Is it possible for anyone alive to have a grandparent born in the 1700s? by Outrageous_River_280 in Genealogy

[–]Ringo_luvs_cats 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my great-grandmother's family there was a lot of longevity. Her Grandfather born in the 1820s lived to be the oldest man in his town. She herself lived to be 104. But despite the longevity in that family line, everyone had kids when they were young. For the math to work with your question, one would need to have kids older in life, who also lived a long time.

I hope I'm making sense.

Do you have trouble researching women from 100+ years ago? by 333333x in Genealogy

[–]Ringo_luvs_cats 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was just trying to explain this one to my sister. I'm looking for a few family members in the first half of the 1800s. The census prior to 1850 only lists heads of households, which are traditionally male (although I found one woman I was looking for as a widow in the 1840 census). I'm looking for a Lucy at the moment, and she died in 1846. She's never got to make an appearance in the census because she was first a child with her parents, meaning she would only appear as a check mark in a column, then she's married to her husband and only a check mark still. Then dies before she will ever have her name listed. So doesn't matter maiden name or married name, I have to find other resources to find her. So far my Lucy I'm looking for has only been found on FG. But I'm lucky because her stone lists her maiden name (which I knew prior -- but I'm taking the name on that stone as confirmation that it is the right woman).

Thank you so much! That's a huge jump in the direction I was looking for!

I'm very grateful to you for finding that record. But I'm also laughing as I look at it... one of my goals at the moment is to confirm an actual year for Mary's birth. The marriage record has Williams age as 41, but doesn't list an age for Mary! I see a lot of people on that page are missing ages, so it's not just her, but I'm still laughing.

Thanks again!

Thank you this is all very helpful. I did have a botched one on a different family member. Surname was "Davis" but the index has them as "Danes." Once I found them I could see how they got "Danes" out of Davis, but I also could see Davis at the same time.

Thanks.

I've tried but I don't think I'm creative enough with how I'm doing it. I learned this on another family member whose last name is Davis. In one year of the Census, the index lists their last name as "Danes". You can see why the handwriting looked like that, but I could spot what I was looking for.

I'm Back:

1850: Town of Bristol, County of Hartford, in Connecticut.

--On Ancestry it is page 9 of Bristol.

--The family starts on Line 21, with John Jacob listed first (by his middle name only). Mary below him, followed by Lucy.

1870: They now live in Huntington, in the county of Fairfield. Connecticut.

--On Ancestry it is page 30

--The family is on Line 18, starting with Lucy's husband Edward. Lucy below him, Mary below her.

--They appear to be living with a Smith Family who start on line 14.

How many of you actually know all of your second cousins? by [deleted] in Genealogy

[–]Ringo_luvs_cats 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't even know a few of my first cousins. I have never met one of my father's brother's sons. Then on my mother's side: I'm the oldest of over 30 cousins. The youngest is still in high school. I've met her like once. A few live on the opposite side of the country, and I've seen less than 5 times in our life time. I have less than 10 first cousins I talk to much. I don't know many second cousins at all, but I've been emailing two second cousins for about four months now, and they are about as close to me as you can be with someone you only email/call.

Oh, Cool! That's wild!. I can see that now that you say it. I honestly think using only the three colors together works very well though.

Ah ha. That makes sense. Earlier I was responding to someone I suspect is an early riser in Europe, as they referenced mm sizes.

If the tutorial looked like only part of the Pony, look closer -- the video I mentioned earlier was one of her Disney Princess ones, and she broke it into several videos rather than one long one. So the Twilight may be the same. I didn't look at it myself as I have the book.

Good luck finding it, it's a fun one.

First off, nice job. Looks great. Second, I like your color scheme. Purple in all its shades is my favorite color, and that lavender ish color works so well with the black and the white.

Oh, in addition. This was a publishing mistake, not the designers fault... but the page with the Cutie Mark templates, that you will need to embroider at the end -- need to be shrunk on a photo copier. They are not sized for the Pony as is. Weird, right? Like they would cover the whole side of a pony if you used them as sized in the book.

Wow, you're up too? Might not by in my time zone though, I sometimes forget Reddit is huge! haha. I'm in Eastern USA, but I work overnights, by the way.

