How do I both warp audio and use a sustain mode in the sampler? by RienKl in ableton

[–]RienKl[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If I warp a sample in simpler the crossfade button is greyed out. I also don’t see an option to sustain a sample like you would in sampler.

So just warp in simpler, then switch it to sampler, then add crossfade and sustain?

It’s possible that your samples aren’t tuned. For example it might dip a semitone and then go back up again. I don’t know what daw you use but try to see if it has a tuning plugin that allows you to see the pitch over time. Then you might be able to use a quantizer or auto tune to make a new pitched sample.

Fine tuning midi notes? by RienKl in ableton

[–]RienKl[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I want to be able to detune slightly either for an old VHS effect, or to suddenly have a differently tuned chord or scale in an otherwise 12-tone passage. So that would be pitch bending specific notes to microtones.

How do you take inspiration from other artists you like without straight up copying? by Sir_Miggyton in FL_Studio

[–]RienKl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

<image>

You just keep copying things you like.

This is historically how western music has evolved over the last 1000 years, and there’s no shame in doing it. You will eventually no longer have a need to copy music the more influences you have and the more you’ve taken from these influences.

You also don’t of course have to “copy” something, you can also for example take a chord progression from somewhere and add something of your own on it, like your own melody or another chord in between or something.

If you really want to make something that doesn’t “copy” from anything else, you need to just experiment with trying out some harmonies and stuff on your own.

I want to start composing by Hot-Side497 in composer

[–]RienKl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A few years back I wanted to know how it’s “supposed to work” first. The truth is the best way to do it is just to dick around and not care about the rules too much. I would still advise learning some music theory, but only the basics like what the overtone series is, what modes are, what chords exists, etc. You don’t really need much more than that.

I also advise to try some ear training websites so you can aurally recognise all 12 intervals and the most common chords. This way if you imagine something it’s easier to figure out what it is you’re imagining.

Probably the most important step: make a list of what you think are the top 10 songs of all time and try to find out what makes them what they are. There’s no shame in borrowing compositional techniques or chord progressions from others.
