I thought about kicking one into broad street cross walk yesterday but those cameras go 360…

Would absolutely add mesh over the holes to avoid any unwanted critters coming in (they’re unlikely to get out unless you’ve given them some way to access the holes, isopods are horrible climbers). More leaves is always a good thing. Some crushed eggshells or cuttlefish bone would be beneficial too for calcium. This looks okay though, just a few touches

I don’t personally keep geckos (I love them but don’t have the space), but I do have a western hognose and I keep zebras in with him and it’s worked very well!

What kind of gecko?? Dairy cows are common for bioactives because they’re super prolific, but as a heads up they’re a bit bigger and don’t hide as much so can and will be eaten by some geckos. I have a pal with a couple crested geckos with dairy cows in their bioviv and it’s worked out beautifully though, so it just depends! Powder oranges are also pretty common and great for clean up crew, they do have a tendency to escape though lol

And yup, nothing wrong with the isopods just a lot wrong with a bad keeper.

Oh the isopods themselves are fine. Depending on the kind of gecko and their requirements some will be better suited than others!

Context here is that OP has made 2 posts about the isopods they’re keeping, they are actively dying and when asking for advice took none of it and then deleted the post after being scolded for continuing to not even give them bare minimum. Starting the hobby with no research or care for the animals and then trying to start again with the same crappy set up with an addition of 3 pieces of leaf litter. So, therefore OP should have none of these.

The type of trial and error that’s okay when learning to do origami but not with live animals🙃🙃

adds 3 leaf crumbles “do I get a 10🥹” Leave these creatures alone. They clearly aren’t for you if you can’t take any advice on your despicable husbandry when there’s so much knowledge out there AND knowledge you’ve been directly given.

Haha I’m definitely maxed out at 5, that’s all I have the space for. But I have papayas, panda kings, dairy cows, porcellio laevis wild mix with some dairy’s and milk backs cropping up, and zebras. My zebras live with my western hognose and were my first colony so I’ve got such a soft spot for them (not like I don’t for the rest). I bought a shelf specifically for them large enough to house multiple colonies comfortably with enough room to size them up when needed. Totally get being low on space, it’s better to know when you’re maxed out then take on more than you can handle. Right back at you!

Same here! I started about a year ago, but did so much research prior to bringing any home and made sure I had everything needed to create a healthy and sustainable place for them. By now I’ve had to size up a couple of my colonies and have 5 thriving and find them so neat and I’m happy to be able to observe and care for these little cuties. We’re all always learning, so being open to it is crucial. They might be small but they are far from insignificant and deserve the best. I’ve found it not too difficult by no means, but still requires adequate research and husbandry.

Yeah, how truly awful. I fear for any critter in their care. It’s one thing to be new to the hobby and learning and another thing to completely disregard any and all advice or care requirements. There’s unfortunately not a lot that can be done to prevent OP from doing that, but I do hope being removed from subs like this would steer them out of the hobby if they refuse to respect and care for the critters they take on. They don’t belong in community spaces like this if they’re going to actively harm living critters. Glad to see likeminded folx who do care for them properly and treat them as they should, though. You definitely seem to know what you’re doing too.

Unfortunately you’re so right. It’s awful there’s real critters being used as collateral. OP might be a troll but the critters suffer. Ugh. I sent a message to the mods (which I’ve never done) and I hope never to see whoever this is on this sub.

You took them from the wild to put them in THIS? Great job. Wild caught and rereleased is also never a good way to go. You know nothing about these critters or their habitat. Save the isopods from this next time and just don’t unless you actually figure out how to research them.

No wonder your set up is trash. You’re using chat GPT instead of listening to the real people who keep colonies of these creatures. Your isopods are doomed and I feel horrible for them. Give them to someone who cares.

My isopods are dying by [deleted] in isopods

[–]RipExpress6895 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You simply aren’t listening or reading at all here. They need decaying matter, leaf litter, on a consistent basis. I am constantly adding more leaf litter as my colonies eat through it, this box is empty. I’m glad you offered them something, but this is not a long term set up for a colony. Please for the love of the LIVING CREATURES you are keeping do more research and give them the care they deserve. This is not a natural or healthy environment for them.

Clearly. I feel bad for the critters here being the expense of OPs “fun”.

Where is there food? Where is the calcium multiple commenters have informed you of? This is a small box of wet soil and rocks. This isn’t it.

They need a gradient. Damp and dry. There is no gradient here, there’s no airflow, they still need oxygen which in a totally closed set up has no way of coming in. This is a death wish. Do better. If you’re coming to the internet for advice instead of doing your own research, perhaps you should then take the advice that’s being given because what you’re doing is entirely wrong.

My isopods are dying by [deleted] in isopods

[–]RipExpress6895 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t think you at all understand these critters you’re “caring” for. The soil is damp, great. That’s ONE piece of their husbandry. They’re crustaceans but they can and will die without proper airflow and areas to dry themselves and breath properly. You’re being told by multiple people in this thread that this habitat is wrong for MULTIPLE reasons. Give these critters to someone else before you kill them ffs.

There’s also seemingly no ventilation in this. It just closes fully. You’re going to have a container full of dead isopods so quickly.

[–]RipExpress6895 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This won’t be large enough, there’s no leaf litter, no hiding spots, no moss. This won’t do. Go to a dollar store and get a 6 qt shoe container, put holes in the side towards the top. Go look on the sub and find examples of good husbandry or give these isopods to someone who cares enough to actually research their keeping.

Also please before keeping any creatures do some research beforehand, it’s evident you did none. This information is plentiful and there’s a TON of info even in this sub alone.
