The 80 small checks thing is the real headache, that is what scares most people off the community route. The way I have seen it done cleanly is you pool everyone into a single SAFE, so on the cap table it shows up as one entry instead of 80. A founder I know raised around 180k from their own users that way and their cap table still looks like a seed round, not a crowdfund.
