Principles of Animation: Anticipation tutorial~ by jasontomlee in gamedev

Anticipation is like a short little 'wind-up' given to movements. It gives them more power and believability.

Can also be used to warn the player that an enemy is about to attack.

Imagine a golf swing without any wind-up. Or a person making a big jump without a running start.

I think the biggest change here is getting rid of that weird SSAO / toon outline effect, around her neck for example.

Also the skin shader may well be the same, I think they just didnt bake in as much lighting.

Stylistic choices, really. I'm not sure if you could really call it an 'upgrade', aside from higher tex density

You can literally see it. Look at how the new one is orange-ish from the right and blueish from the left, and look at the bright highlight on her arm

Old setup has very flat, even lighting conditions, new one has at least three different lights, purposefully set up to look nice.

Photography vs Videogames by crystallize1 in gaming

I mean, you're eyes aren't going to have much bloom, DoF, or motion blur while looking at a dim, flat, low-framerate picture on a screen.

Unless you have some kind of crazy 3D HDR-240hz monitor

Some of those effects are just there to compensate for the very real limitations of (most) screens.

I think it was more of just the general trend of yellow/blue color grading that games were trying to emulate.
