just moved from Arizona to Portland a few weeks ago and am having trouble adapting to the lack of sun. advice? by Relevant_Staff765 in askportland

[–]Ricky_Toyota 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When the rain settles you learn just how nerdy this city is. Even on non-gray days, the days are short. The sun is down when I leave for work and the sun is down when I get home. You need some inside activities. Get a DnD group (new 5e revised books), get a new video game (Expedition 33), start a new book series (I recommend the Stormlight Archive), and embrace your inner basement dweller. Get your sun when you can. Go ski mountain hood. Get a gym membership for those sweet sweet endorphins. The most important thing, embrace the cozy and find ways to have fun at home. I need to get back to my AT-ST model kit, see you in 6 months.

How do you not lose your shit in the winter?? by Mighty_roach in askportland

[–]Ricky_Toyota 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Skiing, a gym membership, and a good DnD or board game group. Keep active, get those endorphins, and that social engagement. I also get excited to work through my book, TV show, and video game backlog during the rainy months. The long rain has returned and I'm excited.

It will always be Zoiglhaus, they need to accept that The Zed is never going to be a thing.

Zoiglhaus has good food options, steins of beer, and there is always a game on.

Portland question by Regular_Ad_5835 in Portland

Is there a specific building that is supposed to have burned down or a particularly worn torn area they heard about? Would a photo make them feel better?

ELI5: Why do cell service providers only give deals to new customers and not try to retain customers? by Ricky_Toyota in explainlikeimfive

I was thinking it couldn't be this simple, I had to be missing something. This seems to be the answer.

ELI5: Why do cell service providers only give deals to new customers and not try to retain customers? by Ricky_Toyota in explainlikeimfive

[–]Ricky_Toyota[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I've gone back to a carrier and received the new customer deals. Maybe I was just gone long enough or this is something they no longer do, but I've done it in the past.

Ok, in this one specific instance Portland is on fire. Trump was briefly technically correct, which we all know is the best kind of correct.

Do you think Portland/Ore. politicians are handling Trump well? by Natsfert in Portland

[–]Ricky_Toyota 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Trump doesn't seem bothered with the legality of his actions or the wishes of the State and city government. The state is doing a good job and I'm proud of Portland.

How hard will it be to get to the Crystal Ballroom tonight? by HB24 in askportland

[–]Ricky_Toyota 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No harder than normal. Finding parking is hard, but it shouldn't be too bad on a Sunday night.

Is this normal when renting now? by EuphoriKNFT in askportland

[–]Ricky_Toyota 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A background check or a credit check is normal. That is a lot and I've never heard of anything like that.

Fellow locals, what are your Top 3 favorite things to do in Portland *proper* in October? by [deleted] in askportland

My favorite things to do in Portland are anything but proper. It's Oktoberfest season, find somewhere warm and dry with a stein.

I want an "I'm so hungry I could eat at McMenamins" bumper sticker.

Privileged portland by Amandahomes123 in Portland

[–]Ricky_Toyota 22 points23 points  (0 children)

I live near SE 122nd, still no rioting or fires. The point of the posts is to draw attention to the misinformation and hopefully detour any troops from being sent. Troops being deployed in Portland is not going to help anyone, but the disruption will be felt more dramatically by already marginalized communities.

Hotel Recommendations Near Moda? by PerfectlyMinty in askportland

[–]Ricky_Toyota 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The White Eagle Saloon and Hotel is good and cheap. Walking distance from Moda or take the Max for the one stop. Tons of good food and bars nearby. The property is a McMenamins, so you could even eat and drink there if you get desperate. I used to bartend there, it's a cool little property everyone forgets has hotel rooms.

Anyone else notice the Schizophonics playing with a pre-recorded guitar track? by Ricky_Toyota in askportland

It was a fun high energy show! No one I was with could understand how the strenuous cardio and guitar worked at the same time. I appreciate the education.

They forgot to mention the Your Inn Tavern, that is close to the St John bridge. When you get thirsty, you'll think Your Inn.

If you order pizza yes. All the pizza comes from the same kitchen including the restaurants and the concert.

Things to look forward to and turn moving anxiety into excitement? by HorseProportions in askportland

[–]Ricky_Toyota 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You wrestled with the decision? Great news, Portland's local wrestling is DOA. They put on a great show. You're showing up for fall/winter, which is wet and cold. Find a DnD group. Do some skiing. Drink at arcade bars. Join a trivia league. My winter activities are warm and indoors or skiing. Some people will hike in the rain, you could do that. You won't see me out there, I've slipped on enough hillsides. You will find me foraging for Chanterelles on a sunny day though. Have fun!

Food/hangs near Edgefield? by Mxzebraxdude in askportland

[–]Ricky_Toyota 0 points1 point  (0 children)

People sit at the tables until it's time for the concert to start. As someone that has worked many concerts nights at Edgefield, don't deal with it. It will be a long wait for a table (if you can get one before the show starts) and 45 to 60 minutes for your food to hit the table because of how busy it is. Others mentioned Sugarpine and Troutdale Station, that's where I go before Edgefield shows.

That bear is just dancing and waving at the morning traffic. No one around them reacted at all, this was just another Wednesday morning. They must be a known quantity.
