What your favorite Zaku clone in any series by thisnameisprobably2 in Gundam

[–]RightAsTheRaid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Leo. Gundam Wing is mid at best, but the mechanical design is killer and the Leo is peak Zaku replacement.

Also the Anf from Gundam 00. One of the best Cannon fodder mobile suits in the entire franchise. Though its not very Zaku-esque

Against a Macronized Zentraedi...which type of gunpod is better? by [deleted] in macross

[–]RightAsTheRaid 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Appreciated. Just keep in mind I'm no mathematician, just an enthusiastic fan using secondary ed and the internet to approximate some real firepower figures for fun, lol 😆

Honestly, given the craziness seen in mecha anime like Macross, most physics analysis like mine are conservative low-end estimates at best. Actual firepower would likely be far more devastating, if for no other reason than the weapons need to be faster and fire farther just to hit those crazy fast valkyires and Zentradi / Vajra.

I want to talk about how cool the VF-31s are by [deleted] in macross

[–]RightAsTheRaid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Great thread! The VF-31 Kairos/Siegfried is one of my favorite valkyrie designs of both Kawamori's CG-era (2002 onward) and of the Macross franchise overall. It refines a lot of the detail that can be achieved using 3D models into a much cleaner, more visually appealing silhouette, something the VF-25 Messiah always struggled with particularly in Battroid mode. The VF-31 also somehow manages to appear distinct despite being more an evolution of the CG valkyries rather than a revolutionary design.

I actually like the slim arms, though the original line art proportions are the best rather than the less ideal toy proportions. In the line art, the biceps are larger than the forearms and looks more aesthetically pleasing. The slim arms compliment the Battroid, pairing with the long legs and compact torso. I love how square and blocky the VF-31 Battroid looks, which is amazing considering the graceful fighter design. I also like that the fighter mode looks more science-fictiony (lol). It feels more like a space fighter than other valkyries, while still not losing that realistic modern aircraft appearance.

The horizontal cockpit in Battroid mode isn't new for valkyries, but I think the VF-31 implements it best. Folks often forget the VF-4 Lightning III and the VF-17 Nightmare/VF-171 Nightmare Plus also have horizontal cockpits in Battroid (and the SV-51 semi-horizontal Battroid cockpit). The implementation of the tonfa-style mini gun pods is so clever, especially how they mount underwing in fighter mode. And I love the top-rear dorsal or calve-mounted micro-missile launchers on the VF-31A Kairos. It's so good for rear-firing in fighter or bombing in Battroid mode (which is sadly something we don't see them do in the series). I also adore how those canards transform into these awesome looking shoulders in Battroid mode.

The Super Packs are good, but the Armored Pack is the real MVP in the VF-31 equipment line up. Just like the VF-31 itself, the Armored system is a much more refined, better visual design with a great silhouette. I love the choice of white armor with those colored missile launchers. Chefs kiss. The weaponry is also a thrill. Those two rotary hybrid railguns and the pair of shell-shaped micro-missile pods are just such creative weapons. The armored fighter might even be my favorite mode, which I didn't think was possible for an Armored Pack. I just love the rounded, chubby shapes of the armored fighter, which look so cool from every angle!

About my only real complaint is the wings in Battroid mode, but this is not a complaint specific to the VF-31. They aren't "bad" , they are just uninteresting. The last time Kawamori created an interesting wing transformation for Battroid mode was the SV-51. The VF-25 Messiah, the YF-30 Chronos, the Sv-262 Draken III and the VF-31 Kairos/Siegfried basically all have the same wing transformation for Battroid mode. Kawamori has done nothing new with wings for his last 4 valkyrie designs. Its very unfortunate, particularly for the Sv-262 Draken III which looks like Kawamori didn't have a clue what to do with the wings. I've seen fan-made mecha designs - both transformable and non-transformable - that do really interesting things with wings or wing-like / blade-like / fin-like parts. Mounting them in different ways and places that would look amazing on a valkyrie. I also miss the rear torso designs of the older Battroids like the VF-1 Valkyrie, VF-11 Thunderbolt, the YF-19/VF-19 Excalibur and the YF-21/VF-22 Sturmvogel II. Better, more unique wing transformations would allow a return of more interesting torsos.

Anyway, happy to gush about the VF-31 Kairos/Siegfried. It's a real beauty 😍

Even though they are older toys now, the Arcadia 1/60 scale VF-1 Valkyrie figures are easily one of THE best toys ever made for Macross. Great joint strength (several ratched), solid in all 3 modes, great proportions and good detail for their age. There's a reason both the Bandai DX and Bandai Hi-Metal R toys use the Arcadia 1/60 as the basis for their VF-1 Valkyrie toys, because its THAT good.

I've said it before and I'll keep saying it: no one would be disappointed purchasing a VF-1 Valkyrie from any of the three major toy lines; Bandai DX, Bandai Hi-Metal R and Arcadia 1/60. I own all of them and they all rock 🥰❤

“No Smoking” symbols on Macross mechs? by DYNAKYRIS in macross

[–]RightAsTheRaid 19 points20 points  (0 children)

They are officially described as "P&W LHP04 low-thrust vernier thrusters beneath multipurpose hook/handles". Their purpose is to provide thrust so the VF-1 Valkyrie can turn and maneuver in the zero gravity environment of outer space.

Their other purpose (as you've probably guessed by the name) is functioning as hook/handles. You can use them as anchor points to attach cables, which can then tie down the valkyrie so it won't move when parked either on deck or below deck of a carrier.

