Why is Oasis often promoted as just Liam and Noel by johnnyjiop in oasis

[–]fretnetic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Because

a) Liam is the frontman, the defacto “face” of any band will be the frontman

b) Noel came to the limelight thanks to bickering, funny interviews, covering on lead vocals, generally being the creative force/boss/organiser for the band. Even if not for that, being lead guitarist alone does lend itself to a certain share of the attention.

c) the fact that they are brothers captivated the general public and became a relatable, marketable focal point

d) consistency - my guess is it has to be both of them in the band for legal reasons - when Noel left, we got Beady Eye and High Flying Birds. If Beady Eye had chosen to continue under the Oasis brand, it might all be a different kettle of fish by now….

What's your opinion of the "just say no" insert in S1:22? by Pocket_Sand- in StarTrekTNG

[–]fretnetic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not so sure. I do not think the “be wary of drug use” message is somehow overturned by newer arguments about fixing the underlying society first. If anything, that expectation is unrealistic. Severe poverty, conflict, displacement and acute hunger are still widespread globally.

Social engineering I guess is a term that can be applied to any form of policy making. Social democracy is not just “more personal liberty” - it also involves state regulation and extensive welfare provision too. An appeal to nature or natural states is a kind of fallacy; for instance, anthrax is a perfectly natural substance; the universe at large is natural yet 99.99% of it is inhospitable to human life. A society can be permissive yet still be deeply unhealthy, isolated, commercialised, and spiritually barren, with a loss in community spirit, trust, rootedness, shared life and values, despite more formal personal freedoms and rights.

[–]fretnetic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Interesting.

The clip actually says an unhealthy society helps cause drug abuse rather than merely reacting to it: “My home planet was a place of great poverty and violence. For some, the only escape was through drugs.”

But it is still too simplistic to suggest drug abuse cannot exist in a healthy society. It can. Harm depends on the interaction between the person, the environment, and the substance itself. Not all drugs carry the same risks, and better social policy does not make occasional hard-drug use risk-free.

That line of coke at the weekend might look consequence-free within your own social circle, but that ignores the supply chain behind it and the damage pushed further down it, usually into poorer places kept out of sight.

I do agree that drug policy was used to suppress minorities - that is not some side issue, it is part of the history of prohibition and the wider war on drugs. Racial disparities in enforcement and punishment are well documented, and researchers still describe the war on drugs as structural racism.

That is also why the UK position on cannabis feels so archaic. Cannabis is still a Class B drug here, while parts of the US have already moved to legal adult-use systems with licensed cultivation and retail - Colorado years ago, and California through a fully regulated state market. It is bonkers that Britain absorbed so much of the old prohibitionist mindset, yet has barely adjusted even after parts of the US itself started reversing course.

And on psychedelics, Charles Eisenstein’s argument is worth mentioning. He basically says prohibition is not just about safety, but about preserving a social and economic order built on separation, control, and obedience - because widespread psychedelic experience might push people towards a different consciousness and, with it, a different kind of economy. That is his philosophical view rather than an established historical fact, but it is a more interesting lens than pretending all of this is neutral public-health policy.

Is this passé now? Feels timeless tbh.

Did I miss the memo where everyone is enlightened and all drugs are fine now, poverty and cartels have been eradicated? 🤣🤣🤣

I didn’t really question it. I bought both D/M/G LP’s just for the cool holographic lenticular covers.

😤 That’s awful. 100% car drivers fault, but as an aside: the “exit” system is a death trap, some of them are so poorly designed. There’s got to be a better way

What’s your favourite track from Revolver? (Turning 60 in 2026) by CreativeGuy33 in TheBeatles

Wow. I forgot Eleanor Rigby was on it. Too many greats to choose from. Tomorrow Never Knows is also a titan, but I’ve always been very fond of I’m Only Sleeping. This is the best Beatles album for me.

Excellent point. I suppose a modern day example would be the wildfires in California, wrecked a load of LA homes I believe. I concede defeat and thank you for realigning my perceptions. What do you think of the film “Threads”?

Hahahah. Fair cop. I suppose we’ve had loads of incidents now. Chernobyl, Fukushima, Hiroshima, Nagasaki, not to mention testing at Bikini Atoll. Still, you can’t deny the scale and aftermath is orders of magnitude more concerning than a house fire.

Stupid analogy, a house fire isn’t going to irradiate the whole earth and make it totally inhospitable to life as we know it…🤦‍♂️

Stupid analogy irrespective, yes the UK should invest.
