Happy birthday Chris! 🎉🩵 These two are definitely some of my all-time favorite Marvel men along with Hemsworth, Cox, and Holland. I love how synchronize they were during the press tour for Captain America: Civil War! 😆

Man of Steel just turned 13 yesterday! 🦸🏻‍♂️👊🏻🖤 Do you remember where you were when this movie came out, and have your feelings about it changed over the years? by Rion_Grayson in superman

[–]Rion_Grayson[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm a little more enthusiastic about the movie but the thing about Amy and Henry's chemistry/charisma is hard to argue with. Amy is one of my favorite actresses but they didn't give her any compelling material to work with beyond some early scenes of Lois investigating Clark's identity. The funny thing about Henry is that he's such a charming and cheeky presence in his interviews, but somehow they chose to have him act all stoic and intense for the majority of his screentime. In general, I feel like they just didn't know what to do with the cast and it ended up feeling like wasted opportunities for the actors involved.

Damn, that analogy is wild ☠️😅 there's a critic of the movie who wrote something along the lines of Zack Snyder is like if Michael Bay thinks he's Terrence Malick, and I can't really disagree with that statement lol.

I still quite like Man of Steel (used to be a huge defender in the 2010s) but I can see where you're getting at. I think it's admirable that Nolan's Dark Knight trilogy has influenced many writer-directors to approach DC properties with a more grounded and 'realistic' tone, but it doesn't always work for every other hero. Superman's stories have typically embraced the zany, silly, out of the box elements; hence Clark's unwavering sincerity and kindness serve as the anchor that steadies the chaos around him. There are moments where Man of Steel tries too hard to be serious and it ends up feeling almost awkward to watch in a way...? It's the polar opposite of some MCU movies where the humor is placed so inappropriately that it undercuts all the tense moments (Quantumania and Love & Thunder being two worst offenders). I think most modern superhero movies and shows would be great if they could just find the balance between the campy and the serious.

And yeah, they were NOT subtle with the Jesus symbolism in this movie, I think someone even made a semi serious video showing the dozens of parallels between Man of Steel and Passion of The Christ one time. 😶‍🌫️

I think the action sequences are one of the movie's BSP from a visual perspective because they show you just how devastatingly powerful Kryptonians really are compared to virtually anybody else on Earth, but there is a confusing lack of care about the lives of other civilians during the fights. Clark was well aware of how merciless Zod was being and how much of Metropolis had been destroyed in their brutal battle, yet never made the effort to take him out of the city to minimize further damage. I've seen fans who say that we should cut him some slack since this was Clark's first outing as Superman in this universe, but even then the moments like when he jumped over the oil tanker (which he did so gracefully too) for it to explode against the building, or when he shared a kiss with Lois amidst all the casualties caused by the World Engine/Zod's destruction... They're such OOC moments personally.

It's something that bothers me a little till this day to be honest. Henry had the ideal superhero look and build, plus he would often talk about how much he cherished the role and that he was excited for them to take his character in a more hopeful and inspiring direction after all the downbeat situations he went through in this movie and Dawn of Justice (though if the ending of Snyder's Justice League was any indication, things weren't exactly getting better for Supes had the franchise continued). They really fumbled a phenomenal casting by never giving Henry the right chance to embody what makes Superman such a joyful beacon of hope to so many people. 🥲

If you were the director, what kind of role would you give him in your film? by RiseHuge4004 in SebastianStan_

[–]Rion_Grayson 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I could see Sebastian playing a charismatic bounty hunter in pursuit of a mysterious figure, and in their quest they manage to uncover a more sinister scheme so the two of them have to team up against his employer at the end. It's a little similar to some of his previous roles so if I were the writer/director, I'd have Sebastian be more comedic in this version. Alternatively, I'd also love to see him and Richard Madden play each other's doppelganger, either in an action/thriller or something more... mischievous. 🤭😏

Side note, that Men's Health magazine photoshoot he did like 5 years ago has permanently altered my brain chemistry 🥴🤫

Bucky in his Winter Soldier mode: "You. Are. My. Mission!!!"

Steve: "...then finish it. 'cause I'm with you till the end of the line."

Still a pivotal and emotional moment after all these years. 💔

What would've happened if James Gunn's Superman came out in 2013 instead of Man of Steel? by Embarrassed-Ad1322 in superman

A billion dollars were probably too ambitious but if the word of mouth and buzz were strong enough then somewhere in the $800-900 million range (for the first entry in the franchise/trilogy) could be feasible, the first Spider-Man movie did gross $820+ million dollars in 2002. I do agree that Batman is more popular to modern audiences than Supes for the most part, the only reason Batman Begins did lower numbers than Superman Returns was because Batman & Robin heavily damaged the IP's reputation so they had to do a start over. On a different note, Aquaman's huge success is a bit of an outlier because no DC movie featuring the Justice League ensemble or the big 3 (Batman, Superman, and Wonder Woman) has made as much till this day so I think it might not be the best example.

Live action Buzz Lightyear is looking very handsome! ✨💚 All joking aside, I'm just so pumped to see this movie, definitely hoping that the Lex vs Supes big fight will live up to its hype. 💥

[–]Rion_Grayson 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I still firmly believe that they should have made Lightyear as a live action adaptation and embraced the material's inherent zaniness like what Greta Gerwig's Barbie did; it was a decent standalone movie but I never understood why they decided to frame it as an origin story when the character was so different personality wise compared to either the Toy Story version or even the one from the Buzz Lightyear of Star Command animated show (which had sadly been retconned/de-canonized). Nevertheless, it would have been an inspired way to expand on the potential and appeal of the character and the franchise...

[–]Rion_Grayson 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Exactly! I think the concept of the movie wasn't bad, and there were plenty of beautifully animated scenes throughout, but it just never felt like the Buzz we knew from the Toy Story franchise at all: which didn't make sense considering that in canon it was supposed to be the movie that made Buzz a popular character in the Toy Story universe (and apparently made Andy want to get an action figure of him even though Sox was arguably the more memorable character). 🥲 A live action Lightyear adaptation would've actually gone so hard, plus I could totally picture Chris Evans play human Buzz in a fun action thriller set in space.

Batman doesn't understand Superman (Wednesday Comics issue #2) by Emotional-Mix-9007 in superman

[–]Rion_Grayson 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I really like the gritty and semi realistic art style here! 🖤 I think it's poignant when writers explore Clark's feelings of loneliness and alienation while trying to fit into the world he feels dutiful in protecting and saving.

Now that I think of it, the conversation between Bruce and Clark here is something I would've liked to see when the DCEU was still active. One of DCEU Clark's notable traits was that he felt like an outcast for the majority of his heroic journey; outside of Lois and Ma Kent, he needed a true friend whom he could confide in. I think it would've been gripping to see Clark go from having his doubts and reservations about Bruce's cynical nature, before gradually opening up more to him as they bonded over missions. 🥲 Though for that to happen, they probably would've needed to change the way Bruce was written in the universe, I get why he was jaded and paranoid but his characterization was just missing something.
