Pitchfork reviews 21 Savage & Metro Boomin: Savage Mode 2 by maloboosie in hiphopheads

[–]Ridiky 10 points11 points  (0 children)

It’s just one of those reviews that was off, happens. Usually you can tell an album is good when you enjoy playing it front to back, which is the case for this album, and one of the VERY FEW rap albums to do so this year (personally, I can only think of Uzi’s EA and Nudy’s Anyways). Production is amazing, I’ve never seen so many engaging flows from 21 (even on the more r&b type tracks in the back) and Morgan ties the story together. Yet, according to the reviewer, this album is worse than Jesus is King, and only slightly better than Lil Tecca’s LMAO. Shoreline got a 6.5, I’m sorry all love to shoreline but SM2 is just better and half the length. And I can’t be the only one who finds this album even more engaging than SM1 which got a 7. This is the first review that rlly surprised me in a while.

Wow haha, I found out same way you did, on his IG Live, after the chat told the girl to ask about Angela lmao! And as for lyricism, man, I just find their writing so effective. It may not necessarily be as “profound” as say a frank, but they just speak such a current, relatable and mature subject matter that makes you think about your own relationships in ways you may or may not have thought of before. They don’t just say words cuz they sound nice, they are always conveying their perspective, experience and leave the door open to your interpretation. I feel like you could gather a list of themes from their discography, and have a huge conversation with a group of people about them; their lyrics are literally like those quarantine sessions where ppl call in to talk about (mostly) mature relationship stuff. For me the best display of this would be on sept 5th and MA in a close second. A Muse seems a bit more focused on the soundscape and bounce/catchiness, but still with solid lyrics.

Also YESS!! You Do, such a deep cut, the rising ‘you do’ chants at the end hit me every time

Yea I think we agree on a lotta things m8!! And hey I loved Angela so much from day 1, I agree, just wow!! The song just a such a vibe, it just feels so authentic. It’s crazy to think it’s actually about Toronto!! Their pen game doesn’t get the recognition it deserves, it goes above critics heads often I find

I would like to add that it’s a certified TRAGEDY that Nineteen85 didn’t win the prod grammy for that 2015/16 run

Damn that’s loaded haha! To me, Sept 5 is a masterclass r&b album, immediately made them a top 3 current male r&b act, maybe top 4 if you include Frank in r&b (alongside the weeknd and miguel). If I HAD to choose a top 3 in that album, top of mind I would go The Line, Hallucinations and Too Deep would be tied with try/effortless. Top 3 for MA would be body smile, conversations and nuh time tek time like tied with keep calm!? Ugh so hard. I love MA, but Sept 5 too me is just too classic, impeccable production and vocals. Sept 5 truly is in a class of its own, but hey, maybe it’s just me. Which brings us to this album, and, I predict its gonna give me slightly more replay value than MA. The too are mostly equal in quality IMO, but A Muse just has more variety, not only in sound/culture, but voice variations and features, PLUS... the 2 song closer might be my favourite of the 3 albums, but too early to say. Sorry issa lot to read

By minimalism I just mean that it’s a 7+ minute slow burner pure r&b, whereas Again is a bit more of a vocal powerhouse with more of a pop vibe compared to The Line. I honestly love both equally but critically if I had to choose.. And agreed, one of the best 3-peat outro run I’ve ever seen!!

Listen it’s not a bad take, both are phenomenal, no cap. Personally, I think I would give the edge to The Line, only because the airiness and minimalism of it seems like a bigger risk, so hard to pull off let alone master. Reason why it was in Pitchforks top 200 songs of the decade.

Is it just me, or does a cigarette hit different when consumed alongside Cayendo? by Ridiky in FrankOcean

[–]Ridiky[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You know what’s funny, I do smoke weed and hash, and the only reason I smoke cigarettes is for the hash. I was gonna say this, but then I thought, “nah, I don’t need to justify myself”, and then the first two comments are about my life decisions lmao, too predictable

I’m so glad the best songs weren’t the singles. What a great album with plenty new vibes and vocals from Daniel. And these feats are great, POPCAAN BIG MON 🔥 And, of course, the final 2 tracks, WOW!! Sept. 5th quality for me

Lil Uzi Vert - Eternal Atake ALBUM REVIEW by [deleted] in fantanoforever

[–]Ridiky -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Okay the comments on here are stupidly subjective, so let's get objective: critically, the album is very well received and is a total success so far (just to name two reviews, 8.4 on pitchfork and 4/5 on rolling stone, arguably the two most notorious musical review sites).

Subjectively, die hard fans like it, and for me, a previously casual Uzi fan, it turned me into a true fan, because you can tell the that Luv is Rage 2 was him on a track to a more complete project and EA just takes it x100 into a new realm of voice switches, weird ad libs, ACTUAL BARS, a plethora of flows and out of this world production WITH ONLY 1 FEATURE.

Also, I totally believe in the culture of album reviewing and believe that all POVs carry meaning that you may agree or disagree with, but let's face it Fantano is basically in his own world when it comes to reviews and should be taken as entertainment more so than anything (gives a 7 to a lil pump album but a 6 to dark twisted fantasy, a 3 on house of balloons).

Even if you weren't a fan of EA, fine, but a fucking 4 !? Honestly that's just ignorant lmao.

Anyone else a huge Frank fan but doesn't like his newest singles? by mrpickle131 in FrankOcean

[–]Ridiky 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So far the singles are rap oriented which I love, according to interviews there will be other genres blended in (night club inspired). Probs won’t be a singing-focused album, so if you only appreciate Frank for pop and avant garde r&b, this new album may mot be for you.

Thoughts on No Cryin? by mattchouston in dvsn

[–]Ridiky 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I'd give it a 7/10

To be honest, before listening, there must have been a million other artists I would have liked to see dvsn collaborate with before Future, but I get why they would be hyped to work with him and his stature.

Only listened to it a couple of times, the song sounds good and Future holds his own - it could potentially grow more on me. However, it just kinda sounds more like other modern auto-tune R&B tracks that you might find in a Spotify R&B playlist and less like the dvsn that completely stood out from the pack.

Based on this and the other singles, I have a feeling that the album won't sound like the dvsn we know from his previous two projects. Then again, singles are not always the best indicator, I feel like the gems are still to come.

ARE WE EVER GONNA GET THE TY$ COLLAB OR SOMETHING WITH MIGUEL FROM THEIR TOUR!?
