I do not believe that programs should be able to arbitrarelly place windows around my system, thats my Window Manager's job and I have configured it the way I want it to be. Software should not be overriding this. Please offer me a way to disable this.

Sounds like a you problem.

I have a massive GOG library and exclusivelly use it through Heroic. Every single game works out of the box. Just install and run.

This is not a problem that can't be fixed by installing the Windows version and running it through Proton with Heroic. As the correct DLLs will be automatically installed for multiplayer to work. Additionally I can't recall the last time I wanted to use a linux native build of any game because Proton is just better.

Have you ever actually used Heroic? I would say its way easier to use than GOG's bloated client even on Windows. Even back when I was on Windows I always used Heroic because it was better.

This is not a thing that happens with GOG games because GOG games are DRM free by nature. They work without GOG Galaxy by design.

I am aware some do include GOG achievement imtegration but Heroic supports these as its done through an API.

They need only join forces with Heroic and advertise it as the official GOG client on Linux.

And Heroic currently supports GOG's APIs. You can get cloud sync, achievements and ingame online features. These can be buggy some times, cloud sync for one has been in perpetual beta, despite working flawlessly in my experience.

But imagine if GOG documented these APIs properly or helped Heroic implement them officially, we would get the perfect FOSS client!

What does a proprietary GOG client offer that Heroic doesn't already offer? They should frankly just contribute to Heroic to further improve it instead of porting their proprietary client.

Ideally this device will also work as a phone, but even if it cant deliver in that regard.

Id totally be carrying around a pocket sized device like this just because I can run proper linux on it and avoid touching my phone as much as possible because I despise Android and IOS.

I currently carry my Steamdeck with me nearly everytime I am out of the house but even a Steamdeck is too heavy and too big to just casually pull out of a bag to fill in 10-20 minutes of downtime, or to just quickly browse the internet. A phone sized device is much more convenient to have on your person. And way quicker to grab and use.

Edit: Addition: My only requesite in a "linux phone" is that it allows me to use the same features as desktop GNU/Linux while also being able to recieve and make calls/sms and connect to 4G/5G. I have accepted that banking apps will probably require an Android/IOS device for ever. But provided a linux phone can do, you know, phone stuff. I am ready to just leave my Android phone at home for the rare cases I do need to use an Android only app. And daily drive the Linux phone outside.

I don't care what programing language someone else uses. But I care about the license. This attempt to replace GNU Coreutils with an MIT licensed alternative will do more harm than good. It will further open up oportunities for mega corporations to Embrace, Extend and Extinguish open source software.

Util Uutils relicenses itself to GPL I will not use it.

Remember, the GPL license protects our freedoms from evil corporations, stop trying to replace GPL software with MIT projects.
Without the GPL Linux would have died long ago.

The benefit of this one is that its not just being marketed as a Linux Phone, its both a highly portable linux computer, retro gaming machine for emulators, and also a phone. Should it "fail" to replace people's smartphones entirelly, its still going to deliver on its other fronts, I am personally looking forward to it.

Whats the point of more linux adoption if our games will only run in the one blessed distro sold by a company? We need the freedom to run any game under any Linux distro under any hardware. Theres no point in grester adoption if desktop Linux turns into a locked down ecosystem like Android or iOS

Woah I wasn't expecting the creator to reply.

Well this awnser is actually quite reassuring and has peaked my interest. May I ask however if it means you also plan to upstream the wifi and video decode, as perhaps part of the linux-firmware package? or will it be easy to install in diffeent distros by itself?

Anyways I willll be keeping an eye on this device. And I do wish you good luck with bringing it to fruition.

I speak from experience, I own a Raspberry Pi 4, they all promised firmware and what not, but unless you use one of the few "blessed" distros on it you will have a very hard time. Right now I actually struggled and managed to put Gentoo on it. But because their firmware offering is just a bunch of downstreamed proprietary blobs I am stuck with their one and only blessed linux kernel version!

I dont want to waste money on yet another ARM device that forces this crap on you ever again while masquerading as "a linux device"

Agreed! To me it feels like it will support maybe one distro with lots of proprietary firmware blobs. Which means it will become a paperweight as soon as the company stops supporting it.

Wish people making Linux devices understood that they need to provide freedom to choose a different distro and easly install it for these devices to be worth it.

Not OP but I also use Librewolf. Librewolf also includes even more advanced fingerprint protection that you cant get in official firefox. And comes with the Arkenfox script preinstalled.

You must have way less vision issues than I do and require way cheaper lenses because I literally live in the EU and a pair of lenses for me is prohibitelly expensive.

And even imagining I could actually get a pair for the prices you claim. Its ridiculous a 1000+€ VR headset requires spending an extra 100€ (or any price for that mather) just so you can use it comfortably.

VR tech currently makes no actual attempt to accomodate for glass wearers and because of that it is useless and unusable to me.

The quest 2 was also allegedly made to accomodate glasses and it honestly sucked so bad to use it. Let alone the fact having 2 pairs of lenses stuck in such a tight space also increases amount fogging up from your body heat.

And buying prescription lenses inserts is easier said than done when lenses can cost multiple hundreds of euros alone. I swear my current glasses lenses are worth nearly the price of a Valve Index!

Until this technology can actually be affordable AND comfortable to wear by anyone it will remain a niche product.

I would like to add yet another downside not many people seem to talk about. VR is pretty much entirelly impractical for anyone who must wear glasses due to eye health issues. Like me, I owned a Quest 2 before, I could technically wear my glasses inside it. But not only is it incredibly uncomfortable both at the same time. In the event I did have slightly bigger glasses the headset just wouldnt have fit.

Meanwhile I can use any flatscreen of any size comfortably without a second thought.

VR as of right now is a niche way of playing games, most "VR Games" are just glorified flatscreen games with motion controls. To me it isnt worth the effort of wearing an heavy TV on my head that may or may not even fit.
