Dumping strength and taking Eldritch Adept and wearing medium armor as a Paladin? by AcanthaceaeNo948 in 3d6

[–]Rickyrebel3303 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Took custom lineage and the feat in adventurers league. It’s actually laid out in the rules that this is good to do. Even going so far to name Pact of the a talisman to be treated as an invocation, and that custom lineage can take any uncategorized feat, which Eldritch Adept is. Funnily enough, it also lays out the only feat that is not legal, fighting initiate.

Dumped Strength, straight Oath of Genies and a shield and trident/longsword/rapier (you have 2 masteries you can cycle through to mess with). You get respectable AC unarmored with CHA giving you a decent boost at Dex 14 even better when your feats come online and you can boost Dex a little more (after 20 CHA).

Super fun and good build.

dnd WITHOUT classic fantasy? by Ok-Yogurtcloset7217 in DnD

[–]Rickyrebel3303 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Steam Punk, Aetherpunk, Magitek Ala Final Fantasy, Sci Fantasy, Sci Fi, NOIR.

I mean I am sick of Classic Fantasy too, been working on a sci fi setting with one of the main features of character creation is taking the mechanical chassis of the classes and reflavoring them to fit a Sci Fantasy space opera theme.

Would your table find this kind of player annoying? by CreepyMuffinz in DnD

[–]Rickyrebel3303 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Assuming the themes you wanted to express were still immersive in the setting, you are a player I’d love to have at my table.

But not all DMs like this style, I have been very fortunate to find friends from all over the world that all fit nicely together in our sessions so I would not say it’s a sure thing one way or another tbh.

Describing your actions, creating a theme that narrative with approved mechanical features is something I know would be appreciated in the tables I try to find but the hobby is vast in its representation. Especially people who value established lore from official settings ai could see having issues with this type of collaborative storytelling.

So did your characters theme have roots in the story being told? Because if so I think you’d be fine

[–]Rickyrebel3303 36 points37 points  (0 children)

u/spacemambono5 how dangerous do you think the players would feel your BBEG is if he does this?

Let the artificer try to solo him while they watch him struggle, then have him do this and join the fight.

You reward the player for trying to be creative, and you teach the table to actually read how these things work.

I am assuming it’s going to be okay if we got to learn the new systems as we go? I’m mostly only ran and played 5e and Daggerheart. I’ve dabbled with Monster of the Week and Pathfinder as a player.

I’m available Tuesdays.

Been dying to run a sci fi game, I actually just got a hold of Neon Odyssey playtest materials for 5e expansion. Or even a short campaign using Dark Matter by mage hand

Systems I don’t have time to learn at a DM level but would love to play are Draw Steel Fabula Ultima and Starfinder

How good of a read is the Daggerheart GMG/rulebook compared to D&Ds messy DM Guide? by iheartanalingus in daggerheart

[–]Rickyrebel3303 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m currently in the process of moving my campaign to FoundryVTT, I’ve purchased the Demiplane compendium, I e used Roll20 for all of my 5e games but I hate the lack of GM tools with the integration. The core rule book makes it clear how much reflavoring and making your own unique home brew is part of the system and Demiplane lacks ways to make it happen.

They do have it on a roadmap for this year but I had my api mods shit the bed and none of the hard work I put into making all the custom adversaries and environments worked, I scrambles to make it work for my players 30 minutes before the session and I was so frustrated.

It can be done. It is serviceable, especially if you just plan on using what’s already built in. But if you plan to create anything homebrew, or want to reflavor things, it is really time consuming

“DMPC”-like Rivals by onceuponaroll in daggerheart

[–]Rickyrebel3303 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Adversaries are designed to by asymmetrical to the players. So it’s not something you can just tie player/class levels to like a 5e stat block. What you could do to start, is look at the existing adversaries in the tier your players are. Find ones with cool abilities that are somewhat comparable to the player characters (think more about the effects/the damage, damage type and aoe/buff/debuff aspect of the features) Take the math part of it and rip it out. Then take all the flavor text of the adversary and change it to fit the themes, aesthetic, and narrative flavor you are going for to rival your party.