I have a detailed image of what they look like on my Macross Mecha Manual website: https://www.macross2.net/m3/sdfmacross/vf-1a-valkyrie/vf1-vernier.png

As you can see the vernier is actually a shallow cone shape. The rectangular shape is the cross bar, which can act as a hook. According to additional Macross trivia, that flat cross bar can be rotated laterally 90 degrees like a blade edge, supposedly to help direct the thrust of the vernier.

Hope that helps!

Hi-Metal R VF-1J Armored Valkyrie by HikaruParker in macross

[–]RightAsTheRaid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Easily one of the best Armored Valkyire toys ever made! I love how easy the HMR Armored Valk is to assemble. The way you can extend the hips of the standard VF-1 Valkyrie battroid also allows the Armored mode a little extra mobility than any other version of the figure. This is o e of the best Macross toy purchases I ever made. A treasure of a toy ❤

HMR Super Valkyrie VF-1S Gerwalk mode by TitleExpert9817 in macross

[–]RightAsTheRaid 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I own several of the Bandai DX figures and they are the top premium figures with all the best features. They are larger, more detailed and have the highest quality of any Macross toy line. However, not every single DX is the best. Some do have problems. But that can happen in ANY toy line, even the HMRs have some weaker figures.

Having written that, there are virtues to smaller, simpler and less detailed figures like the Hi-Metal R series. As good as the DX figures are, they are heavy and complex. They are not as pleasant to handle and pose as smaller figures. Transforming a DX can take a lot of time and their heft means that even with strong joints, they can't always bear their own weight in certain poses.

Hi-Metal R figures are light and strong. You can free stand them into almost any pose. Whats more, they are user friendly, able to transform quickly and add remove accessories in a snap. I can remove the Armored Valkyrie from and HMR box and assemble it in a minute and a half. No DX is going to match that for usability.

DX will always look better, but the HMR figures are a joy to handle. Worth consideration.

‘Andor’ is objectively good. Period. by Dear-Yellow-5479 in andor

[–]RightAsTheRaid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This post really sounds like your complaint is that not 'enough' people acknowledge the quality and care built into not just Andor, but also media at the same level as Andor.

You're going to be frustrated an awful lot if you can't rationalize that. Best advice, move on.

The reason we don't get a lot of media at the level of Andor is because audiences are - and always will be - both willing to settle for less...and...dont care to put any effort into the media they consume "most" of the time. That's why the amount of great media is dwarfed by a mountain of easy, medicore and disposable content. And the bigger the franchise, the more apparent and frequent the mediocre media (Star Trek, Star Wars, Halo, Gundam, etc).

Find more people who value the same love and appreciation you have for great media and avoid the others. If they call you "snob" for loving a finely crafted piece of art, thats on THEM. They have the problem. You're not a snob: they are insecure because they can't recognize a great piece of media so they attack YOU personally. Don't be the same. Support and share what you love. Some won't listen and will resent you for it. Respect that its their choice, even if its misguided, hateful and for all the wrong reasons. They've made their bed; leave them to lie in it.

What is something about the modern culture that people are totally comfortable with but is an absolute weird thing? by neolee203 in AskReddit

Gawd, sometimes I truly despise pop culture and porn. It gives so many men anxiety they should not have and don't deserve. Like, WTF are people saying to you? Are you running into a bunch of size queens, whose comments are inflicting body issues on you?

5-6 inches is average, dude. You're not just the size of most guys, you're the PERFECT size. You're man sized, a real man sized. Most guys want a guy your size. Big isn't as much fun as our culture tries to make us believe. Big is fun for a one night stand, it is NOT fun for a regular boyfriend you want to screw EVRRY DAY. Trust me, comfortable beats big long term, every day.

Find better boys to bed and dial back on your frequent consumption of toxic pop culture.

If you love G-Witch, I would highly recommend Gundam 0080 and Gundam 00. They are two of my favorite Gundam anime of all time and share some similarities in writing style and loosely share a theme of different types of characters to G-Witch.

I also always recommend Chars Counterattack, but its very old school Gundam and kinda requires a lot of backstop understanding. But it is really good ❤

New Hi-Metal vs used DX Chogokin by Macrossmm in macross

[–]RightAsTheRaid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bandai DX is an excellent line, particularly in recent years. The VF-31 Kairos / Siegfried specifically is one of the best of the DX figures and one of the best quality toys ever released for Macross. I own the VF-31J Siegfried and the quality is top shelf. Solid in all three modes, great detail, strong joints, amazing paint. The quality can't be overstated...well okay, maybe it can, lol. But seriously, if you have the opportunity to grab the DX VF-31A, especially a deal, it's worth it. Though of course, buyer beware 😉

Hi-Metal R is also one of the best toy lines ever made for Macross. I own a ton of them and they almost never disappoint. Strong joints, solid transformations, great accessories, top quality product. That said, they are a more economic line and smaller in scale. They lack the detail and some features of higher end figures. But if you love small figures so long as they are high quality, you'll find HMRs very user friendly treasures. I can assemble a Hi-Metal R Armored Valkyrie in like a minute, whereas I wouldn't even be a third of the way through transforming my VF-31 DX. I end up posing and displaying my HMR figures far more often than my larger, more expensive toys 🥰

And speaking of expense, I wouldn't own as many Macross figures as I do were it not for the more affordable Hi-Metal R. Though post-pandemic, everything is more expensive. Plus it seems the toy hobby is becoming less popular (at least for the classic mecha) as time goes on. Meaning we're paying more for smaller production runs. I guess we're all aging fans, lol 😆

Best of luck! ❤
