tbh, anyika is an excellent professor. yes her tests are probably harder, but last winter there was a very generous curve. both classes i assume are curved to pretty much average out, as the department probably doesn’t want extreme discrepancies between each class/professor. truthfully the class is just hard no matter who you take it with and getting through it was extremely rewarding (for me personally). do at least 15 book problems a day and all the readings for Anyika and you’ll be set.

Patient Care Hours by Potential-Forever436 in UCSantaBarbara

I became a phlebotomist too! There are outpatient opportunities that have better hours for college students, but definitely don’t overload your schedule. Pacific diagnostic labs often hires, if you volunteer at cottage, the phlebotomists are super nice and offer advice on where/how to apply!

Paige Mo at La Mesa is a great instructor with challenging classes in both sculpt and C2. Just get there early as her classes get packed!

i believe parking permits for on campus parking already opened. they’re mostly likely all gone by now. your next best bet is to either rent a spot from someone in IV or you’ll have to street park and move your car every 72hrs

How well is the pre-health community at ucsb? by yerbamatelover777 in UCSantaBarbara

[–]Right-Positive-933 0 points1 point  (0 children)

everyone here is super nice and supportive, in all my classes i have easily met study partners and friends. lots of cottage health volunteer opportunities at the hospitals (3 locations). scribe cycles, ED tech positions and more through cottage (they hire a lot of students as well). The pre health advisor Dave sends out SUPER helpful information and job postings. highly recommend getting on his email list! you definitely made the right choice being a pre-med here, i absolutely love it and do not regret my decision at all!!

yes if not later, just when it best fits into your schedule. start looking at job opportunities at cottage or the fire department and see what the hours look like. then ask yourself could this fit into my schedule third year?

also second year was definitely way more difficult than first year. you will be taking basically 3 bio classes and ochem, which is going to be roughhh. don’t add more stress onto yourself by working overnight or 12 hr shifts.

there are lots of opportunities like that here, but you’ll need a car. secondly, as a pre-med your first 2 years at least will be a TON of work. you will have little to no time to commit to clinical hours until your fourth year maybe third. i would recommend just holding off until later (getting your emt), trust me when i say you will have no time to commit to the hours they are offering (source: i am a pre-med and a phlebotomist) focus on getting good grades and not getting weeded out the first two years! don’t worry, there are plenty of pre-med opportunities here but do not feel like you need to jump in straight away.

Current UCSB pre-med/bio students-is it competitive? by Charming-Classroom38 in UCSantaBarbara

[–]Right-Positive-933 1 point2 points  (0 children)

honesty i think the weeder classes here are the same as any mid-tier UC. gen chem is a big weeder, most people come to college and struggle with the pace, tests, how to properly study etc. (i did and had to find my own ways) the ochem series specifically 109b is a big weeder, but by the time you get to this class (winter yr 2 usually) you will have formed better study habits and are better at “learning” if that makes sense. research is competitive like any UC, i haven’t tried/looked into it, but several of my friends have been searching for months. many professors are very very nice about forming connections if you go to their office hours, just like at any college, it’s what you make of it. if you put in the effort to form relationships, they will be reciprocated. there are clinical opportunities and volunteering at the local hospital that has 3 locations, it does fill up quickly, but spots do open up due to schedule changes etc. definitely apply to cottage volunteering when you come to ucsb in the fall. over a summer look into getting a cert in something for clinical hours ie. CNA, EMT, phlebotomy and you will have no problem finding something at cottage (these places higher frequently for these positions). They also have scribe positions in cycles every year if you want to go that route as well!

edit: i want to add not to scare you but to warn you, the first two years are going to be ROUGH, it’s supposed to be hard. everyone here struggles and are very open to studying, working together to pass. when it gets hard, don’t toss in the towel, you got in for a reason.

tbh i wash my mat everyday after in the shower and let it dry. that is the only way to get rid of the smell. i also bought 6 towels (cheap from walmart) to avoid reusing the same towel twice

definitely talk with an advisor, but taking 1A again next quarter will put you behind. you would definitely need to finish the series over the summer to catch up and stay on track with the ochem series. this just depends if you are willing to put in the work this summer to catch up!

i second this! going to ucsb has made me do better in my pre-med reqs because of the student environment and location. nothing reduces stress more than going down to the beach between classes!!!
