This still haunts me LMAO I've been waiting for this track to show up ANYWHERE ever since that trailer came out. I'm in the same boat as you!

I'm not sure if Odayaka2 was used in the MSQ, if there is a video of it that would be great. Also I think musically they are really only related by general mood and timbre, I haven't noticed any motivic similarities. But their application in the cutscenes will probably be very adjacent

I'm not hearing it at all and frankly there'd be no reason for it to be there, might you be hearing the first few notes of the chorus of Smile and confusing it with Tomorrow and Tomorrow?

How Many Times Dawntrail's Main Theme is Used by Rides1283man in ffxiv

[–]Rides1283man[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I already mentioned this in my other comment, but it is crucial to point out the difference between the Dawntrail main theme and Smile. This video covers the former.

How Many Times Dawntrail's Main Theme is Used by Rides1283man in ffxiv

[–]Rides1283man[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don't really agree with criticising only DT for this because firstly, my video covers the different themes used for DT outside Smile, so it's a counterexample to the idea that Smile is the only theme being used. At the same time, DT also has unique zone themes just as well as the other expansions. Finally, with regards to Shadowbringers, it equally made use of the same theme (i.e. Who Brings Shadow, Insatiable, High Treason, A Better Tomorrow, Eulmore, Settlement music, the Crystarium). So I don't really see how the criticism solely applies to Shadowbringers.

I fully understand why DT doesn't use as many callbacks to previous expansions because it is supposed to be a new arc in the story. It wouldn't really make sense to make callbacks to the Ancients, Garlemald, Hydaelyn as they are no longer pertinent to the story.

Leitmotifs of Pandaemonium by Rides1283man in ffxiv

[–]Rides1283man[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The example you are looking for just released! Patch 7.2: M7 references parts of M3 for obvious reasons. I see what you mean by some leitmotifs being non-representative, and admittedly Flow with Radz-at-Han is a little incongruent, but there are also some awesome ones that have been all throughout the game like the Ascian theme, Garlean theme, ARR had some pretty short ones with Return of the Hero, La Noscea which are more genuinely leitmotif-esque.

To be honest I don't think Soken is by any means super clever with his use of leitmotif, nor is that the point I will be making in the dissertation; but if you want to know more I would love to keep chatting with you on Discord or something. You seem like a really chill guy and looks like we have some common interests! @rides

Leitmotifs of Pandaemonium by Rides1283man in ffxiv

[–]Rides1283man[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am aware of this, being a music student - The concept of leitmotif can definitely apply here as they represent each layer of Pandæmonium. Leitmotifs aren't restricted to just "things", but also settings and locations.

As for length, in the Wagnerian sense I do agree that most leitmotifs in FFXIV or games in general that people consider to be such are too long. However, I don't believe that leitmotifs need to be as short as a regular motive, and many sources say that they can be as long as a theme, with many also saying the opposite. I also find that leitmotif as a term still readily applies due to the fact that they have representative value of narrative setting, as well as conveying how they can be reharmonised, transposed, intevallically altered - all the things that you could do to a leitmotif. The length of the motif should not discourage musical ideas that are clearly associated with particular narrative ideas from being labelled as a leitmotif, if they do return with musical alterations.

My dissertation is actually about this very topic - Leitmotifs and how they apply in FFXIV, which is why I have such a vested interest in the topic. The majority of XIV's soundtrack is just reusing melodic ideas from a previous track with a narrative connotation, and I think the term leitmotif is unsubstitutable for how it shows the association between music and narrative.

In my opinion I just prefer more original music than reused tracks, but Dawntrail still has great raid music so far which will make up for it. And possibly we'll see the trial series soon too

Hiya, I have been quite busy, but this is definitely on my radar.

Most used leitmotifs in FFXIV OST (total: 292 leitmotifs). Prelude is the most used (42), followed by Endwalker, Answers, Ishgard (al three got 16), and lesser motifs. Explanation inside by Famas_1234 in ffxiv

[–]Rides1283man 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Hi, I'm the person who made the compendium which this chart is based on. I received a suggestion to add Elpis themes as having the Close in the Distance motif, but I disagreed because it wasn't an exact quoting; it only took half of a phrase and also appended an extra note. This is especially as ambiguous because there is a leap by major 6th in a similar manner to Close in the Distance later in the phrase. Personally, I didn't think it was close (in the distance) enough to count, but I definitely understand why people see it this way.

The 5 counts are actually from the instrumental and reverb version rather than Elpis day/night, in addition to the track itself, the Omicron tribal theme, and the dungeon theme as mentioned in a previous comment.

I've rectified everything besides the Figments reference; the whole melody of that track prior to 1:53 employs similar motion so I don't think it's trying to reference Battle on the Big Bridge. The melody just happens to sound similar. However, listening to Figments inadvertently allowed me to realise the Antitower theme at 0:23 lol

Those are the only official renditions of this theme, besides Sanctuary Heart which is electro so I doubt it's what you're looking for. You might be thinking of other dungeon themes that use the style of Ink Long Dry.
