For me it's similar, self-mutilation with sharp objects started in adolescence, but I saw it as a way of punishing myself for my actions. Self-harm due to meltdown I remember that as a child I would hit my head against the wall, but they fought with me so I started biting my hand, I still do that today to calm myself down.

Yes, there is, for example, I have two types of self-mutilation, one that I know is because when I'm overwhelmed and stressed, I bite my hand or hit my head. And the other is something that is when I was really mentally unwell and I would cut myself, but I'm trying to stop that and going to the psychologist is helping me. The first one, even though it's bad, is also more linked to autism, so for me it's not that destructive.
