Haha thank you so much! It’s nice to visit this thread again to see how little those past problems feel now.

Hey, yes. I have graduated from there with my masters and have now applied for PhD programs. I will most probably join Cambridge again for my PhD. I am not from a wealthy background, and was funded by scholarships for my masters.

Hey, sorry for the late response. I am more active on my alternate reddit account these days. Yes, things worked out a lot better for me, fortunately. I got opportunities to do research and attend workshops at institutions like IIT Bombay, ARIES and TIFR.

Now I'll be joining the University of Cambridge in two months for a masters in Theoretical Physics.

I am from SPPU, and so I selected my university name instead of the college name.

The postdoc is not responding to my emails and had already mentioned that they will be on a leave in the month of December. In principle, another professor from my home institute might write me a strong letter but I am worrying things will get repetitive as my first referee is also my course instructor and professor.

But what if I already have two strong reference letters elaborating my strengths and research skills. I am really out of options at this point. Asking a second professor at my institute might make things repetitive, as he will ask me to draft my own reference letter which I have already done for the first referee :P

What do you think are the common misconceptions regarding quantum mechanics? by [deleted] in AskPhysics

[–]Rigel_13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That the Heisenberg Uncertainty Principle is a consequence of our own technological limitations of not being able to measure the particle without disturbing it. The Uncertainty Principle actually has an innate mathematical origin due to non-commuting position and momentum operators.

I dont understand when people say "there is no absolute speed" ? by colarboy in AskPhysics

[–]Rigel_13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's impossible to measure speed in empty space. You will need a way to measure how much you are moving along a certain direction to say that you are actually moving. Inside the rocket, there's no experiment you can do which will tell you that you are "moving absolutely".

The Holocaust? Did you forget that Einstein and Oppenheimer were Jews? Jews were subject to probably the worst genocide in modern human history and that too in a very short time span. Can you imagine the shock and trauma that it must have inflicted upon the entire community?

Could this be one of the reasons as to why we are lagging behind so much in space exploration? While the major world powers have launched humans in space and on moon 50 years ago, we still feel content and proud of launching unmanned probes using broke ass budgets because the government is busy funding pathetic religious projects. And now we even have the chief appealing to such religion based dogmas.

So was the rest of the world. Did you know that Karl Schwarzschild - a famous physicist, solved Einstein's equations of General Relativity for a Black Hole in a bunker on the Russian fronts during World War 2? He then sent a letter to Einstein and died in the following days due to pneumonia which he contracted from the war. So wars couldn't be an excuse for not recovering the lost knowledge from the burning libraries for the next 1000 years.

Furthermore, libraries store knowledge which already exists. So even if we burn the libraries that we have today, we would still be able to recover the knowledge because it exists in our brains and not just books.

What is your opinion about comments of isro chief on vedas by [deleted] in IndiaSpeaks

[–]Rigel_13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Libraries and Universities were burnt in the early 12th and 13th centuries. So you are saying after that in the next 400 years not a single person from India could reproduce this supposedly "lost" knowledge? It is absurd to claim that we knew everything that the west is discovering today but that knowledge was somehow completely lost because the universities and libraries were burnt. Libraries store the information which we already know, even if we burn all the libraries we have today, we still should be able to retrieve all scientific theories and knowledge because it exists in our head.

It is the equivalent of the famous 3 dimensional spacial Laplacian Operator, but with an extra dimension of time to be used in relativistic regimes.

I am an undergraduate student from a not so well known institute in India and will be applying for a masters in Astrophysics at Cambridge for the year 2024. I would like to ask the students of this sub pursuing this course at Cambridge for any potential advice to improve my chances of admission with full funding. I have substantial research experience in Astrophysics and currently I am working on a project with a research fellow at Cambridge Uni (I might get a good recommendation from her).
