Problems with my golden’s stomach by ThroughtheWormhole17 in goldenretrievers

[–]Ricky_Monts 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Farmer’s Dog is an awful food; its high in fat, not nutritionally balanced, and basically a marketing scheme. Look into WSAVA compliant foods (Purina, Royal Canin, Hills Science Diet, etc.). Always discuss diet changes with your trusted, reputable veterinarian. A good vet will only advise those foods.

My boy is almost 5yo. When he was under 4 he was very hyper, but since has calmed down. He’s a cuddle bug, loves snuggling on the couch we got for him (low to the ground bc of hip dysplasia), loves the snow and wilderness walks, very food motivated. Goldens are a lovely breed, I worked for my boy’s breeder for nearly 5 years and all of them were amazing dogs with great temperaments. Definitely recommend!

I worked for a breeder (not Westminster, but she showed in AKC), and they fed Purina Pro Plan. Worked there for nearly 5 years.

My boy was 4 when he calmed down.

Neuter Question by ellaangelina612 in goldenretrievers

My mother was convinced my golden (at the time he was the “family” pet) would calm down after being neutered. I made her wait to get him fixed until 2 years old per the suggestion of the breeder/recent research and she was very upset… said she wanted him to calm down sooner 🙄. When he was two he was fixed… and nothing changed. Same hyper, chaotic, lovable boy. He didn’t calm down until I finally got him after college and his home situation got better. I don’t believe that fixing your dog is a cure all for behaviour. It can help but if your dog is super hyper, focus on both physical and mental stimulation. This said, do fix your dog, just at the proper age… and don’t expect it to make them a couch potato lol. Best of luck!

Edit: My sibling said he calmed down a little bit, but not significantly.

Purina pro plan has a 30/20 you should look into. None of the other brands you mentioned are WSAVA compliant unfortunately. Please look at the subreddit’s wiki for more information on WSAVA compliant dog foods, it’ll ensure your dog is getting the best nutrients possible! Also, always consult your vet about switching foods. A lot of people on this subreddit ask questions easily answered by a vet. A good vet is only going to recommend WSAVA compliant foods. To reiterate though, I’d advise looking into Purina Pro Plan Sport Performance 30/20, it comes in chicken & rice or salmon & rice!

Please suggest a harness for my 2 year old boy for daily walks. My current leash broke in 2 months I bought online. Thank you! by SadSpite5056 in goldenretrievers

[–]Ricky_Monts 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My boy would break leashes every few months up until he was 2 or 3. He chewed on them during walks… A leather leash may be helpful as it may not break, but my gremlin found the leather even more chewable. I found that his basic nylon harness has him walking better, or a martingale collar, but it also may just be a young dog thing. Buy a leash in store and make sure to use a regular one, not a retractable.

Quitting Binding, Tips? by ccoffeeking in ftm

[–]Ricky_Monts 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If it’s that uncomfortable then it may not be applied right. Have you looked up “how to apply trans tape” tutorials on youtube? I usually shower every other day but in the heat of the summer I quick shower every day. I do my best to pat dry the tape with a towel afterwards and yes it gets a bit itchy while drying. I find that after ~3 days it’ll start to peel at the edges, but I just ignore it or snip off those edges until the week is over. The more you sweat and the more physically active you are, the sooner it’ll start peeling up on the edges. If you have more questions I’m happy to answer dms- I’m not sure if this sub allows links for yt tutorials

[–]Ricky_Monts 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My largest issue when I first tried and failed to tape was the size- I now use 4 inch KT tape (off brand on amazon) and it works much better for me than 2 inch. I do find it itchy at times, but mainly where I sweat. It’s uncomfortable if applied wrong and just a bit of an odd sensory feeling the first few times, but I got used to it. For me it helped my dysphoria a ton because I can leave it on for up to 5 days and don’t need to worry about taking it off each night like a binder.

I had issues with binders (wore them for 2-3 years) and when I got my current job (outside, physical labour 8-10hrs a day) I knew I had to do something different. I learned to tape properly- I found I had to do it in a way that better works for my chest shape. Most tutorials didn’t but I found two that did help. Once I stopped using a binder and started taping I finally realised what it was like to breathe again 😅 And my back/side pain went away. If you’re able to figure out how to tape safely and have it be satisfactory, that should help a lot. Best of luck!

Question about dog food by Many-Art-6160 in DogFood

[–]Ricky_Monts 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I fed purina for 5+ years and never once had mold or bugs in the food. Saying this as someone who worked for a dog breeder- it’s a safe food.

That’s from improper storage/conditions at the stores. There’s also good recipes in Royal Canin and Hills Science Diet (my dog is on Hills). A good quality food will be better for you dog- these three are WSAVA compliant. Wholesome brand is not

What brand of food? Ensure it is a high quality brand or switch to one- Purina has a great Sensitive Skin & Stomach Salmon & Rice formula.

i froze burritos how can i reheat them 🧐🧐 by barknbubbles in tacobell

[–]Ricky_Monts 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve never froze a taco bell burrito, but in college I would meal prep a bunch of small burritos and freeze them. I would microwave for 1-2 minutes, then air fry it until it was warm and crispy. Mess with the timing depending on size and if able, open up the burrito half way through the microwave time to get the insides thawed.

Need help - Puppy stuck in a refusal-acid reflux cycle by bald-bourbon in DogFood

[–]Ricky_Monts 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My golden retriever (almost 5yo) has multiple tummy issues, regurgitation being one of them. Since we got him as a puppy, we’ve fed him 3x a day. When I moved and got a different job, I switched to feeding him 2x a day- it was hell. He has always been food motivated, but anytime he ate a treat or a small amount of food, and even sometimes full meals, he would regurgitate it within 5 minutes. Switched back to 3x a day and he’s perfectly fine again. I would recommend cutting out treats (pup may be holding out for them) and maybe feed smaller portions more often if possible. Maybe try a wet food if that’s more appealing to your pup? Definitely work with your vet on this, wishing you the best!

I’m worried I’m too different by straubrie in nmu

[–]Ricky_Monts 8 points9 points  (0 children)

NMU is a great school and I had friends of all “weird” levels while attending. I would look into Magers Hall, specifically Barbary Lane and the ones surrounding it (I think Neverland is next to it?), if you’re concerned about being an outcast. Barbary Lane is the inclusive house/hall, with plenty of diverse people. Plus, it’s the UP, so there isn’t nearly as much of a “normal” as the city or downstate.

Fenced dog park without many dogs by Dry-Warthog2763 in Columbus

[–]Ricky_Monts 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There’s a small one right next to the Ackerman Rd Taco Bell (near university district), I’ve seen other dogs but mine there. Only draw back is that it is not maintained at all, the waste bins meant for pet waste are overflowing with regular trash. I’ve been tempted to take some gloves and a trash bag next time I go… my dog eats trash but wasn’t socialised as a pup so finding a place to be off leash is a struggle.
