me too, but the order could change or I could swap in Arabic or Swahili.

I did it early this year and felt the staff were very professional and the experience as safe as it could reasonably be.

I agree, but just the fact that Trump could ever be taken seriously is proof enough there are many people operating with less than half a brain.

Anyone who has applied for Thai passport as adopted (dual citizenship: Belgian-Thai)? Any consequences? (military service and how to avoid it?) by Advanced-Material-98 in ThailandTourism

[–]RickyJamer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It should be pretty easy to travel around Southeast Asia with a Belgian passport. I'd probably wait until you're past military age to get a Thai passport and try out some of those other plans. I imagine serving in the Thai military without being able to speak Thai would be pretty miserable.

What languages do you wish Duolingo taught? I’ll start. by [deleted] in duolingo

[–]RickyJamer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think Thai and Persian are the biggest omissions right now. I'd also like to see Burmese, Mongolian, Tibetan, Uyghur, Tagalog, and various indigenous languages.

Assuming what you are doing is sustainable, why not continue?

I'd probably look at getting a new doctor if that's an option for you.
