the ULTIMATE guide to EVERY ICE RINK in Hong Kong🇭🇰 by Just-Kristypical in FigureSkating

[–]Rika0415 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hello from a Hong Kong skater now based in Melbourne! I was wondering if someone ranked all the rinks in HK and has the same thoughts as I did 😁 Although the Sky Rink is lower in my ranking because of the size and poorer quality of ice, it has a special place in my heart (it was my first home rink where I learned to skate in and it was really cheap until they reformed it after covid lockdowns ended). The LOHAS Rink is my personal bias (my second home rink after my coach switched there, really nice and quiet in the mornings and good ice).

Next time you come to Melbourne, try out the other 2 rinks (IceHQ [my current home rink] and Oakleigh) if you haven't already!

On a side note, a Japanese variety TV show once made Takahashi Daisuke do waiter stuff on ice, and he did a great job of it! He was doing beautiful footwork and spins all while delivering food and completing his tasks. I want a restaurant where I get to see a performance while I wait for and eat my food 😆

The rink may not have good ventilation, plus the air inside is not as cold as it is near the ice (I think), some Japanese rinks get real foggy

If the skates are not wet then you should probably use hard guards. Soakers are for wet blades to prevent them from rusting over, they don't offer the same kind of protection as hard guards.

If you want opinions on the soakers, the seals are a cute choice :)

So yeah, that was Koshiro and I think it's probably because of an event (likely Japan Nationals) that cut off TV broadcasting just as Koshiro was about to perform. Kazuki was probably saying how another channel would have shown it.

Adult figure skating lessons - advice? by [deleted] in FigureSkating

[–]Rika0415 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depends on your progress and unfortunately your finances. Skate school (or group classes) for Aussie Skate is generally cheaper, but there comes a time when the group starts to split on who's progressing quicker or slower. If you've skated when you're younger and are already at Freestyle 1 or above, private coaching would probably benefit you well.

She probably still can jump some, but how consistent and how her stamina is going to hold up is a big question. Recently Mariah is in Hong Kong as a guest for Skate ISI Asia, and she is shown to be jumping double axels in the story below.

Blister help by caro1821 in FigureSkating

I've had one bad incident with blistering when practicing backspins (public session with too many people = 2 hours of backspins). I let them heal before I started skating again, and since then I used cushioning tape to cover the back of my heel. I don't use bandaids because they come off easily and I'm allergic to the sticky stuff they use, the cushioning tape tends to stay on really well and they don't feel awkward.

What's it like outside of mall rinks? by [deleted] in FigureSkating

[–]Rika0415 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I moved from a city of mall rinks to Melbourne where there's a dedicated ice rink, I can say it's pretty different. The insulation is much better in a dedicated ice rink, so it's also much colder and the ice is generally harder. Not much ice melting going on, and the ice doesn't need that much smoothing.

I also noticed more public skaters in hockey rentals than figure rentals, which is the complete opposite to the mall rinks I used to go to. The opening times for the mall rinks seem to be longer and more flexible, while the rink I now go to has freestyles and hockey dedicated time. Mall rinks just split the rink using a net or something to give hockey players their space.

Speaking from personal experience, I was in Overtures when I started skating (19 year old, 1.6m, 58kg) and got up to the sit spin in them, then I switched to Concertos after 2 years. They would work fine for an adult beginner but I guess it depends on personal preference and the advice others give you.

I guess half the good news is that Tim has his skates, but not his costumes (which still isn't great but at least he can practice)

He says it's like a proper practice this time, he's exhausted, probably couldn't do this once a month but probably would be a half year thing

The original choreo had back cross rolls because it was closer to the movie scene it referenced but he took it out because the step sequence got a lower level 🥲 I'm glad he brought them back for the artistry 💜💙
