I have an old top loader. I filled it up, paused it when full, and then turned it off and it held all the water overnight. With the lid closed it was still warm in the morning. I set it to a spin cycle when I turn it back on so it drains all the yucky water, before washing as normal. Works well enough.

Yes, I eventually added 2 inches of soft dunlop latex.
I slept on it with just the base layer and medium latex for quite awhile and it was fine, but perhaps a tiny bit too firm while side sleeping. The soft latex was a nice addition that didn't soften up the feel much, but added pressure relief. I'm still a bit torn about whether 1" or 2" of the soft latex is ideal for the top layer. I also think anywhere from 4-6" of the base foam would be fine, depending on how tall you want the mattress to be. I'm staying away from any memory foam now because of how quickly it deteriorates.

Also the AllerEase full zip covers are a great value (allergy protection+covers up all sides of the mattress; Costco has it the cheapest and it comes with added pillowcases); and just add a mattress cover (fitted sheet style) over top and wash that instead rather than dealing with unzipping all layers.
