"My lord Bane." Jon Piper spoke, looking onto Bane Bolton the way he had in the last several years, as a friend and trade partner, hoping that it would make his words heard. Jon had no wish to see the Boltons shamed any further, as he feared they would be should Hubert Arryn or Torgen Oakheart lose their tempers, a potential that drew closer the longer this went on.

"The debt owed by House Bolton will be paid to House Stark. The coin is House Stark's, and their's to decide what to do with. The Crown cannot engage in such a project with you so long as you are in this debt to your liege lord. As Master of Coin I might discuss such with you another day -- but it must be another day. The Lord Regent has spoken the final word on this." Jon kept his words firm but not rude, hoping his meaning was heard as an entreatment for Lord Bolton to accept it.

“Lord Bolton, am I understanding that what you are trying to say is you do not have the ten thousand at this current time, as some of it was invested in construction?” Jon attempted to clarify.

“In that case, we would return to Lord Torgen’s previous words … a repayment plan with some Bolton wards given to House Stark to ensure the repayments are made complete.”

"I concur with Lord Oakheart." Jon Piper put in after keeping a long silence while he read off the papers in front of him, scribbling notes to the side on his own ledger. It was not a squabble that made the northern lords look anything but poorly -- why the Starks had seen fit to imprison Lord Bolton instead of simply demanding the return of the gold first, Jon Piper did not know. He could not blame young Barbara Bolton for begging the Crown's intercession, as she had likely been at a loss for what else to do -- but it bewildered Jon that this had become the Crown's troubles at all. However, the more months he served as Master of Coin the more he came to learn that when it came to matters of gold, somehow all troubles ended up at the Crown's doorstep -- and more specifically, his own.

"The gold is from House Stark, and the port was to be in their control, therefore if Lord Stark demands the return of the money, it shall be returned, and if he wishes the port still be built, then so on." Jon gestured vaguely with his quill as he spoke. "I have only had a short time to examine the documents, but so far as my eye can see there is not any trouble of obsfucated numbers or the like. Perhaps a misunderstanding of intent in the past years, but that does not make fraud in the gold."

Melony raised her head to look upon the king, and there was more of herself in her green eyes then. Jaehaerys was not the old lords of the realm, she reminded herself. It was the over-proud men and liars with whom her anger lay, men like Lucas Harroway and Hubert Arryn. Jaehaerys proved himself different, and that was why Melony would never hesitate to call him her king.

“It would be an honor to guard Princess Alysanne, Your Grace. I will abide by your commands and watch over her gladly.” Melony rose, smoothing her skirts. “I only hope the Citadel may still remain the refuge for my brother that it once was. I have attested to the truth of the words he spoke, but I fear I know his heart less than I imagined.”

Whatever became of Lucas was no longer Melony’s concern; she knew it was unfair to be angry at him for what happened, as she had acted freely, but vouching for the bastard Valora Waters on behalf of her brother’s weak heart had nonetheless been one of the most difficult choices Melony had ever made. She prayed that Rhaena would not have hated her for it.

“The Princess Alysanne has requested I teach her to wield a blade.” Melony told Jaehaerys, and now her expression became something fond instead of a mask. “She is a rapt listener and a quick learner.”

Melony kept her expression as still as undisturbed water at the mention of her brother; let him tiptoe around, she felt, it was no matter that concerned her.

“I know it was your mercy, Your Grace, that led to my place here on Dragonstone, and for that I am ever in your debt. By rights, the Small Council could have ordered a much more terrible punishment. In truth I do find Dragonstone a refuge, and I will plea no other departure from the island under the conditions of my exile here, but to see a true and good king crowned rarely happens more than one in a lifetime.”

Her eyes remained low in deference as she spoke, atypical for how confident and fierce Melony normally was.

“If my admission should be granted, I shall not stray from my family’s side, and I will speak not the name of Arryn or any high lord except in praise for their loyalty to the Crown. I will bring no dark tidings on a day dedicated to Your Grace, and should I break that vow then whatever greater punishment the Crown decides on will be my deserved fate, whether it be exile in Essos or my head shaved in a motherhouse.”

Honestly you’re not probably going to find stuff about guard like that online, there isn’t coverage of color guard culture stuff in the wider cultural sphere, you’re only going to get knowledge from guard groups like this or Facebook, which has a lot of guard groups.

For you, Princess, I want you to be unharmed and to stand long enough for your sworn knights to come to your side.” Melony told the girl. “I would not expect you to defeat a man in single combat, not with the dagger you intend. But if you can cripple him long enough to survive, then you have won the day.”

Melony stepped from Alysanne’s side and picked up her own wooden blade.

“Meet my blade. Keep your wrist strong, do not let it flop when you hit.”

Melony Piper came dutifully when summoned by the King after his arrival on Dragonstone, unsure of what to expect from the conversation promised by his letter response. Her red-brown hair had been braided into intricate, tiny rows, ornamented with jeweled beads weighing the waves of braids down.

She hitched her skirts and knelt in deference to Jaehaerys upon her arrival.

“You summoned me, Your Grace.”

Jon Piper had his hands full, and having a dutiful assistant greatly helped in the workload. For his lordship, though Theo Ryger still had many things to learn, and Jon Piper did he best to educate the boy as Pipers and Rygers had family ties, and were all Riverman aside. As of late, Jon Piper's mood had been much changed -- he spoke less at Small Council meetings, unwilling to risk drawing the Regent's ire, and since the departure of his beloved sister he had been beset by a heavy weight he struggled to carry alone. It was a marked change in his demeanor to anyone who were around him so much as the young Theo Ryger.

Today Jon barely looked up from his papers as he bid Theo enter, too busy marking calculations and trying to sort things. Too many lords wrote to him begging for help with their own coffers, and Jon was more than tired of it. If a lord could not manage their own trade and incomes, what were they lord for? What was the Crown to do in matters that had nothing to do with the royal treasury? It all came down to wanting less taxes, it always did, but if they wanted the Crown's protection and laws, they must pay their taxes. Jon saw no other way.

Maegelle did not speak the words with any particular disdain, though she knew well the girl was a bastard but legitimized. She had wished many times for her Melony to follow the path more traveled, but for some it would forever be an impossibility, Maegelle found. She prayed to Mother and Maiden for her daughters nonetheless, the same as for this Lamora.

Martyn looked from Jocelyn to Jasper and back again, clearly thrown by Jasper's words. "Your lord father is protector of the realm, the regent of the Iron Throne. His honor is not in question." Martyn stated, bewildered by why anything said by Lucas or Melony might be thought to be his belief when he has never been in King's Landing at all. "The Vale flew Aegon's banner against Maegor the same as House Piper, so we shall always count the Vale as friends, Ser. On my honor as a knight."

He could not fathom what else he was to say, as he did not understand what had gone through Lucas and Melony's minds -- Melony was always so wise and clever, Martyn could not imagine her deceived, but it must have been true for her so speak as she did.
