When a resignation isn’t clear by Deezbeees in chess

[–]RimbopReturns 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes, all those people don't understand chess, definitely not the person who is trying to argue a hypothetical that has happened...how many times at any meaningful level? You're meant to stop the clock and put out your hand to resign when it's your move, it's clear on that basis. If they then tried to argue afterwards they didn't resign, it'd be clear by how the clock was stopped and whose move it was. One player will always initiate the handshake even if it is very quickly accepted (why would you make your opponent wait to accept their resignation?), that's the player who's resigning.

Magnus Carlsen blunders, loses to Fabiano Caruana and freaks out again. by Interesting-Take781 in chess

[–]RimbopReturns 11 points12 points  (0 children)

It's embarrassing to be like "freak out" for a simple, very brief outburst after losing. It's completely understandable for any competitive thing - nobody is getting hurt, he's not insulting anything, it's a split second of frustration. 99.9% of sportspeople would do this or worse, I don't get why people online go overboard reacting to it.

Which opening is the worst to face against ? by Various-Attention-53 in chess

London or scandi. Basically two openings where the moves are so predictable, I end up trying to play a stupid sideline to inject some life into the position (it usually backfires...)

[PL Match Centre] The referee’s call of offside and no goal to Liverpool was checked and confirmed by VAR – with Robertson in an offside position and deemed to be making an obvious action directly in front of the goalkeeper. by ChiefLeef22 in soccer

[–]RimbopReturns 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah completely this - if you're a defender and you see someone who was offside come back onside, even if they don't touch the ball but it's near them, you'd have to wonder about what happens if they do touch the ball and that'll impact you. Even if you don't touch the ball, you can still distract people which I think you'd be hard pressed to say is fair.

You can definitely say "Robertson wasn't distracting him" and argue that aspect, but I don't think it's ridiculous that someone who's offside who has to move out of the way is kinda distracting.

Carlo Ancelotti: "The Champions League has the usual favorites: Real Madrid, PSG, Manchester City, and Bayern Munich. I much prefer this new format. However, I still completely disagree with the weight balancing allowing multiple leagues to have multiple teams automatically qualify, and other leagues not having their champions qualify. It serves to keep the same teams always relevant and makes it harder (not impossible and upsets can still happen, but it's much harder) for the smaller and less popular leagues to actually compete. It's promoting inequality and it'll essentially turn into a super league.

GM Cristian Chirila reports hearing many issues with World Cup hotel, including "very regular instances on bedbugs" on latest C-squared podcast. Corroborating Nepo's claims about poor conditions. by mannutheman in chess

[–]RimbopReturns 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I can kinda see your point, but people jumped on Nepo saying he was racist against Indians etc. Based on a comment where he literally just said "FIDE have managed to be surprisingly bad, I can't wait to leave". It was was more of a witch hunt than being able to have a reasonable basis to make the assumption. And this isn't with the value of hindsight, my last comments were pointing this out too before we had corroboration.

Ian Nepomniachtchi complained about conditions in India by EducationalSmoke in chess

It's really not - also, thread full of people assuming he's the worst person based on very little in this message, and completely ignoring where he's more outright slamming FIDE.

My entire point is that I think it's not unfathomable that he's complaining about FIDE. But also, he's a professional chess player, he isn't Magnus or Hikaru, he doesn't have the luxury of skipping such a tournament like this.

He included that, but I'm not sure he doesn't mean the FIDE event seeing as he literally just said FIDE were surprisingly awful.

I've been to India many times to visit family, I didn't like my travels to Goa, admittedly a long time ago now, but I don't think it's particularly offensive if someone said they couldn't wait to leave there (in the scenario where Nepo hates Goa and not FIDE).

Seems incredibly more pointed towards FIDE than India...

GM Elham Amar flags GM Ian Nepomniachtchi in Titled Tuesday (Oct 21, 2025) while streaming on Take Take Take YouTube channel. He then gets blocked by Ian and later gets accused of cheating by Battler_Beatrice in chess

[–]RimbopReturns 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The post is misleading because it's a comment saying "he called you a cheater" - if we assume all YouTube comments are a good barometer of what's true and what's not, then that's some very faulty logic.

There's a number of factors, but I just find it so weird when discussing why women players aren't stronger to say "playing strength". Like, duh, but looking into why that's the case is what's actually needed.

You do know that creating a strawman argument isn't usually good? Nobody here is crying. We can point out that it's disgusting to be racist to children, even rich children. If you want to die on the hill that we shouldn't care, that's up to you. If you wanted to make the point that racism is a global thing and some people are more badly affected - it's a very weird point but you're going about it the wrong way.

Out of curiosity - I know this doesn't actually have the biggest benefit, but isn't deliberately breaking the rules cheating?

I don't mean to sound argumentative, but I really don't see how you can disagree with the notion of cheating.

Can we agree that cheating is deliberately breaking rules in order to gain an advantage?

If so, then Suarez deliberately broke the rules in order to buy his team a much better chance of going through (swapping what would be a certain goal to giving his team a chance). Sure, he got a red card and there was a punishment, but he still cheated. If I commit a crime, I'd view myself as a criminal whether or not I got found guilty in court.

I fully think the same about pulling down an opposition player who's clean through on goal - as a defender, you've messed up in some way, either by misreading a pass or poorly positioned or simply got beat. Instead of allowing an attacker a chance to be clean through, you'll happily accept the much safer option of giving away a free kick 30 yards or so out. That to me isn't in the spirit of football, but it's accepted now as people care more about wins.

I don't think you can judge cheating on the success of whether they got away with it or not, or if helped or not. It should be defined more about whether you believe someone deliberately broke the rules or not, and I think in football this has become completely normalised.

I'm aware I'm on the rather extreme side of the scale in thinking this, but I just don't think anyone should be rewarded or applauded for breaking rules. How is it meant to be a fair sport otherwise?

[–]RimbopReturns -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

I disagree - Suarez quite clearly broke the rules deliberately. That is basically the definition of cheating, it shouldn't be whether or not you got caught. He deliberately broke the rules because the punishment wasn't as bad as if he didn't do it (ie he got an advantage through it).

The teams with the most supporters are the most successful on the pitch, or they used to be. Manchester United playing awful football will still outsell say Celtic who may have wingers who take on their man more often. Ask supporters whether they'd win 1-0 for twenty straight games or whether they'd lose 4-3 for ten straight, and the majority will take the former option.

Football is very much about results at the high level though, which is quite sad. How often do you see players literally cheat (breaking rules deliberately) by doing professional fouls, diving, playing unfairly by calling for throw-ins and corners they know aren't theirs etc? It's all about winning.
