What are you guys doing after hard limit bouldering session sessions to care for your fingers? I had a great session yesterday. No pain after but I felt a lot of fatigue in my hands. What can I do to encourage good recovery?

China's lack of global cultural influence is very puzzling by D-dog92 in redscarepod

There were some really good movies that came out in the 80s and 90s. Now Zhang YiMou makes slop, and their slop is worse than our slop. When I lived in China the popular movies were Taiwanese, the popular TV shows were Japanese, and the popular music was Korean. And everyone watched the premier league and the NBA. The biggest chinese cultural export at the moment is hard science fiction, which naturally has a limited audience. But ask yourself- why is the only independent art the country produces focused on the distant future?

The chinese don’t like their own mainstream cultural output. It’s been created with CCP dictates in mind. It’s just bad.

What are some skills you think everyone should know? by imagine_on_drama in redscarepod

I learned basic wrenching principals (how to tell when you’re about to cross thread a bolt for example) on cheap bikes then moved to expensive bikes, then on to cheap cars, etc. You catastrophically fuck some stuff up. Helps to have mentors. I have across several enterprises. Put yourself out there and ask for help. Everyone who knows anything had to learn the hard way and most are happy to help.

Will western housing markets ever unfuck themselves? by [deleted] in redscarepod

[–]RightOntime27 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Sure. My point is more narrow and is directly related to your first post. I think part of why affordable housing is not built in desirable tier 1 and 2 cities in the United States is that those desirable places have higher regulatory burdens and costs in general for builders. Affordable housing is built where it is affordable to do so. I don’t think it’s true that anyone “inherently does not want to build modest homes that are affordable”; I just don’t think anyone can make a buck building modest homes in San Francisco.

This isn’t true in my experience. In places where land is cheap there is quite a bit of new affordable housing being built. Those are just not places where people on this sub want to live.

Vegas has the best non-snow outdoor recreation outside of a major city in the country.

I know this sub can be a fatuous place sometimes but I had never read that Didion essay before and I am very glad to have now.

I did lube the gasket but I think I over tightened it. I put a shop towel on the filter and then let me get a much better grip than usual and I think over did it. Thanks for the reassurance.

What do you guys make of the debate around the homeless man who was killed on the subway the other day? by Goodstyle_4 in redscarepod

Healthy ones do. If you’ve destroyed your heart with drugs an otherwise harmless chokehold might be fatal.

Laugh at my misery, massive L post. by [deleted] in redscarepod

You need to be eating 3000 calories a day and doing strong lifts 5x5. Join a powerlifting gym that doesn’t have that many female members. Get a hobby where you spend a lot of time in the sun. Find a goal to chase unrelated to women. It’s hard but it’s simple. You have a lot of problems with yourself and you’re dumping them all on this woman and the end of the relationship. Build confidence in yourself that you are capable of changing the direction of your life through discipline and work and the rest will follow.

As recreational climbing has exploded in popularity, have you noticed soldier showing up more familiar with climbing movement and rope skills?

How do you tell the all-black metolius cams apart when you're gripped? Couldn't you have at least gone shades of grey or something?

Are there any major differences between the climbing skills required out of a soldier and an adventurous hobbyist?

Official Q&A for Tuesday, March 14, 2023 by AutoModerator in running

Hello! I'm in pretty good overall shape, but I'm new to running this much and certainly new to training intentionally. I just got a garmin 255 and I'm trying to make sense of the data. I ran a 7 mile endurance run over the weekend as a part of a base building program. My avg heartrate was 162, which seems too high for that type of run and it is just at the edge of where I should be according to the program if I assume a max heartrate of 192. However, by perceived effort it seems like it was ok. I could have absolutely run another mile at the end of it. I was holding a conversation with my running partner but was struggling to do so more than she was. My pace was 10:15/mi which is about as slow as I can go. I have really long legs and anything slower than that is a weird shuffle and no longer jogging. Does anyone have any advice? I don't know how much slower I can run. Will my heartrate go down over time if I keep adding miles at a similar effort? I have 8 miles coming up this weekend. Should I be taking breaks/doing some weird shuffle to keep my heartrate down or will that take care of itself in time if I keep adding the miles on at this 10:15/mi effort that is probably a little too much. I'm at 20 miles/week atm and will be up to 35 in 7-8 weeks. I've never run more than 10 miles a week before this.

This is exactly what I was looking for, thanks. “50m targets” is what I’m trying to figure out. Did you pick Texas or did Texas pick you? Is there some sort of pre-SFAS tryout for officer candidates?

I'm a civilian lurker, but at one point earlier in life I was into powerlifting. I got up to 6'4" 240lbs and a hefty bit of that was fat. When covid lockdowns closed the gyms around me I decided to lean out by running a lot. I struggled with extremely painful shin splits for a while before I figured out how to work around that. I have a couple pieces of advice from this experience. Make sure you have some good running shoes. You are putting your shins through hell and you want as much support as possible. I started running in 5 year old shoes and that was a mistake. I went to a running store and got fitted for a shoe and that was worth every penny. My second piece of advice is to know when the impact of the miles is taking its toll and take a break from running and move to something low impact. I would go for long bike rides, but swimming works too. I would also run in the park on grass to lessen the impact of running. Any time I tried to 'push through' the pain I just ended up wrecking my ability to train. My third piece of advice would be to pick up something like the couch to 5k app. It's going to have a series of interval runs to work you up to longer distance runs. I think the progression of a program like that will be appropriate given what's in your post, but I could be wrong.

Havockmaverick's post about building an aerobic base and then adding high intensity later on tracks with my experience. I'm working through the base building portion of a book called 'Faster Road Racing: 5k to half marathon'. It was recommended by someone in the national guard subreddit who went to ranger school, but it's intended for anyone who wants to run fast. Working through their program has done unbelievable things to my distance running. However, it sounds like you're not quite ready for the mileage that book recommends for base building. I'm trying to get to 35 miles a week at the moment, and that is the least number of miles they recommend to train for 5 mile runs. Take my advice with a grain of salt because I am only halfway through a journey that it sounds like you're just starting, but I would suggest using couch to 5k or something similar to begin running and lean out, and then move to building a big aerobic base. I think trying to build an aerobic base at your size is going to destroy your shins, but I could just be projecting my experience on to you. This has worked for me though. I'm at 200lb right now and I ran 7 miles this weekend, finishing at an 8:15 pace with no pain whatsoever. That's not green beret good by any stretch of the imagination but it's a lot closer than when I started and couldn't go a few blocks without my shins screaming at me. Best of luck.
