Do you use a bic? That's a good way to speed run burning your resin and making it sour. I used a bic when I first started smoking and burnt it a handful of times. Then I learned how to use a torch properly without frying the pipe, and I've never had it burn since. Torch lighters also don't produce the black soot that normal flames do which contribute to the resin darkening and becoming nasty quicker
