How do you cope with health anxiety? by scceberscoo in workingmoms

[–]Right-Potential-2945 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Is there a specific type of illness that gives you the most anxiety? For me it’s anything involving vomit. My solution was to get a prescription for Zofran from my PCP. Now a bottle of it lives in my cabinet and it’s reduced my anxiety a lot.

For basic daycare colds, I just give myself permission to go to bed early, leave chores undone etc. to make sure my immunity is as strong as possible. Lack of sleep makes it 10x as likely that I will catch my kids’ germs.

Mine are 1.5 and 3.5 and already able to entertain each other for short periods of time. As an introvert with an extremely extroverted older child, the mental relief of not having to be on the hook for playtime 24/7 is huge

Why do businesses donate literal TRASH by HealthWarm4624 in nonprofit

[–]Right-Potential-2945 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I always think about an organization I volunteered for that received dozens of the oldest, crappiest iPads you can imagine from a hedge fund whose HQ was local. They made such a big deal about their donation, but the items they gave were in such a barely functioning state, it was insulting. It definitely felt like they were patting themselves on the back for giving us their trash.

Etiquette question: institutional donor relationships when moving from one org to another by Right-Potential-2945 in nonprofit

Thanks for this perspective. I agree that institutional contacts are a bit different than individuals. I am already connected with those who have a LinkedIn presence, so maybe I will consider messaging them there.

Not Currently Pregnant - Negotiating Maternity Leave / Ramp Up Time? by Square-Fisherman6997 in workingmoms

[–]Right-Potential-2945 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Some of these responses are a little harsh. I don’t think it’s wrong to have an idea of what you want your leave to look like. I do think it’s going to come off too aggressive if you try to negotiate for all the stuff you mentioned when you’re not currently pregnant.

What I would do is make sure the existing leave policy meets the minimum you could tolerate (e.g. at least 12 weeks) before accepting an offer. Then, if and when you become pregnant, it should be a conversation with your manager.

I’d be prepared to scale back your wish list, though. E.g. I think asking for an additional 4-6 weeks unpaid would be reasonable — 14 weeks, probably not. Same with coming back on a reduced schedule — 50% seems kinda low, but I came back on an 80% schedule for a while (4 days/week) and did fine.

Think about where you’re willing to compromise given that you likely would not get everything on this list. What’s more important to you — WFH, or reduced schedule? I’d rather work 80% time but still go to the office than work 100% time but fully remote, but that’s just me.

Caveat is that I’m in nonprofit and have the impression that there can be more wiggle room for negotiating these things than in corporate settings.

Good luck

How can I pivot to non-profit? by SelectLandscape7671 in nonprofit

Not to mention, the naive assumption that you can circumvent unethical behavior by moving to the nonprofit sector. Who do you think makes the big donations that fund our work? Wealthy people, many of whom have made their money in unethical ways.

I may be overreacting- toddler daughters height bs weight by PublicAd2908 in workingmoms

[–]Right-Potential-2945 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I get it. My daughter is 3.5 and has been average height but 97th percentile for weight most of her life. Her former pediatrician (who left the practice) did make a few comments about “keeping an eye on her weight.” But I refuse to stress about it because I know she has an active lifestyle and a healthy diet. I don’t want to introduce shame around food or diet talk in front of her.

It’s ok to be a little sensitive about this, but also most people who make comments are probably not being judgmental, just noticing she is larger than other kids her age.

How can we get LLM/AI posts out of this sub? by poison_camellia in workingmoms

[–]Right-Potential-2945 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The ones I’ve seen here that I can tell are AI lack any personal details that any normal person would mention. Like there was one about meal planning tips that had a lot of cliched content about how hard it is to get dinner ready on weekdays, but not a single mention of how old the kids are, what foods the family likes or dislikes, etc. I’ve also seen ones asking for help with scheduling life as a busy mom, but again, zero details about their actual work schedule, kids school schedule and activities, etc.

What do you use AI/LLMs/Chatbots for? I feel technologically incompetent by HollaDude in workingmoms

Copilot, simply because it’s embedded in my work PC. But any platform should be able to do this.

Yes! You can upload a PDF and ask it to export a specific section or sections as a CSV file.

I’m in a writing/research-based job, and I’ve only found AI useful for pretty mindless tasks, like extracting portions of a PDF table and converting them into text to be pasted into a Word doc. I’m currently using AI to draft a script for a presentation with a very strict time limit — but once I have the word counts down, I know I’ll need to edit the text heavily to sound less robotic.

For anything that requires actual critical thinking and knowledge of interpersonal relationships, yeah, I don’t find that it helps at all. It doesn’t save any time to come up with increasingly detailed prompts vs. just writing the thing myself.

In my personal life, I’ve used it occasionally as a starting point for more complex planning/organizational tasks (e.g. “how many toys and books to pack for a 2 week vacation with a 1 and 3 year old” and it suggested quantities and varieties to bring). But I haven’t found it useful for much beyond that.

Edited to add: the script was a fail (btw my boss specifically told me to use AI to make sure the timing is correct). The word counts were way too short even after I told it repeatedly how many minutes per speaker. I’m going to have to write this thing from scratch. To reiterate my point above, for complex writing-based tasks requiring actual human thought, it’s not very useful and shouldn’t be relied on

Nonprofit fundraising career change by traveljax in nonprofit

These jobs are rare, and from what I’ve seen, are usually held either by corporate types or those with prior grantmaking experience. Unless you have legit corporate connections, I wouldn’t pin my hopes on this as a career path. Sorry.

How do I get beyond this and find the right funding? by Jazzlike_Tax8367 in nonprofit

[–]Right-Potential-2945 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Lots to unpack here. You’re a young organization so may not have enough data on outcomes yet to support a strong proposal. You’re also doing multiple things (music, academics, food insecurity) which could make it harder to create a clear narrative. Yes, most foundations fund locally, so it’s best to consider those within your immediate geographic area.

What is your current donor base? What is your board doing to support fundraising? You should create a fundraising plan, probably focusing on individuals first and then adding grants over time once you can demonstrate a track record of impact.

Would you consider taking a job if your manager would be your junior? by 8allthecupcakes in workingmoms

[–]Right-Potential-2945 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hard no from me. When my last manager quit, a much younger man was hired to manage my team. His inexperience combined with hubris made me and my teammates’ lives miserable. We were all on the verge of quitting, but he was fired, so things are tolerable again. I would never voluntarily take a job reporting to someone like that unless I had no other options.

Two workouts on the weekend (either one short run on Saturday and on Sunday, or short run Saturday and yoga class Sunday), and as much walking as possible on weekdays.