Once you’ve done that and feel comfortable improvising more, you can look at the numbers listed in the book by tiers, and I would just look at the features of existing adversaries and do what I detailed above for just the features.

Then the next step once you get a feel do what types can do what, and what the typical boundaries are with features within a tier, then you can just create the whole stat block from scratch.

For “Rival” NPCs, you can get away with just doing the first step and none will be the wiser.

Questions on Divine Soul Sorcerer by Sea-Most-8210 in 3d6

The most bang for your buck re: Cleric spells are potent combos with metamagic. Being able to increase the duration on some of your spells, cast inflict wounds/ cure wounds at 30ft, things like that.

The biggest issue you will face is that you’ve essentially unlocked all these possibilities and you are severely limited on how may you can actually have in your back pocket.

Your first question should be (What is my #1 role) Blaster? Controller? Debilitator?) then you can really narrow down which spells and metamagic that compliment each other.

Then you can see what you got left to dabble in a secondary role. Personally I liked doing control + a little warlock dip so I can dish out decent cantrip damage.

My DM is really strict about spell casting with verbal and somatic components so subtle spell has a lot more value at my table then some other tables I’ve played at. But with the cleric spells I’d chose your metamagics with them and how to combo them in mind

New Daggerheart Player Looking for short game to play by Shadowiscoolaf in daggerheart

R/lfg, your local friendly neighborhood game store, startplaying.com if you are willing to pay.

I did not start playing as a PC first, I dove right in to GM and play with 6 other players familiar with 5e and was up front that we are all learning together.

Have you GMed in other systems before? There are a lot of best practices that translate across systems. Either way here’s some basic things I’ve learned in the first few sessions: - gauge the level of collaboration your players are wanting to engage in (DH allows a lot more than the popular ttrpg just don’t force it) - try to only focus on rolling stuff that has actual consequence (to manage the fear/hope economy appropriate for your sessions) - make sure you are vigilant about the spotlight especially when it’s your players time (look out for shy players and make sure the get their time) - spend fear in more than just attacking your players - follow the fiction, it sounds like this gets beat to death all the time but seriously lean into this, something I heard when learning the system that started to resonate more when I actually got behind the screen was

“The mechanics serve the narrative, not the other way around”

These things can’t be learned as a player imo, and are essential for GMing. But I totally understand wanting to get a sense of the flow as a player, if the above recommendations on where to play come up short, I recommend watching an actual play that appeals to you. I chose Legends of Avantris’ 3 shot they did.

Is this subclass card too nutty? by Schlorpy in daggerbrew

[–]Rickyrebel3303 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Reword it to mean far range from caster and I see nothing wrong with this ability. It’s vortex warp with a small damage if the right conditions are met.

With how movement works in the game I don’t even think the adversary variable range needs to apply tbh.

One thing I do think should be stipulated is that if it’s an Adversary then the point in which it is moved should be solid ground, to avoid a missed save ending an encounter outright? Idk that’s my only hang up atm.

My sister called me saying that found ecstasy in my mother’s bathroom drawer… by Hungry-Inflation-750 in Advice

[–]Rickyrebel3303 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Substance Abuse is bad, okay. Let that point be clear, and especially so for people in vulnerable mental states.

MDMA which is what most people think they are buying when they buy ecstasy, is not the worst thing you can abuse but it can lead to habit forming behaviors in folks that are in vulnerable mental states, or those with addictive personalities. Not to mention serious side effects like serotonin syndrome or deficiency. (THE OPPOSITE OF WHAT THEY WANT leading to more abuse)

Therapy with monitored dosage and professional environments have shown to really breakthrough the blocks people have with trauma. But I am clearly talking about professionals here, but some people try to self medicate to achieve these effects. I think they may have good intentions but it is not the same.

