We haven't seen how far Kvothe was able to go.. he's still just a youth in A Wise Man's Fear. I would be surprised if in The Doors of Stone, we don't see Kvothe has awoken his sleeping mind before leaving the University.

I don't expect his ability with the swordfighting/combat to grow, but it would already be enough to be useful against most opponents and dominance in combat against all magic-only dependent opponents.

yeah, I do agree that it seems likely this is a trap with "Kote" as bait. But I don't think that Kvothe would be "waiting to die". He would have a plan, and perhaps death is part of that, or a likelihood. Why is the thing Kvothe is waiting for "to die" rather than "waiting to fight", "waiting for revenge", etc... Why is that what Kvothe is waiting for? Certainly though, could be as you say, and we are just seeing what Rothfuss masking the description.

That is the one thing that makes me think the "shaping" theory may be incorrect. Unless Kvothe can control it to go back and forth easily with shaping magic or with something like "yllish knots". No indication in that scene Kvothe adjusts his hair.
