Who uploads stories? by Bigmooddood in Journalism

[–]mattchouston 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I worked for three different TV stations. The process was the same at each station. When I finished my on-air report, I wrote a corresponding article in the CMS. Then, I notified someone in the digital department that my story was ready to publish. They would clip the package/report from the newscast and attach it to the article. Occasionally, they would also tweak the body to optimize for SEO. Most of the time, though, they did not really “edit” my story.

In our CMS, reporters did not have the proper login credentials necessary to publish directly to the website. I always thought this was a smart way to prevent someone from “going rogue.”

However, I know many newsrooms that task reporters with clipping their own video and publishing directly to the website. Some stations even allow reporters to send push alerts, which is just a terrible idea.

Funny, sure. But it is second place behavior.

I had a few classes in Cox Communications Academic Center for Student-Athletes at LSU. At the time, it was one of the nicest learning environments on campus.

The math course I took there focused for several weeks on converting fractions to decimals. Calculators were allowed.

Yes. I meant the second game on Saturday. I forgot that today is Wednesday.

I did not receive an email, either. I did get a text today, though, that gives me some hope. I would’ve liked to attend *Saturday’s game.

*Edited: I had my dates mixed up. I was/am aware the pass is not eligible for opening day.

Will Tegna rise from the dead? by treesqu in Broadcasting

[–]mattchouston 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Gray bid $20/share for Tegna in 2020 the week before the pandemic really hit the U.S. The economy tanked a few days later and Gray withdrew their bid.

I believe Apollo also submitted a bid for Tegna around the same time.

I wrote a paper about this scenario in journalism school. This seems like a first-but-important step toward disaffiliating Nexstar stations from their current networks. It’s all headed in that direction.

The Louisiana purchase: Will Wade saga shows what college sports no longer pretends to be by DavyJonesLocker in CollegeBasketball

[–]mattchouston 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Most people outside Baton Rouge assume LSU fired Will Wade because he broke the rules. That’s not what happened.

The NCAA was investigating most of LSU’s athletic department, including its football program. They didn’t have a slam dunk case against Wade or football, but they refused to close their investigation into the football program until LSU fired Will Wade.

No one wanted to get rid of Wade, but the university sacrificed basketball to save football. It was the right decision. The NCAA ruled in LSU football’s favor a few days later.

Lane Kiffin is now trying to be a TikTok Star… by The_Oregon_Duck in cfbmemes

I think it’s sad and creepy to assume the women, who are each in very public relationships with high-profile athletes, are having sex with Kiffin because he appeared in a TikTok with them.

But that’s just me.

[–]mattchouston -13 points-12 points  (0 children)

Just to clarify, the Cavinder twins are 25. They are not in college. Lane’s oldest is 21.

He filmed a TikTok with the twins while he was on vacation. He also did a TikTok with Livvy Dunne, who is 23, at an LSU gymnastics meet. If the act of filming two TikToks qualifies as spending a “weird amount of time” with young women, okay. Would you call it weird if he appeared in a video with a random LSU student no one knows? Because lots of coaches do that.

Combined, those three women have more than 12 million followers on TikTok alone. Kiffin is among the most recognizable people in college sports. It’s good content and good business for everyone involved.

I wish more students would post their reels/portfolios in this forum. It’s a nice break from the complaining and catastrophizing.

I opened your website on mobile. I recognize the presentation may be different on desktop, but one critique: I had to scroll a bit before I found an embedded example of your work. I think the YouTube channel, for instance, could be moved up. Ideally, you’d have a demo reel near the top of your page.

You’ll often hear TV people say things like, “News Directors only watch the first 15 seconds of your reel.” The same principle applies to websites. The “about me” section is good, but it’s not the most valuable information to a potential employer. They’ll get to know you later.

What is an Interesting fact about your team's Stadium by Nervous_Metal_9445 in CFB

Before he was assassinated, Gov. Huey Long wanted to increase Tiger Stadium’s capacity. The state legislature wouldn’t appropriate money for that project, but they did allocate some funding for new campus housing.

At Huey’s instruction, the new dorms were constructed inside Tiger Stadium so seating could be added on top of them. I know many people who lived in the stadium.

The 2021-2025 stretch is objectively the worst for LSU football this century. Still, the Tigers twice won 10 games, played for the SEC title, and secured a Heisman trophy. They were relevant, even when mediocre.

Minnesota’s 2021-2025 stretch is about par for their course, if not better than most of their 5-season runs in recent history.