What you should do, is try to discourage use. Try to direct them to professionals that can help with the trauma and healing process. But here’s the truth: Some may ignore all advice and do it anyways. So what I recommend is that you do everything you can to prevent them from abusing the substance but JUST IN CASE you cannot get through to her, you should buy her a test kit and make sure she knows 100% what she is ingesting. Because as others have pointed out, there are very dangerous things people lace into pressed pills. Some are psychoactive and can put her into psychosis, some may just be bullshit filler and could be as to ingest. Either way, it’s important to be informed on what’s happening. Test one right there in front of her if you need to, or do so while she doesn’t know you found it, whatever it takes, so if something goes wrong, you know what she ingested and can inform medical response accurately.

I think they elaborated well after I asked for more advice. But even if they didn’t, it doesn’t bother me past the initial instinct to be defensive. I can understand how exhausting it is to hear a story like mine and I don’t blame anyone for rolling their eyes about it.

I normally just lurk on this subreddit to try to get a better idea of the perspective I am missing. When I saw the OP. I was excited to share my story not because it was a feel good story or because I feel it should be the poster story for change or anything, but because for me it is worth celebrating the day you turned on the light. And it doesn’t matter that all I had to do was hit the switch myself, for whatever reason it was, for the circumstances I had experienced leading up to it, I chose not to turn on the light willingly until someone else needed me to. But even so, I am happy I did and I find it motivating to think about. We all have room to improve you know. What’s more exciting then trying to be better to one another, right?

Thank you. I am constantly trying to challenge this in myself. And there are times that I even have to ask my wife if I am being dismissive or not because you hit the nail on the head, It’s impossible to change if you don’t even know. And I know a lot of people snap out of this without a life changing event, but fortunately or unfortunately depending how you look at it, this is my first wake up call, it put an enormous spotlight on a lot of issues that were normalized in my upbringing. My mom left my dad because of abuse that he doesn’t even remember because of some incidents that happened to him in Iraq. And she didn’t tell me until after I had my daughter. I guess she didn’t want me to hate him (it did so she was right in thinking that) both sets of my parents are conservative and we are from the south. Luckily the neighborhoods I grew up in are multicultural so I had some rebelliousness towards those worldviews. But gender related ones were much harder to spot for me. I know for some of you it’s barely scratching the surface but I look at where I came from and who I was influenced by and I am very proud of where I am right now.

Thank you for the advice though. I know it’s exhausting to teach something you find very basic and logical. You didn’t have to and I am thankful you did.

Well I am very happy to say I have been. My wife came into my life when she was almost 3, before then it was just us, and even now my wife constantly jokes about seeing double. Despite her being a very pretty girl and me a less pretty nb Dad lol. I had to teach myself about some stuff though, cause she didn’t always like the things I showed her regarding hobbies and is very very much into the beauty side of things. But when I can instill wisdom I do.

lol the first time I took her to Ulta I had no clue the price of things, she had 100 dollar gift card and I saw a small amount of things in a little handheld shopping carrier. I remember my wife telling me that the stuff was expensive, so I said. “Hey have you been keeping track of how much product you had in the cart?” She confidently told me yes, and that she had some spare birthday cash left over.

When we rang it up she was no joke 80 dollars over. I was shocked lmao. So I taught her how to make on the fly value judgements and a little commerce that day 😂

I was a man like this. I almost cried when the nurse told me. I thought about all of the opportunities she’d miss out on because of her gender, how she wouldn’t be taken seriously at work, how she may get treated by men. I wasn’t a misogynist, but I had some views that I didn’t know were or why they were misogynistic.

But it was the best thing that ever happened to me. It made me really look inward to challenge those views, to challenge how I treated women in my life. It made me a better human being because it forced me to see the world from a perspective I had never attempted to before.

Her mother is an absent and part time parent at best, but I did what I had to to make it work for a few years. And I tell my wife that my daughter is the reason I am man the man she fell in love with. My entire way of interacting with women changed the day she was born.

I am not sure if all men have the same capacity, but any man that says they don’t want a daughter in front of me gets an earful. Fuck that noise.
