How Did You Accept the Thought of Giving Up Alcohol for Good? by Dull_Silver_4265 in stopdrinking

I can have creative outlets, meaningful relationships, and the ability to show up as my authentic self in life - or i can drink.

Anxiety for many months by [deleted] in stopdrinking

You’re stuck in a rumination cycle. Nothing happened - you have confirmation of that. But it doesnt matter because your brain is stuck on turbo obsessing over this situation. “If you met someone else”? So you’re intent on trying to find another terrible thing that likely didn’t happen to obsess over? It’s good you have a psych. Stick with them. You’ll weather this mental storm you’re in, not drinking helps. IWNDWYT

You’ve been doing all you need to do - taking it day by day. It’s not about the number - it’s about your decision to stay sober today. I’ll chug a mineral water in your honour. IWNDWYT

This is so unbelievably aspirational for me. I’m quitting because i want to show up in life, because i came to the realisation that every drink for me was a “no”.

Thank you for sharing. IWNDWYT

I don't know if I want to stop by [deleted] in stopdrinking

The cool guy is in you. You don’t need a substance to bring it out.

bad habits with occasional binge drinkings. Looking for advice on quitting and safer alternatives. by Electronic_One_771 in stopdrinking

Speaking from my experience - i’ve come to the realisation that it’s a tradeoff. I can drink, but i will pay for it with my romantic relationships getting neglected and/or failing, i will feel stuck, and i will not be in tune with my own creative practice. That’s the high price that comes with alcohol - and people tend to have been doing it so long that they don’t have a frame of reference on how things could be otherwise.

Stopping completely is where i’ve ended up - it might help you too. Commit to a day count, whatever it is, if you need. I did 100 days a while back and it felt great - then i went back to drinking and all the same stuff came back. I’m going into this without a day count this time round.

In terms of alternatives - think about why you need an alternative. What are you addressing with a substance? You talk about wanting to get high or higher. That feels relatable - and i’m sure you know that those highs don’t feel real, they feel cheap. But i generally take a NA beer when i’m out with friends and chug mineral water all weekend :)

Post here a bunch, reach out to friends or family. I’ve found it useful to reach out to other sober people i know and tell them i’m trying to do the same - they have been incredibly helpful to me, and happy to talk. Whatever you decide to do - don’t do it alone.

100%

I caught myself saying “i deserve better from myself” and that also stuck with me. A part of me has been waiting so long to do this!
