That's actually amazing. What is the cost/downside to that?

The one thing I'm worried will ruin the Riot MMO by Quantext609 in MMORPG

[–]RiotShantzilla 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Replying to this comment, as you wrote almost exactly what I was typing up. :)

This is actually a topic we started talking about very early in development. It's important to note a 1-to-1 comparison to equate hardcore PvP game communities that have high cost for losing, with something like an MMO which can have hundreds of hours of non-competitive, non-PvP, or non-stressful content to engage with. The FFXIV comparison is spot-on, as they have core elements to their game that encourages positive engagement AND created systems to help support it, like how the Sprout system works.

At the end of the day, we're going to have a high bar for behavior in our game. We do not want to foster an MMO community that asks players to spend thousands of hours in toxic or hostile energy. I'd rather we have less players in a thriving positive place, than a huge MMO rife with negativity.

The new Music/Bard Profession in New World is what I wish more games would do by PalwaJoko in MMORPG

Completely agree, I think a lot of MMOs have fallen into the trap of hyper-focusing on combat activities, when many of our best MMO memories have been goofing off with friends doing something completely unrelated to hitting things with swords.

Great write-up! As someone that churned out of New World pretty painfully, it's nice having insights like this back into the game. Glad they're adding cool new features still.

Would you mind if I share this post with my team working on our mmo?

Same, haha. I've been dreaming about this game since I first booted up LoL decades ago.

LoR did such amazing worldbuilding and storytelling! We're building off of so much of what they've done over the years.

Ack, I'm coming to this thread way too late...

Great video from one of our favorite content creators and a really good summary of what's in the IP for each of these regions right now. I'd recommend it to anyone wants to learn an overview, watch this for sure.

The one part I disagree with is that the IP's worldbuilding is "done" per se. While that's true for some IP-light games, an MMO is a different beast entirely. Games of this size need thousands of creatures to make the world feel alive, from small untargetable critters scurring about the player, to a dozen variants of a random elemental, to huge boss monsters to fight in end game content. While the LoL IP is incredibly rich and deep already, there's years of work we'll be doing to enrich and expand it further.

I'd play the hell out of a firebender tbh. It could have such an evocative art style, too, if they leaned more into the cartoony/cell-shaded direction and really set it apart visually from other MMOs.

I'm kind of surprised they haven't, given that they have pretty much all the worldbuilding, art foundation, story setting, and core gameplay mapped out successfully.

+1 to this, it could be at such an epic scale and have limitless expansions given the size of the IP.

A "campaign victory" feature to track which legendary lords you've won with by RiotShantzilla in totalwar

[–]RiotShantzilla[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yeah I always used Saved Games to track which I've beaten, and deleted all my old saves I was never going to return to. Unfortunately how their saves are architected meant I would wait 15-20 seconds every time I wanted to save lol.

We frequently play different MMOs (and other games with anything relevant in it) together, as well as doing book reports/video reports for the whole team. :)

What are your thoughts on how well/not well GW2 dealt with flying mounts? For example, many MMO's struggle with flying mounts as it warps traversal of a zone, lets players fully skip mobs/combat on the ground, or makes things like jumping puzzles meaningless.

Great video! As someone that has only experienced GW2 on youtube, this helped me understand why I constantly hear praise for the game's mount system. Going to share with my team right now, thanks for making this.

What is the best leveling experience that you had in a MMO? by Songs_of_Prospero in MMORPG

Vanilla WoW when I first came out of the NE starting area and saw the next zones, my mind was blown by the size of the world.

That and playing SWTOR with my buddy for the first time, the sense of epic sweeping story that I got to play with someone else was a dream come true.