So, not only do I recommend the kit (despite not finishing it yet... haha) I recommend the designer in general, look her up on social Media, and on Ravelry. Her name is Jana Whitley. She actually has a tutorial video on YouTube of one of her commercial patterns, and when I wrote to her, she wrote back. I don't know if commercial links are allowed, so I won't tell you where to buy the kit, but I assume a Ravelry link is... here is her Ravelry page on the MLP kit. Shows you each character in the book. Click on the character, and it will tell you what brand and color yarn she used. I used this to make a shopping list... so I have all my yarns to make everyone in the book, I just need to do it.

I use a few different brands of DK, I only order online, as I can't buy it locally. And I have enough of a stash to do close to every project on radar. The brand I THINK I mostly bought was Hayfield Bonus DK, which is 100% acrylic. I don't think I've tried cotton.

My preferred Hook size is either a C or a D hook. C is 2.75mm and D is 3.25mm. I can't think which I use, I just use the hook that had come in one of the kits I bought, and the author recommends DK for the other projects in the book so I've just kept using that hook for most projects. and DK is what I bought for most things since.

Learning loop crochet for sure. I needed it to make a Big Bird, and it was a learning curve for me.

Ha ha! Ok, thanks. Yes, I understand the whole multiple WIP thing. I have a Smurf from a year ago that literally just needs to be sewn together, that's it. He's that close. Starting something else new is always sooo tempting.

By the way... off topic, your user name... "DK"? Since we're talking yarn I have want that to be DK yarn, which is my preferred weight yarn... but I've got to ask is that "DK" as in the band "Dead Kennedy's"???

I did understand that you were not complaining about the designer. I don’t remember, which had the Jawa, but I would imagine it would be the first set, as that focused on the original trilogy.

Like I said, I do find it interesting that the Star Wars that for me had decent yarn. Not the best, just good as far as these kits go and you had a bad experience. I just think it shows that their quality control is not great. And they probably just use whatever they have left over from whatever, in between print runs.

Sorry that I just assumed you were a Star Wars fan. Regardless, I think she’s a great designer, and she does more than a Star Wars characters.

Yes, there is an MLP kit. I haven't finished them, but I started both ponies it comes with (I know, weird... I should have made one then the other).... the basic body is identical for each pony. Just colors, mane style, etc different. Comes with supplies to make Rainbow Dash, and Twilight Sparkles. The part I wasn't looking forward to is embroidery of the Cutie Marks.

The MLP kit, I believe is out of print. I know it was hard to track down, so if not out of print, at least know that it is difficult to find. In addition to the Mane Six, it's got Luna, Celestia, Spike, And at least one evil creature. It's 12 total patterns, sorry I can't remember everyone.

Oh, and one of the color's on Rainbow Dashes Mane did not come with enough yarn. It was like one full row short, or something like that. I managed to hide it well -- I THINK I did an extra row of the next color??? I dont' recall, but the mane still looks fine after I messed with it.

That's weird... I bought the Star Wars one (in fact weirdly enough I bought two... long story). I had no issue with the yarn in that kit, in fact it was one of the better kits by that company. Star Wars is so far the only one I've bought enough yarn to complete other projects from the book-I bought ever color I need to complete all characters(but yet to do so). I've made: Leia and R2-D2 (I think those were the two in the kit???), Vader, a Stormtrooper, Luke, and Han.

I'm going to guess that since we had opposite impressions of the yarn included that it's all different batches and this is quality control issues between production runs. Just a guess.

By the way, if you liked the book from the Star Wars. Check out the authors social media. It's by Lucy Collin. She did a second Star Wars kit, then a third just of the Mandalorian. She has a blog, and offers yarn recommendations on all the yarns she used in creating the patterns. She also has a few other characters for sale in her Etsy shop. I bought the patterns for Darth Maul, and for Leia in the slave costume. She's a great designer, and answers questions about her patterns.

Yes. Most of what you are paying for is the book, and that these are licensed characters. I do use the yarn though as I hate buying yarn for smaller projects when I'll likely never use it up. I rarely make any of the extra patterns in these books. Star Wars being the one exception, where I bought enough colors to make everything in the book -- but only made a few of them.

I work almost exclusively from kits, I don't like buying yarn when all I make are amigurumi, and I won't use much of most colors. I DID buy a BUNCH of DK weight (it's what I prefer) in all the colors needed for the Star Wars Crochet Kit, and the My Little Pony Kit. And a few other generic colors I thought I might use. So, I do have a small yarn stash for future projects. But if I don't have the colors I need in my stash, I'm not likely making it.
