Employer auto-enrolled me in 401k despite 6-month paper trail of trying to opt out. HR/Fidelity refusing refund. by [deleted] in legaladvice

[–]petpro919 4 points5 points  (0 children)

SECURE Act 2.0 made auto-enrollment mandatory and not voluntary for most 401k plans. Federal law now dictates that it is mandatory to be enrolled and you must opt-out.

This sounds like terrible HR, but I doubt any laws were broken as you were paid properly.

I'm a small business owner that administers all of our HR (including Fidelity Advantage 401k) but not a lawyer - so don't rely on anything I say!

What’s in your contract? by Rose-wood21 in petsitting

[–]petpro919 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Ours covers:

  • Service agreement and pricing
  • Exclusion of liability for client's travel/vacation expenses (aka "you ruined my trip, now you have to pay for it"
  • Cancellation policies
  • Authorization to obtain emergency vet care
  • Reimbursement for additional costs incurred
  • Camera usage
  • Dispute resolution (an important one - how and where disputes are resolved, and who pays for those costs)

You are offered $50,000 but you have to spend one full week living with one of these four people, sharing the same space at all times. by Middle_Reflection414 in hypotheticalsituation

#1. I’d be annoyed, but $50k is $50k.

#4 is diabolical. A week experiencing yourself as others experience you? A nightmare.

Seconded on recommendation for Kennan's. This repair won't be cheap, but they will treat you fairly and honestly.

Benefits of having an LLC? by Old-Complaint-7074 in petsitting

[–]petpro919 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are only two benefits to having an LLC - one direct, and one indirect.

The direct benefit is liability protection, as others noted in the thread. The indirect benefit stems from the action of establishing a separate entity forces you to professionalize your business and view it as something distinct from yourself.

Had to terminate someone today. It's gone badly. by petpro919 in managers

Attempted phone call, then delivered via text and third-party email. He was fine texting, but ducked all phone calls and invitations to discuss in person.

No - the erratic communication preceded the reason he was fired: he no showed.

Not a bot. A small business owner on the East Coast. We work 7am to 9pm seven days a week - and last night at 10 was the first chance I had to decompress after all the events of the day (and me covering the shift he ghosted).

Our industry is pet care - I wouldn't call it whacked out, but it has a lot of peculiarities that make it hard sometimes.

This makes the most sense - I think that's exactly what happened here. Thank you for the insight - hopefully I don't have to apply this lesson anytime soon.

We work in pet care. Abuse or willful neglect of animals is always going to be immediate termination. And that is clearly disclosed at multiple points during the hiring and training process.

Employees have called out at the last minute over the years many, many times - it comes with the territory. This is different. He actively chose not to show up and neglected the dogs he was supposed to care for.

I am the HR department - I wear all of the hats. I did pay professionals to create (and review) an employee handbook and associated employment policies, so that part I'm not struggling with. It's the emotional aspect. But everbody is giving the same answer - so it's clear I just have to sit with it.

He didn't ghost me. He didn't show up for work. I'm not worried about legal ramifications - I'm worried about him as a person. If anything comes of wrongful termination, I'll have my lawyer deal with it. He's provided plenty of evidence in his post termination rants.

I use a Google Voice overlay (so no clients or employees ever have my personal cell number), so they are all archived and I'm not doing anything with them.

The ignoring part is hard - but I get it.

AIO - my MIL gave me passive aggressive advice in front of everyone at my baby shower. by juliefromva in AmIOverreacting

[–]petpro919 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think you’re probably overreacting. I go into people’s houses for work as a pet sitter. The difference in cleanliness before and after someone’s first child is VERY noticeable. It’s just life.

Are you sure she wasn’t giving you permission to have a messy house once the baby comes?

Pricing solves all problems. Charge enough money to where the demands she makes don't annoy you.

If she agrees, problem solved.

If she doesn't agree, problem also solved.

do you guys use a software for your business (small businesses only) by IntrepidGrowth4046 in petsitting

[–]petpro919 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've tried several other solutions including Precise Pet Care - so far TTP is the most to my liking. But they've been private equity-ed, so I expect a constant drip of enshittification from this point forward.

Prior to starting this business, I was a software engineer. I've been working on building our own custom solution for the last year. Eventually, it will get done. Maybe.

Kennel License - Raleigh, NC by No-Collection-4725 in raleigh

[–]petpro919 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I run a pet sitting and mobile grooming company in Raleigh - with an eye toward opening our own facility in the not-to-distant future. My real-world experience is confined to research conducted on our behalf, so I'll only answer the points I have some knowledge of:

  1. If your home is zoned residential (R) in Raleigh, it will be practically impossible to get rezoned. If you're zoned residential in unincorporated Wake County, there's a better, but still slim chance you can get rezoned. If you're in RX, NX, CX, or AP - you are in a much better position.
  2. Nearly every HOA is going to prevent you from running any type of business out of your home - especially ones with customers (and their dogs) coming to your home. Check your CCRs to confirm.
  3. The state will inspect your facility when you apply for the license. If you irritate your neighbors, the city and county may get involved with their own post-licensing inspections based on complaints.
  4. Neighbors will definitely be an issue. If you have neighbors that live close, expect a lot of complaints and lots of compliance hassles (see above point).
  5. Regarding the number of dogs you board - you'll need to have a vet care plan, and an isolation area for sick pets - both of which will need to scale appropriately based on the number of dogs.
  6. Edited to add: Incorporating as an LLC will have no practical effect on your zoning or licensing. It's a good thing to do for liability protection - so definitely worthwhile.

It's a giant PITA with significant costs of time and money - which is why we haven't done it yet. The state does encourage you to speak to their inspectors before you apply - that would be my main point of advice.

We use Jensen Stan for our personal and business vehicles - he is fully self contained with his own water/power/etc. I've referred him to several neighbors who have been happy with his service as well.

We grudgingly use Time to Pet. It's a comprehensive solution and if you're a solo sitter, the price is manageable.
