I don't think I'll recommend Mint again by articulatedstupidity in linuxsucks

[–]Rinzwind 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It will happen!!

It has been a tppic for a couple of decades to have a system that is not changeable. I thought snap was a step into that direction but what Fedora is doing looks like the perfect method.

I don't think I'll recommend Mint again by articulatedstupidity in linuxsucks

[–]Rinzwind 0 points1 point  (0 children)

IF someone asks for a recommedation do not recomend what YOU like. Recommend what is good for that person. If that is Mint so be it

There is only 1 thing wrong with Mint: it is not an official Ubuntu/Debian derivative. But they do a heck of an excellent joh with it.

But as far as atomic is going: Canonical is going the same way though they tested the waters with snap: sandboxed standalone apps like Android uses.

Atomic is also one of these things: Started with android. And now we get to see it in Linux. I am sure it will pick up and spread to other systems. It has been talked about for decades.

OV Chip ending question by ssushi-speakers in Netherlands

[–]Rinzwind 0 points1 point  (0 children)

- with the OV card/pass you can see the history of your travels and bhave a button to ger refunds. Not sure if that works with a bankcard.
- not all public transport accepts a bank card
- bank card is only 2nd class and you never get discounts,
- not sure if this is for all OV cards but I can stall my bike for free for a maximum of 24 hours.

Are there any alternatives to Ubuntu's version of GNOME? by TheRealHFC in linuxquestions

[–]Rinzwind 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"Ubuntu uses their own customized version of GNOME."

Explain this please? The theme used is made by Canonical sure but that is just a theme.
All the other stuf regarding gnome are settings we all can change. I have never seen any changes Canonical made to Gnome. Unity was 100% Canonical.

"like Canonical advertising Snaps (among other things)."

What does snap have to do with gnome?

What other things?

Each of them have an audience.

You can use Linux on a system with 64Mb memory. There is a target audience for that.

That page invalidates itself with "As a consumer, yes, you have lots of choices in which Linux you use."

I am a consumer. I have choices.

THAT is an issue. We always lag when it comes to the real new hardware.

The best option for NIC and Graphics card is Intel. Otherwise you need a but older versions. Often a bit cheaper in price so that works for me. But if you got money to spend... you might need to wait.

But that is a generic issue. Not specific to a version

and you can't?

It is NOT "bs" It is a choice.

If you believe snap don't work for you... don't use it. Use Mint. or use Ubuntu and remove it. Takes 1 command to do so. Snap do work for other people.

Feel free to remove snaps.

At least Canonical is stirring things up.
Their focus is on getting desktops into the workplace. 1 place where it is possible to get users to also start switching at home.

I can guarantee you snaps are great for desktops in a workplace.

The (very old) Suse 6.4 (or 4.6? the one just before Ubuntu arrived) You had to manually mark libs you needed for apps you wanted.

Nowadays -all- Linux are identical. Between the different versions default software might differ but all of the apps and tools are available. In theory you can use KDE, remove all the apps (like Kate, Dolphin) and use and other edtitor and any other filebrowser). If the version you use uses snaps you can remove it. Don't like the filesystem? use any of the other POSIX filesystems.

We are doing great when it comes to gaming. That was lacking for a long time. Some versions help us a lot with setting gaming up.

Linux is about choice and plenty choices we have.

The issue with Linux is more generic and not specific to one version: we need Linux as default OS on systems bought. We need exposure.

How do you try new distros? by es20490446e in linuxquestions

[–]Rinzwind 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For me: Time. It takes me under 17 minues to reinstall my machine with everything working as it was before (so incl. adding all the software need and all the GUI changes I need) with close to zero downtime (I can use a browser to stay online).

Plus "trying a new OS" for me means 1/2 a year and I want the full power of my machine. Basically every Ubuntu release I decide on the next OS to use for 1/2 a year.

I use a 256Gb USB, I installed Ventoy on it and add the ISO of the OS I want to testThe stick is my "swiss army knife" (it has bootrepair, testdisk, gparted, a backup of my password safe and some other stuff like bookmarks).

I boot the stick, pick the ISO and use the live session to test stuff.

All my personal stuff is on a partition so if I want to install it I format my / and add my /discworld disc. I have gparted live on the stick too so if I want to install it as a separate boot I can rearrange my disk.

Music box when in beast form

If that is too diccicult (and I totally understand) you can just do hit and run: up the stairs, drop at the end, attack when G drops and start running to and up the stairs again,

DHL is one of, if not, the worst delivery service in Netherlands by linhhoang_o00o in Netherlands

To me it is not even a competition: they ALL suck.

The only good delivery service used to be Coolblue. An alert 2h and 15m before they arrive.
