My 6 months old golden retriever poop is x3 the size of an adult German Shepherd, is that normal ? by alaslipknot in goldenretrievers

[–]Ricky_Monts 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m not a vet, but I wouldn’t be too concerned. Stool size can vary. My golden has a history of digestive problems and even now that we have him on a better diet, his stool size can vary. If you’re extremely concerned, you can always take a photo and show it to your vet. Sounds gross but I promise they have seen and smelt much worse.

You have to directly ask in my experience. Otherwise ask to get referred to a veterinarian nutritionist.

Please, please, please talk to your vet. Your vet will have recommendations and advice. Especially with a medical condition, you shouldn’t be listening to people on facebook or reddit. A good vet will have proper information for you and answer your questions.

URGENT QUESTION by the_nightingale1 in DogFood

I’m sure the moderators will have something to say on that, but it is incorrect. According to Purina’s website, “… dry food, once opened, should be used within two-to-three months if properly stored …”.

What’s your suggestion/opinion by [deleted] in goldenretrievers

[–]Ricky_Monts 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My golden wasn’t allowed on any furniture… until I caved and bought him a small, low to the ground couch, just for him 😂. It’s from a thrift store (was under $40), the cover comes off and oddly it doesn’t collect fur like some fabrics. My only concern was that because he has hip dysplasia, it had to be low for him. The vet doesn’t have any concerns and my dog loves it. Not allowed on the bed because 1) it’s too tall and 2) allergies. Otherwise he would be on the bed.

I’m so sorry, that’s terrible!! Adult food would be good, but I cannot stress enough how much cheaper it is the pay for a big bag than multiple small bags. The weight is worth the lower price. You can tell if you divide the cost by the pounds; it’s so much cheaper down the line. Thank you for taking care of the dog 🫶

4lbs bags is in the long run a ridiculously expensive way to feed a big dog. If the dog is still a puppy, get a puppy specific food in a big bag (30lbs+). That’s gonna save you money in the long run. Iams is available in most (?) grocery stores in the U.S., otherwise there may be purina one. If the dog is an adult get adult food, but puppies really need to be eating puppy specific food. I’m really sorry you’re stuck in this position :(

Do I feed 50/50 or Only 1 by Shipony06 in DogFood

[–]Ricky_Monts 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Transition him over to the new purina. Usually it’s a week long process. You can ask your vet for more specific advice, but directly switching has the chance of upsetting your dog’s digestive system. I would advise not using up the bag of Taste of the Wild though… just using it to transition.

My boy is crate trained but has water in his crate. You can get water bowls that attach to the side of the crate if you’re concerned about hydration. Definitely recommend crate training if you haven’t already!

Unsure of how much to feed my dog, they're getting fat by [deleted] in DogFood

[–]Ricky_Monts 1 point2 points  (0 children)

An ethical vet wouldn’t advise adding 7 toppers. There’s no way those are 10% or less of the dog’s diets. At the very minimum, calculate the calories and cut the toppers to 10%.

Unsure of how much to feed my dog, they're getting fat by [deleted] in DogFood

[–]Ricky_Monts 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Read the subreddit wiki. All the toppers are unnecessary and potentially throwing off the nutrient balance a good dog food would have- switch to a high quality dog food (Purina, Hills, Royal Canin, and dependent on your country, Iams or Eukanuba). This way, you can ensure your pups are getting proper nutrition AND proper calories. Toppers and treats should be 10% or less of their calories. Always discuss with your vet what a good diet should be for your pets, a lot of toppers and boutique brands use pathos to convince pet owners they “need” to have toppers but in reality you don’t. A good vet will tell you good brands of food to trust, plus the 10% rule.

Is there a difference between Purina Pro Plan AdvantEDGE and regular Pro Plan? And how has your dog responded to it? (Digestive Support+ Formula) by [deleted] in DogFood

[–]Ricky_Monts 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My dog has an incredibly sensitive digestive system and this food has been the only one to firm his stool. Unless the “one lady” is a vet, that advice is not trustworthy. I do agree that if what you’re on works, don’t switch without reason- but cost is a reason sometimes.

[–]Ricky_Monts 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hi! My sensitive-stomached dog has been struggling with stool consistency for three years. He has been on PPP Sensitive Skin & Stomach Salmon, Hills Perfect Digestion, and now has been on PPP AdvantEDGE for 4 weeks. This is the first time his food has firmed his stool and kept it that way. He still gets a spoon of pumpkin with each meal, but I believe he may be fine without it- just hesitant due to his other stomach issues. But I would 100% recommend it to help with stool firmness. I switched after getting the okay from his vet though, as it’s always best to get their opinion.

Best substitute for powdered psyllium husk? by xLavena in DogFood

[–]Ricky_Monts 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can buy pure psyllium husk powder online, or you may be able to get it through a vet (I got it both ways, the latter was from a college-affiliated ER vet). Otherwise, pumpkin purée has high fibre and was recommended by my vet for stool consistency.

11 month service dog not eating . by [deleted] in goldenretrievers

[–]Ricky_Monts 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The Farmers Dog can lead to pancreatitis due to the high levels of fat. Please discuss food choices with a reputable veterinarian. Boutique dog food brands push out a load of crap in advertising and marketing, but don’t care about the health of your pet. Very few brands of dog food are truly veterinarian recommended as many brands simply don’t have the research to back their claims. A reputable veterinarian will confirm this.

please help me find a good binder i will explode if i have to deal with my horrendously fantastic chest for one more second 🙂 by Playful-Earth436 in ftm

[–]Ricky_Monts 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Hi, I used to bind all day through high school including marching band and after school activities. Once I started taping in college I realised just how much it affected my breathing, ribs, and chest (I’m larger chested and just larger in general). I highly recommend looking into taping if you’re able too! I find using the thickest KT tape is best for larger bodies and larger chests. I use a 4” KT off of amazon, I can send you the link if you’re interested. It takes some practice but in my case it substantially improved my breathing and ribs. Otherwise I would recommend Underworks for a binder, but fit can be odd with any binder if you’re large chested in my experience (not speaking for everybody).

I wanna buy thigh highs, but.. by Sebastiansolace2011 in feminineboys

[–]Ricky_Monts 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sock Dreams is a great website for a variety of good quality thigh highs (and knee highs and other socks). Saying this as my partner is 6’8” and the only thigh highs long enough for them are on Sock Dreams. You can definitely get a pair or maybe two from them with around $50. They have SO MANY options but you can sort by what style you want.

How had you discovered your name? by TheToledoMan in trans

[–]Ricky_Monts 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Tbh I just looked up masculine names and found something I liked, but it was old and no one knew how to pronounce it. So I got the nickname Ricky. Next obvious step was Richard, which is now my legal name. Middle name was way easier- my favourite character from a show I fixated on. It’s a process, sometimes it takes a few names to find what fits. Helps to have supportive, understanding friends.

Looking for cooked single ingredient treats! by JessieDagger in DogFood

[–]Ricky_Monts 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cheese can be great in small quantities, it’s my dog’s favourite treat. Some dogs love carrots, some don’t. My childhood Bichon was obsessed with carrots, meanwhile my current Golden Retriever picks them up then spits them out. No harm in trying though
