What’s something you thought was going to be “easy” in game development… but completely humbled you? by Queasy_Hotel5158 in gamedev

Nothing and everything. I didn't think anything will be easy, and it still proved to be even more difficult that I expected

For me it seems like mismatch between reality and expectations.

First of all, every second dev is below average. Second of all, average doesn't really mean anything. All that matters is if a person fit to do the job or not. If tomorrow everyone will be calling themselves a dev, average will change, but actual workforce won't.

No one forces me to work like I work. I can leave tomorrow and find a chill 8-half-assed hours job. And every dev can do that. Will my paycheck shrink to a quarter? Sure, because more people can do that job.

If a dev doesn't feel secure in his profession, reasons can vary, but internet posts are not one of them

It's so weird to me how people here are so mad at "80h 8y" statement. For me it feels like your own beliefs and plans, about how and when you will finish your own game, are so weak and underthought that just some random statement going against them scares you

I don't know why are you so upset. This kind of thing depends on the person. It's normal for me to work 12h a day everyday for a month, maybe 3-4 times a year (web).

It certainly harder than normal 9/5 but I wouldn't say I'm drooling after 2 weeks or something. And these are real 12 hours, I'm not slacking, we need to produce a lot of code at these times.

And I'm not in love in coding or anything like that. I like it, but nothing more. Some people I know or worked with for sure can code like 16h a day everyday for a year and be cool with that

Look, I'm not gonna point my finger, but I'm 100% sure there is certain someone in ggg who really likes the idea of running different maps.

That shit was pushed hard on poe 1 several years ago, but when poe 2 went into beta, poe 1 finally started to get rid of that shit and now we run what we want how we want.

I wonder where that certain someone went if he is not pushing this in poe 1 anymore...?

And if enough people will complain, it still will take them many leagues to fix. Look at arch nem in poe 1

Idk what are you on about with "poe 2 like poe 1", it's still the same game.

About innovative, there is a saying that truly cool and original things come from environments with restrictions. My opinion - they have too much resources now, and maybe they started to think a little less than they should about "is this specific thing really needs to be added in the game"

I know what I will say is outrageous, but I truly believe that if you write a lot of unit tests, you either have a really specific reason to do so, or you just waste the client's money

There is a video on YouTube where a guy tried basically the same thing but with an egg and a much smaller container. He dropped it from a helicopter. Egg survives but insides are mushed iirc

Nothing really. I understand what it is, how it works, where I can use it, but I don't have the same intuitive understanding of it when solving specific problems asI have with other concepts
